第三部分:阅读理解(共20小题;每小题1.5分,满分30分)

I had been a step-mother for six years, and with my husband, I had watched his young children growing into tee. h they lived mostly with their mother, they spent a lot of time with us. Over the years, we all learned to become more cobl other., Iee .

When the children moved to a town five hours away, my husband was understandably destroyed. In order to keep in touch with the kids, we set up an e-mail and chat-line service.

Ironically(具有讽刺意义的是), this technology can make us feel out of touch and more in need of real human contact. If a computer message came addressed to "Dad," I'd feel forgotten. If my name appeared along with his, it would brighten my day. Yet always there was some distance to be crossed, not just over the telephone wires.

Late one evening, as my husband was snoozing(打盹), I was catching up on my e-mail, an "instant message" appeared on the screen. It was Margo, my oldest stepdaughter, also up late in front of her computer. We sent several messages back and forth, exchanging the latest news. When "chatted" like that, she wouldn't necessarily know if it was me or her dad unless she asked. That night she didn't ask and I didn't tell her it was me either. After hearing the latest volleyball scores and the details about a coming dance at her school, I said that it was late and I should go to sleep. Her return message read, "Okay, talk to you later! Love you!"

At this, a wave of sadness ran through me and I realized that she must have thought she was writing to her father the whole time. She and I would never have openly exchanged such words of love. Feeling guilty(内疚的)for not telling her the truth, yet not wanting to embarrass(使人尴尬)her, I simply replied, "Love you, too! Have a good sleep!"

I thought again of their family circle and I felt again the sharp ache of emptiness and "otherness." Then, just as my fingers reached for the keys to return the screen to black, Margo's final message appeared. It read, "Tell Dad good night for me, too." With tear-filled eyes, I turned the machine off.

Besides this question of the time given to pronunciation, there are two other requirements for the teacher: the first, knowledge; the second, technique.

It is important that the teacher should be in possession of the necessary information. This can generally be got from books. It is possible to get from books some idea of the speech, and of what we call general phonetic rules. In this way it is also possible to get a clear mental picture of the relationship between the sounds of different languages, between the speech habits of English people and those, say, of your students. Unless the teacher has such a picture, any explanations he makes on his students’ pronunciation are unlikely to be of much use, and lesson time spent on pronunciation may well be wasted.

But it does not follow that you can teach pronunciation successfully as soon as you have read the necessary books. It depends, after that, what use you make of your knowledge; and this is a matter of technique.

Now the first and most important part of a language teacher’s technique is his own performance, his ability to show off the spoken language, in every detail of sound as well as in fluent speech, so that the student’s ability for imitation is given the fullest space and encouragement. The teacher, then, should be as perfect a model in this field as he can make himself. And to make his own performance better, however satisfactory this may be, the modern teacher has in his hand recordings and a radio, to supply the real voices of native speakers. If the teacher happens to be a native speaker himself, or speaks just like one, he needs to change the method of presenting the language material.

However, the process of showing pronunciation, whether by personal example or with the help of machines, is only the beginning of teaching pronunciation. The technique of teaching each sound also needs to be considered.

69. How might the teacher find himself wasting lesson time? ___________.

A.    By spending lesson time on pronunciation.

B.    By making ill—informed explanations of pronunciation.

C.    By not using books on phonetics in the classroom.

D. By not giving students a clear mental picture of the difference between sounds.

70. Students have an ability for imitation which is ________.

 A. plain and obvious       B. well developed

 C. not yet developed       D. too weak to be useful

71. What is the main point the author makes about imitation of the teacher?

A.    It is a matter of secondary importance.

B.    Students should be given every chance for it.

C.    It depends on the student’s ability.

D. Teachers are perfect models for students to imitate.

72. To someone teaching his own language to foreigners, mechanical aids(技术手段) can

 ___________.

A.    improve his own performance

B.    replace his own performance completely

C.    provide examples of native speech

D. make his voice louder

73.Showing pronunciation is to be regarded as __________.

A.    a part of teaching pronunciation

B.    an exercise of value in itself

C.    an example of the use of mechanical aids

D. a technique for teaching separate sounds

C

Have you ever wondered why birds sing? Maybe you thought that they were just happy. After all, you probably sing or whistle when you are happy.

Some scientists believe that birds do sing some of the time just because they are happy. However they sing most of the time for a very different reason. Their singing is actually a warning to other birds to stay out of their territory.

Do you know what a ‘territory’ is? A territory is an area that an animal, usually the male, claims (声称) as its own. Only he and his family are welcome there. No other families of the same species are welcome. Your yard and house are your territory where only your family and friends are welcome. If a stranger should enter your territory and threaten you, you might shout. Probably this would be enough to frighten him away.

If so, you have actually scared the stranger away without having to fight him. A bird does the same thing. But he expects an outsider almost any time, especially at nesting(筑巢)season. So he is screaming all the time, whether he can see an outsider or not. This screaming is what we call a bird’s song, and it is usually enough to keep an outsider away.

Birds sing loudest in the spring when they are trying to attract a mate and warn others not to enter the territory of theirs.

You can see that birds have a language of their own. Most of it has to do with attracting mates and setting up territories.

74. What is a bird’s ‘territory’?

A. A place where families of other species are not accepted.

B. A place where a bird may shout at the top of its voice.

C. An area for which birds fight against each other.

D. An area which a bird considers to be its own.

75. Why do birds keep on singing at nesting season?

A. Because they want to invite more friends.

B. Because their singing helps frighten outsiders away.

C. Because they want to find outsiders around.

D. Because their singing helps get rid of their fears.

76. How does the writer explain bird’s singing?

A. By comparing birds with human beings. B. By reporting experiment results.

C. By describing birds’ daily life. D. By telling a bird’s story.

D

Are you worried by the rising crime rate? If you are, you probably know that your house, possessions(财产) and person are increasingly in danger of suffering from great rise in the cases of burglary(夜盗;抢劫) and attack.

Figures show an ever-increasing crime rate, but it is only too easy to imagine "It will never happen to me". Unfortunately, statistics show that it really can happen to you and, if you live in a large city, you run twice the risk of being a victim.

Fortunately, there is something definite which you can do. Protect Alarms can help to protect your house with a burglar alarm system which is effective, simple to operate and easily affordable.

You must remember that owning a burglar alarm is no indication(暗示) that your house is packed with valuable possessions. It quite simply indicates to unwelcome visitors that yours is one house they will not break into easily, so they carry on to an unprotected house where their job is made a lot easier.

Send now for our free leaflet telling you how we can Protect Alarm your house quickly, easily and cheaply. Complete and tear off the slip below and post it to us. Postage is free. Also, telephone us on 327 6721 where we have a round-the-clock answering service. It costs nothing to find out about Protect Alarm.

A new plan for getting children to and from school is being started by a local government in Eastern England. This could end many parents’ worries fearful for their children’s safety on the roads.

Until now the local government have only been prepared to provide bus services for children living more than three miles from their school, or sometimes less if special reasons existed. Now it has been decided that if a group of parents ask for help in organizing transport they will be prepared to go ahead, as long as the arrangement will not lose money and children taking part will attend their nearest school.

The new plan is to be fired out this term for children living at Milton who attend Impington School. The children live just within the three-mile limit and the local government said in the past that they would not undertake to provide free transport to the school . But now they have agreed to offer a sum of money for a bus service from Milton to Impington and back, a plan which has the support of the school’s headmaster. Between 50 and 60% parents have said they would like their children to take part . Final calculations have still to be carried out, but a government official has said the cost to parents should be less than £20 a term. They have been able to arrange the service at a low cost because there is already an agreement with the bus company for a bus to take children who live further away to Impington . The same bus would now just make one more journey to pick up the Milton children. The official said they would get in touch with other groups of parents who in had asked if transport could be provided for their children to see if they would like to take part in the new plan.

82.What is the aim of the plan?

A. To prevent the students’ road accidents    B. To relieve the traffic pressure

C. To save time for the parents and students D. To help the parents save money

83. How can the local government arrange the new bus service at a low cost?

A. By letting the bus run in the morning only.  B. By limiting the number of the students

C. By getting the support from the headmaster D. By linking the new bus service with the existing one

84. Which of the following is possible if the plan is carried out?

A. The bus company will make much more money

B. The children can choose whatever school they like

C.The parents can get rid of their worries

D. The students in Impington School can have free bus rides

85. This passage is most probably _____

A. a personal letter.

B. an advertisement

C. headmaster’s report.

D. a newspaper article

One possible version:

In order to support Beijing to hold the 2008 Olympic Games and protect our environment, an activity was organized by the Young League and Student's Union of our school during the week from September 3rd to 8th.
All the students in the senior grades took an active part in it. Some students cleaned the playground, watered the young trees and flowers, and removed weeds. Some students collected waste paper, old books, empty cans, old toys and waste batteries. If not dealt with properly, waste batteries will seriously pollute the environment. They had them sorted and sent them to the recycling center.
The activity is really instructive. Now we all have realized how important protecting the environment is.
