第一节:阅读下面短文,从各题A、B、C、D 四个选项中选出最佳答案。

What is a bird?
Any animal that has feathers is a bird. All birds have two wings and two legs. Modern birds have no teeth, but they have a hard mouth part. It helps them catch and eat their food. All she-birds lay eggs, and most birds build their homes. Birds — like people — are “warm-blooded”. Their body temperature stays about the same no matter how hot or cold the air is.
Why do birds have feathers?
Feathers help a bird to keep warm. In cold weather, their feathers act as a blanket by holding in body heat. In warm weather, a bird squeezes (挤) its feathers against its body to let body heat escape.
Feathers also help a bird to fly. While flying, a bird uses its outer wing feathers to move forward in the air. Wing feathers and tail feathers are used to keep balance (平衡).
What do birds eat?
Different kinds of birds eat different kinds of food. Usually birds have favorite foods, but will eat some other things, too. Many birds like worms and insects (虫) best. Birds that live near water often eat fish. Some birds eat meat — snakes, smaller birds, and other animals. Some birds eat fruit. Many small birds live on seeds.

The robber snatched them and turned to leave.
Then, while everyone watched the robber, George calmly lifted the top part of the money-box, took bills from the bottom part and put them into his own pocket secretly.
The door was shut and the bank robber was gone. George fainted (晕倒).
As soon as he was safely behind his bedroom door, George counted the money. He had eight thousand dollars. He was very happy.
The next morning, while the others were examining the bank’s records, George was called into Mr. Burrow’s office and was introduced to Mr. Carruthers, who used to be president of the bank.

You’re driving home from work. You’re tired, and the thought of shopping for food and cooking dinner makes you even more tired. Suddenly you see a brightly lit sign: “Hamburgers! Fries! Shakes! ” Your hands are holding the wheel. Which way are you going to turn?
If you turn toward the hamburgers, you’ll find much of what you’re looking for. You won’t have to do any shopping, and you won’t have to do any cooking. Not only that, but you won’t even have to clean up after you’ve eaten.
Of course, the fast food will be about three times as expensive as food you buy in a store and maybe half as nutritious(有营养的) as food you cook at home. That’s because you’ve got to pay for someone else to buy the food and cook it, and for those unpleasant containers that save on cleanup. Fast food is also less nutritious because the meals are not as balanced(均衡的) as those you can prepare at home. Fat content and calories are high, and the meals don’t have enough fresh fruits and vegetables. Fast-food restaurant owners, who always care about money, also may cut corners on quality of foods.
Worst of all, those hamburgers will be the same old hamburgers as you’ve had a million times before. With home cooking, you can eat anything you want, not just what you can find in fast-food restaurants.
The choice is yours, of course. However, if you want to be healthy, wealthy, and wise, try cooking at home.
53. The fast food will be about three times as expensive as ______.
A. the food in a store
B. fresh fruits and vegetables
C. the food you cook at home
D. the food in other restaurants
54. What does the writer try to tell us?
A. She advises us to eat more fast food.
B. She tells us how to choose fast food.
C. She encourages us to cook dinner at home.
D. She tells us where to have dinner when we are tired.
55. What’s the best title of the passage?
A. You are what you eat!
B. You eat what you need!
C. Fast, delicious and convenient!
D. Cheap, nutritiously-unbalanced and fresh!

The Thing from the Sea
In 1938, a fishing boat off the coast of Africa pulled up its nets. One net held a very strange fish, five feet long and bright blue. Strangest of all, it had fins (鳍) that looked like legs!
In the nets, only this fish remained alive for several hours. Before the creature began to rot, a young woman made a drawing of it. She sent her drawing to an expert on sea life, Professor J. B. Smith.
Upon seeing her drawing of the fish, Professor Smith stared in disbelief. Could it be true? It just didn’t seem possible, but there it was. It could be only one thing, a coelacanth, a fish believed to have died out fifty million years ago. How could the fish have been swimming about only a few days before?
If one had been found, there must be others. The professor put up posters offering a reward for catching such a fish.
Other scientists laughed at Smith. They insisted the search was a waste of time. Years passed. It began to look as if the other scientists were right. But Smith never gave up hope. One day, fourteen years later, the professor received a telegram. A fish had been caught that looked like the one in the poster. Would the scientist fly to the region and inspect the fish? Smith did.
With shaking fingers the professor raised the cloth around the fish. It was exactly like the one in the young woman’s drawing. It was a coelacanth, a missing link with the past!
After the discovery of the coelacanth, scientists began to wonder. Is it possible that an even stranger creature will someday be discovered?
