Today we can use the Internet for many things: shopping, business, writing letters, talking to people, getting information and so on. In recent years, a new kind of English has grown on the Internet. There's no real word for it yet, so we'll call it e-talk.

People don't like typing too much. To save time, they turn phrases into a few letters (called acronyms). Acronyms are often used in chat rooms. Some of them are:

BRB (be right back) BTW (by the way)

LOL (laughing out loud)       IMO (in my opinion)

People also use many abbreviations. They are shortened forms of words. Some common abbreviations are:

   info (information)         pic (picture)

   puter (computer) sec (second)

We usually don't see people when we communicate(交流) on the Net, so people have new ways to show feelings. Most people use their keyboards to draw "feelings", such as:

   :-) (happy) ;-) (joking) :-( (sad)     :-O (surprised)

These days, many forums (论坛) have picture feelings. For example:

     (happy)       (sad)       (angry) (cool)

There are even whole new words, like "newbies"(someone who is new on a chat board or forum). When you write something bad about someone else, it's called "flaming" the person.

It takes time for people to get used to e-talk. Also, different groups on the Net have their own special ways of communicating. Newbies sometimes have to ask other people what they mean. As the Internet grows, e-talk will continue to grow and change.

( A )56. Why do people type acronyms?

 A. Because people can type them quickly. B. To make jokes.

  C. To show their feelings.      D. In this way newbies won't understand them.

   D. The person is angry at somebody.

Dear Kitty,

I’m happy to know that you like the storybook. And thank you for the red sweater. In Australia, we don’t have Mid-Autumn Festival. But we have Halloween(万圣节前夕) on 31st October every year. It’s an interesting festival.

In the evening, our children dress up as witches(巫婆) ghosts(鬼) and animals. We play a game. It’s “Trick or Treat.” “Treat” means to give us sweets or presents. We’ll go from house to house and say, “Trick or Treat”. If someone does not give sweets or presents, we will play a trick(捉弄) on him later.

Many people put pumpkin lamps(南瓜灯) in front of their houses on Halloween. They make the pumpkins look like faces and put candles(蜡烛) in them. Tell me some more interesting things about China. Write to me soon.

New rules and behavior standards* for middle school students came out in March. Middle school is going to use a new way to decide who the top students are. The best students won’t only have high marks. They will also be kids who don’t dye* their hair, smoke or drink. The following are some of the new rules.

Tell the truth. Have you ever copied someone else’s work on an exam? Don’t do it again! That’s not something an honest* student should do. If you have played computer games for two hours in your room, don’t tell your parents you have done homework.

Do more at school. Good students love animals and care for other people. April is Bird-Loving Month in China. Is your school doing anything to celebrate? You should join! This way, you can learn more about animals and how to protect them. When more people work together, it makes it more fun for everyone.

Have you ever quarreled with your teammates when your basketball team lost? Only working together can make your team stronger. Be friendly to the people you are with. Try to think of others, not only yourself.

Be open to new ideas. Have you ever thought that people could live on the moon? Maybe you’ll discover Earth II someday. Don’t look down on new ideas. Everyone’s ideas are important. You should welcome them, because new ideas make life better for everyone.

Use the Internet carefully. The Internet can be very useful for your studies. But some things on the Internet aren’t for kids, so try to look at Web pages that are good for you. You can use the Web for fun or homework. Can’t you find any good Web sites for children? Her are some: http://kids.eastday.com http://www.chinakids.net.com http://www. cycnet.com.

(A)56. The school new rules will help kids by telling them____.

  A. what is right and what is wrong. B. what they should do at school.

  C. how they can study well D. how they can protect themselves

(B)57. According to the passage, which of the following is NOT true?

  A. Take care of yourself when you are out. B. Keep some animals to protect them.

A.    Tell the truth, even when you are wrong.

B.    D. Use the Internet, but keep away from bad things.

(D)58. The main idea of the fourth paragraph is about ____.

  A. trying to do more for the people around you B. being a good friend to others

  C. learning from each other          D. working together with others

  A. be a waste of time B. do homework for them

  C. makes life easier             D. help them with their studies

(C )60. The passage tells us how to ____.

  A. care for others B. do more at school

  C. be top students D. use the Internet

Can you think out other new rules for your school?
