I was born in New York, but I grew up in San Francisco. I began to live London 25 years ago. If I
am asked now where I want to live forever, I would say London. But I will always be American.
San Francisco, like London, has many parks. Every day my sisters and I were taken to play in the
parks as children. I didn’t go to school. I only had three hours of formal(正规的)education when I
was five. I was sent to school but came home at noon on the first day. I said I didn’t enjoy it and
hadn’t learned anything. My parents decided that school was not for me and I never went back.
My mother then taught me and my two sisters, in the way of an English lady who had good
education. We learned languages and reading more than sciences and maths. Sometimes she taught
us herself, but we also had other teachers. They asked us to take lessons every day. About once a
week we walked to Golden Gate Park. While we were walking, my mother taught me to read
music. One day I noticed a little toy train in the window of a shop and I remember now how I’d
like to have it. I couldn’t say my ‘r’ when I was small. My mother said if I could say an ’r’ well, I
would have the toy train. I practiced and practiced. Then one morning I woke everybody up with
my ‘r’s. I got the toy train. I usually get the things I want in life – but I work hard for them.

Do you know why different animals or pests (昆虫)have their special colours? Colours in them
seem to be used mainly to protect themselves.
Some birds like eating locusts (蝗虫), but birds cannot easily catch them. Why? It is because
locusts change their colours together with the change of the colours of crops. When crops are
green, locusts look green. But as the harvest time comes, locusts change to the same brown colour
as crops have. Some other pests with different colours from plants are easily found and eaten by
others. So they are to hide themselves for lives and appear only at night.
If you study the animal life, you’ll find the main use of colouring is to protect themselves. Bears,
lions and other animals move quietly through forests. They cannot be easily seen by hunters (猎人
). This is because they have the colours much like the trees.
Have you ever noticed an even more strange act? A kind of fish in the sea can send out a kind of
very black liquid (液体)when it faces danger. While the liquid spreads over (散开),its enemies (敌
人)cannot find it. And it immediately swims away. So it has lived up to now though it is not strong
at all.

enemies.

This was one of my favourite games when I was a little girl. My sister and I used to play it for
hours at a time. To play this game we made twenty-six small pieces of cards. On each of these
cards we printed an English letter. And this is how we played it:
First, before we started to play, we decided what the game would be about. For example, we
chose to play flowers.
One of us would then mix up(混合)the cards and turn over the one on top of them. If the letter on
the card happened(碰巧)to be P, we would try to think, as quickly as possible, of a flower which
began with P, such as pansy(紫罗兰)or pink(石竹花).The one who first gave the name of the
flower won that card. This was done with each of the twenty-six cards.
In the end the person who had more cards won the game.
Step 1 65 Step 2 66 Step 3 67 Step 4 68 Step 5 69
70.Which is right?
A. The game can only be played between two people.
B. If you choose to play flowers, the letter on the card will be P.
