Among the four skills in learning English, which one of these is the “odd-man-out”? The answer is speaking. The other three you can do alone on your own. But you can’t really speak alone! Speaking to yourself can be “dangerous” because men in white coats may come and take you away!
Where can you find people to speak English? And how can you practise speaking when you are alone?
At school If you pay to go to a language school, you should use the opportunity to speak. If your teacher asks you to speak in pairs or groups with other students, try to say as much as possible. Don’t worry about your mistakes. Just speak!
Conversation Clubs Many cities around the world have conversation clubs where people can exchange one language for another. Look in your local newspaper to find a conversation club near you. They are usually free although some may charge a small entrance fee.
Shopping Even if you don’t want to buy anything, you can ask questions about products that interest you in a shop. “How much does this cost?” “Can I pay by cheque?” Often you can start a real conversation-and it costs you nothing!
Café and Bars There are often American, Britain, Irish and Australian bars in many large cities. If you can find one, you’ll probably meet many people speaking English as a first or second language.
Language is all around you Everywhere you go, you find language. Shop names, street names, advertisements, notices, and car numbers… When you walk down the street, practise reading the words and numbers that you see. Say them to yourself. It’s not exactly a conversation, but it will help you to “think” in English. But don’t speak too loud!
Songs and Video Repeat the words of an English-language song singing with the music until it becomes automatic. It’s good practice for your memory and for the mouth muscles that you need for English.
Above all, speak as much as possible! Make as many mistakes as possible! When you know that you have made a mistake, you know that you have made progress!
60. What does “odd-man-out” probably mean according to the passage?
A. Someone or something appearing different from the others.
B. Someone or something standing out of the group.
C. Someone or something arranged in pairs.
D. Someone or something that can be easily mistaken for another.
61.How many ways does the writer suggest to learn to speak when you are alone?
A. 7 B. 6 C. 5 D.8
62. Why does the writer say “Make as many mistakes as possible”? Because .
A. everyone will make mistakes in learning English
B. everyone will meet people speaking English with some mistakes
C. making mistakes is a must in making progress in learning English
D. making mistakes can make one realize the importance of speaking

I left my friend’s house shortly after seven. It was still too early for me to have my evening meal, so I walked along the seafront for about an hour until I began to feel hungry. By that time I was not far from a favorite restaurant of mine, where I often went to eat two or three times a week. I knew the owner well and frequently complimented(恭维) him on his excellent cooking.
I went into the restaurant, which was already crowded, and ordered my meal. While I was waiting for the soup to arrive, I looked around to see if I knew anyone in the restaurant. It was then that I noticed that a man sitting at a corner table near the door kept glancing in my direction, as if he knew me. I certainly did not know him, for I never forget a face. The man had a newspaper open in front of him, which he was pretending to read, though all the while I could see that he was keeping an eye on me. When the waiter brought my soup, the man was clearly puzzled by the familiar way in which the waiter and I addressed each other. He became even more puzzled as time went on and it grew more and more obvious that I was well known in the restaurant. Eventually he got up and went into the kitchen. After a few minutes he came out again, paid his bill and left without another glance in my direction.
When I had finished and was about to pay my bill, I called the owner of the restaurant over and asked him what the man had wanted. The owner was a little embarrassed by my question and at first did not want to tell me. I insisted. “Well,” he said, “that man was a detective(侦探).” “Really?” I said, considerably surprised. “He followed you here because he thought you were a man he was looking for,” the owner of the restaurant said. “When he came into the kitchen, he showed me a photograph of the wanted man. He certainly looked like you! Of course, since we know you here, I was able to convince(说服) him that he had made a mistake.” “It’s lucky I came to a restaurant where I am known,” I said, “otherwise I might have been taken away!”
63. The man at the corner table kept looking at the writer because ______.
A. he was afraid that her writer might run away.
B. he recognized the writer
C. he thought the writer was the man he was looking for
D. he was tired of reading his newspaper
64. The underlined words “keeping an eye on” means ______.

65. The detective was puzzled by the fact that ______.
A. the writer noticed him
B. the waiter came towards the writer
C. the writer and the waiter addressed each other in a very familiar way

A. felt surprised B. didn’t want to tell him the truth
C. was very angry D. was glad to tell him the truth

Although most people know there are Seven Wonders in the Ancient World, only a few people can name them. This is because most of them are no longer there except the pyramids. However, there is a growing list of wonders of the world today. About nine years ago, UNESCO’s World Cultural and Natural Heritage (things that have come down to us from the past) List had 411 places and 136 countries were responsible to protect them, and the list keeps on growing.
Usually it is the task of a group of 21 experts to decide which places go on the list. The experts are chosen to work for six years. Their work is to examine and discuss the suggestions from different countries. They also manage the World Heritage Fund and have the right to decide what help to give to countries for protection work.
Over the past centuries a lot of cultural or historic places have been destroyed by man or nature. Protecting our natural and cultural heritage is a long and difficult task. Earthquakes, floods, pollution, wars, or even tourism are some of the dangers that harm this heritage.
When a historic place is in great danger, it is put on the World Heritage in Danger List and necessary things will be done to protect it. Places which are on the Danger List include Historic Bridges of Indiana, Elizabeth’s Hospital, Rosenwald School in Southern U. S., etc.

C. the Great Wall D. the pyramids
68. According to the passage, ______ may provide some money for protecting the cultural
relics.

C. the 21 experts D. some countries
69. Why does the World Cultural and Natural Heritage List keep on growing?
A. There are more cultural heritages beginning to appear.
B. More countries begin to build cultural heritages.
C. A lot of cultural or historic places have disappeared.
D. More and more cultural heritages are in great danger.
70. Which of the following statements is true?
A. People can still visit the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World today.
B. Rosenwald School is a newly built school in Southern U.S.
C. More places will be added to the UNESCO list.
D. The list is decided mainly by the governments of different countries.
