About a year ago, I went to stay at a Detroit hotel. I didn’t want to carry too much money with me, so I asked the desk clerk to put a hundred- dollar bill in the safe for me.

The next morning, however, the clerk said he knew nothing about my money. I didn’t have any proof that I had given the man the money. There was nothing I could do but go to the nearest lawyer.

The lawyer advised me to return to the hotel with him and give another hundred-dollar bill to the clerk. This I did. An hour later, I went back to the desk and asked for my money. Since I had the lawyer as an eyewitness to the second hundred-dollar bill, the clerk could not say he knew nothing about it.

If you don’t hand it over immediately, I’ll be forced to call the police.”

Many teenagers feel that the most important people in their lives are their friends. They believe that their family members don’t know them as well as their friends do. In large families, it is quite often for brothers and sisters to fight with each other and then they go to their friends for some ideas.

It is very important for teenagers to have one good friend or a group of friends. Even when they are not with their friends, they usually spend a lot of time talking among themselves on the phone. This communication (交际) is very important in children’s growing up, because friends can talk about something, and these things are difficult to say to their family members.

However, parents often try to choose friends for their children. Some parents may even stop their children from meeting their good friends. Have you ever thought of the following questions?

If you go into the forest with friends, stay with them. If you don't, you may get lost. If you get lost, this is what you should do. Sit down and stay where you are. Don't try to find your friends — let them find you. You can help them find you by staying in one place. There is another way to help your friends or other people to find you. You can shout or whistle(吹口哨) three times. Stop. Then shout or whistle three times again. Any signal(信号) given three times is a call for help.

Keep on shouting or whistling. Always three times altogether. When people hear you, they will know that you are not just making a noise for fun. They will let you know that they have heard your signal. They will give you two shouts or two whistles. When a signal is given twice, it is an answer to a call for help.

If you don't think that you will get help before night comes, try to make a little house with branches(树枝). Make yourself a bed with leaves and grass.

When you need some water, you have to leave your little branch house to look for it. Don't just walk away. Pick off small branches and drop them as you walk in order to go back again easily. When you are lost, the most important thing to do is to stay in one place.

67. If you get lost in the forest, you should______.

  A. try to find your friends B. stay in one place and give signals

  C. walk around the forest D. shout as loudly as possible

68. Which signal is a call for help?

  C. someone needs help        D. something terrible will happen

The program Growing Pains was shown on TV in America from 1985 to 1982. It told more than 160 different stories about a family of six. They lived on Long Island near New York.

Mike, the eldest child of the family was the main cause of the program’s success. He always made troubles but he was interesting. In the end he helped and cared about a homeless child, which made his parents very proud of him.

Another cause to make the program so popular was that most of the stories were about ordinary families.

Children’s education is changing very rapidly today. In the past, teachers made children sit still for hours. They made them memorize all sorts of things. In other words, the children had to go on repeating things until they knew them by heart. Today, many teachers wonder if it is possible to make children learn at all. They say you must let children learn and discover things by themselves.

But for some children, school is a kind of prison. They are there only because their parents make them go.They get out of the classroom as soon as the teacher lets them leave. Many of them want to find jobs but the law will not allow them to work until they reach a certain age.And so,they have to stay in school.Often they do not learn anything at all and hate every moment.
