The market is a concept. If you are growing tomatoes in your backyard for sale you are producing for the market. You might sell some to your neighbor and some to the local manager of the supermarket. But in either case, you are producing for the market. Your efforts are being directed by the market. If people stop buying tomatoes, you will stop producing them.

When you spend your income, you are buying things from the market. You may spend money in stores, supermarkets, gas station and restaurants. Still you are buying from the market. When the local grocer hires you to drive the delivery truck, he is buying your labor in the labor market.

How often one hears children wishing they were grown-ups, and, old people wishing they were young again. Each age has its pleasures and its pains, and the happiest person is the one who enjoys what each age gives him without wasting his time in useless regrets.

Childhood is a time when there are few responsibilities to make life difficult. If a child has good parents, he is fed, looked after and loved, whatever he may do. It is impossible that he will ever again in his life be given so much without having to do anything in return. What’s more, life is always giving new things to the child——things that have lost their interest for older people because they are too well known. But a child has his pains: he is not so free to do what he wishes to do; he is repeatedly being told not to do something, or being punished for what he has wrongly done.

When a young man starts to earn his own living, he can no longer expect others to pay for his food, his clothes, and his room, but has to work if he wants to live comfortably. If he spends most of his time playing about in the way that he used to as a child, he will go hungry. And if he breaks the laws of society as he used to break the laws of his parents, he may go to prison. If, however, he works hard, keeps out of trouble and has good health, he can have the great happiness of building up for himself his own position in society.

61.According to Paragraph 2, the writer thinks that      .

D.one is the happiest if he can make good use of each age in his life

    A.examples of successful young men

B.how to build up one’s position in society

C.joys and pains of old people

D.what to do when one has problems in life

In the United States today, a large group of people want a college education. However, everyone is not able to attend a four-year college. Many four-year colleges are already too crowed. To give more people a chance to get a college education, some cities and towns have built junior colleges.

The junior college offers a two-year courses of study in a wide range(范围)of subjects. It prepares some young people to go on to a four-year college. It trains others for jobs in business, government, or industry.

Because junior colleges are built in cities, they can serve many people who live in a large community. Many students can not afford to go to a four-year college. But they can save enough to go to a junior college. The entrance fee at a junior college is low. Students can also save money by living at home.

A junior college admits some high school graduates who would not be accepted at other schools. The four-year college turns down students whose high school grades are low. The junior college will often admit a student who might do well in taking a two-year course.

Americans usually make allowance for(宽容)non-native speakers who have some trouble understanding English. But they become annoyed when a person pretends to understand but doesn’t really and then creates problems because of misunderstanding what is said. No one wants soap when he asks for soup. So if you don’t understand what is said to you, admit it and politely ask the person to repeat or explain.

Second, it is quite rude to talk with a friend in your native language and leave your American friends standing there feeling stupid because they can’t understand the conversation. The Americans may also feel that you are talking about them or saying something you don’t want them to hear. If you must switch to your native language to explain something to a non-English-speaking friend, at least translate for your American friends so they don’t feel left out.

Learn just a few more polite English expressions, and you’ll be ready to face the world of Americans with confidence. The polite response(反应)to a compliment(赞扬)about your looks or your work is “Thank you.” (A smile and a nod is not enough.) The response to “Thank you.” is, of course, “You’re welcome.” If someone asks, “How are you?” don’t give your medical history. Just say, “Fine, thanks. How are you?” Finally, what should you say when someone sneezes(打喷嚏)? It may not seem logical, but the correct response is “God bless you.” That’s about all there is to it. Now that you’ve learned this general knowledge of manners in the U. S. A. , you’re ready to be polite in English, Let’s hope your American friends will be just as polite.

67.Which of the following does the writer not refer to?

A.Don’t let any of your friends feel left out in the course of conversation.

B.Ask for repetition once you fail to follow American natives.

C.Never serve your guest soap if he actually asks for soup.

D.Politely thank the person for his kindness when you’re praised by him.

    C.quite unfriendly D.fairly pleased

Hank Viscardi was 26 years old when he put on his first pair of long trousers and his first pair of shoes. For the first time he saw himself as he had always wanted to be-a full five feet eight inches tall.

Hank had been born without legs. Until he was seven, his world was a world of repeated operations. At last he had not legs, but stumps(残肢)that could be fitted with a kind of special boots.

Out of the hospital, Hank often found people staring at him with cruel interest. Children laughed at him and called him “Ape Man” because his arms dragged(拖)on the ground.

He went to school like other boys. His grades were good and he needed only eight years instead of the usual twelve.

Out-of-class Activities in Our School

Students in our school have two periods for out-of-class activities every day except on Saturday and Sunday. They are between 3:20 and 5:20 p. m.

During that time we do reading, have sports and singing, or learn to use computers. We also attend interest groups of various subjects. Our favorite activities are sports matches, singing contests and speech contests. We enjoy our out-of-class activities.

We hope that we’ll be given less homework to do and more time to spare. We suggest that more tour trips be organized so that we can learn what is going on outside our school.

回答第6—8题。

I was waiting for the doctor to finish his examination. I was worried and nervous. Would he have to operate? What would he have to say? Dr. Johnson was an excellent doctor and his examinations were always complete. He listened to the patient's heart, took his blood pressure and temperature, gave him an X-ray and examined his eyes and ears. The doctor finally completed his examination and spoke to me. He told me that this wasn't a serious heart attack. He advised losing some weight, getting plenty of sleep and eating good meals. Smoking and drinking would be harmful, of course. Dr. Johnson said it would be necessary to be careful for a while, but he was confident that there was nothing to worry about. I felt much better after I spoke to Dr. Johnson. I was certain that my uncle would be up and around again very soon. He's seventy years old now, but he can still live for a long time if he takes good care of himself.

    A quarter past eight.

Do you take the subway or the bus?

I usually catch the 8:30 bus.

Can you join me for dinner? I can pick you up after work.

But I have to meet my sister Jane at the airport in the afternoon.

    When is the arrival time?

    It's scheduled 6:30.

Then I'll pick you up first at about 5:35 and then drive you to the airport to meet your sister at about 6:20.

You're so nice, Larry. Thank you very much. I'll be down at the front gate after work. I may be five minutes late. Is that OK?

No problem. Let's go to a Chinese restaurant this time for a change.

    That's great.

Ohio know, Dad. . .but I feel so tired. There's so much housework.

But you've got a washing machine, a tumble-dryer, a vacuum cleaner and a dishwasher. I used to do everything by hand.

I'm sorry, dear. . .I'll come to help you.

It's a good time to have a picnic. Shall we have one this weekend?

I'd love to, but I think it's going to rain. The weatherman says it is.

    I don't think he's right. It hasn't rained for a week.

But he is usually right in his weather news.

I'm sure we'll have fine weather for our picnic.

Well, I'll take my umbrella with me.

Jim, I'm sorry to have kept you waiting so long.

Oh, I didn't mind. I've only been here ten minutes. You said you might be half an hour late, so I just bought my newspaper and ordered myself a cup of coffee.

    That sounds wonderful.

When's the show supposed to start?

    Don't worry. It doesn't start until 9:30. We've still got 20 minutes.

Where's the tobacco you promised to bring me? Didn't you go shopping this morning?

I planned to, but the car was out of order so I did some sewing instead.
