Baron Pierre de Coubertin was a Frenchman. At his time sports were not taught in French schools. De Coubertin believed that sports should go hand in hand with studies. He had an idea. His idea was to begin the Olympics all over again.

Sports teachers of other countries liked De Coubertin’s ideas. So in 1896, the modern Olympic Games were held in Athens Greece. Since then the Olympics have been held once every four years, except three times, when there were wars.

The modern games have many foot races and field sports programmes. The longest race in the games is called marathon.

Before the start of the Olympic Games, runners carry lighted torch through many nations towards the stadium where the games will be held. These sportsmen are from different countries. Yet they work together to carry the Olympic torch. It is passed from runner to runner. When the last runner enters the stadium, he or she places the torch in a special basin filled with oil. Is there a difference in meaning between “ It’s too late to make a telephone. Mary is asleep now.” and “ It’s too late to telephone. Mary will be asleep now.”?

Yes. The difference is in the reason given for it being too late to telephone. In the first sentence “ Mary is asleep now”, the speaker is stating a fact. In the second sentence “ Mary will be asleep now”, the speaker is saying what Mary usually does. In fact, it’s possible that Mary isn’t asleep, but she is usually asleep at this time. So let’s take two situations. In the first case, imagine Mary’s mother answers the telephone.

You: “ May I speak to Mary, please?”

Mother: “ No. It’s too late. Mary is asleep now.”

You: “ Are you sure? It’s only 10 o’clock.”

Mother: “ Yes. I went to her room and she was asleep.”

The mothers knows that Mary is asleep because she went into her room and saw her. Here is another case. Two friends decide to telephone Mary.

Jack: “ Let’s telephone Mary. It’s 10 o’clock.”

Jill: “ No. It’s too late. She will be asleep now.”

Jill knows that Mary always goes to bed before 10 o’clock, so now she’ll probably be asleep. But it is also possible that she is staying up late.

48. In the first situation, Mary’s mother .

  A. wants to tell you that she knows Mary is asleep

  B. wants to tell you that Mary may be sleeping

  C. has no idea whether Mary is asleep or not.

  D. wants to know if she can take a message for Mary

49. In the second situation, Jill         .

  A. knows that Mary has gone to bed

  B. doesn’t know that Mary is asleep

  C. thinks it’s likely that Mary cannot answer the telephone

  D. is sure that Mary can not answer the telephone

50. According to the teacher, in which situation do you think the word “ will” is used in the same way Jill uses it?

 A. It’s too heavy, I think. I’ll help you.

 B. Don’t get into his office. He will be busy now.

 C. You won’t have to come to my office. I will send it to you.

 D. Will you please do me a favor?

D

Go to church, then have a big lunch, then go out to play while mum does the housework. That was a typical British Sunday in the 1960s. But things now could not be more different.

Some British sociologists recently studied the typical British Sunday. They found that people get up later and do less housework than they did 40 years ago. They are far more likely to be out shopping or enjoying themselves than cooking Sunday lunch.

Sunday mornings were busy 40 years ago. Most women caught up on their weekly housework and cooked a nice lunch. They seldom allowed themselves any “leisure” until afternoon, after the dishes were cleaned. Then there would be another rush to the table between 5:00 pm and 6:00 pm for tea.

But now, Britons can have brunch at the restaurant. Fewer people bother to cook themselves.

“You only have two free days a week. You don’t want to have to waste one because there is nothing to do but watch boring TV,” said Elizabeth Biggs, 25, a producer in London.

“On Saturday you are recovering from the week,” Biggs added. “Sundays are the last chance for the weekend — you want to get as much as you can out of the day before you have to go back to work.”

In the past, British women usually did their shopping during the week, while the husband was at work. “Now men seem to do that as much as women,” said Jonathan Gershuny, a professor who took part in the study.

Men also do more housework now on Sundays. Back in the 1960s, men were far more likely to spend Sundays out of the house — at the pub or playing football — before lunch.

51. Many Britons have brunch at the restaurant because _______.

A. they have no time to cook at home.

B. they get up too late.

C. they won’t bother to cook themselves.

D. they will go to church.

52.Which of the following is NOT true?

A. Britons used to go to church on Sundays.

B. Britons usually had a big lunch at home.

C. British women did their shopping on Sundays in the past.

D. British men did little housework at home in the past.

53. The underlined word “ leisure” in Para 3 means ___________.

A. housework B. shopping      C. lunch     D. free time

54. The text mainly tells us ________.

A. what Britons did on Sundays

B. why Britons go shopping on Sundays

C. how Britons spend their holidays

D. the changes of the ways the Britons spend their Sundays

55. What can we infer (推断) from the passage?

A. Men do more housework on Sundays.

B. Sundays in Britain might be very boring in the past.

C. No people go to church on Sundays now.

D. Britons all go out on Sundays.

In1901,the citizens of Colorado Springs in the USA decided to collect everyday items and to seal(密封) them in a steel box. The box was marked “To be opened after midnight, December 31st, AD2000”, and was stored in the Colorado College library.

Playing computer games is very interesting and can sometimes make us clever. But some people lose their heart in it, which has a bad effect on their study. This is the same case with the ball games, TV and others because they all have disadvantages.

But whose fault is it? We must learn to control ourselves. Self-discipline and self-improvement are what we need on the road leading to success. Besides playing, we have many other important things to do, such as learning new knowledge, helping others, taking exercise and so on.

In a word we must have a good control of our behavior, for our future is in our own hand.
