Out of water, out of food, many people in New Orleans, US were in big trouble, crouching(蜷缩) on roof of houses, waiting for rescue. Floodwaters were beating the walls a few meters below.
In early September, New Orleans was badly hit by Hurricane Katrina. The whole city was left in ruins. Thousands of citizens lost their lives. Death figures are the biggest in the earth in the US since the San Francisco earthquake in 1993.
People feel very sad about the natural disaster. But we should also consider about the role human beings have played in changing our natural environment.
Scientists point out that the flooding from Hurricane Katrina may have been caused by human activity. They believe the greenhouse effect has caused icebergs at both poles of the earth to melt, resulting in seal level rise. As most of the land in New Orleans lies below sea level, it is possible that sea level rise could have had an effect.
Along the seafront(海岸线), forests have been cut down to make space for hotels and restaurants. By losing this shield(盾牌), the city seemed too weak to fight against Hurricane Katrina.
We have all learnt that nature is like a balanced net, where humans are just a very small part, together with animals, plants, air and more. When we destroy some parts, the balance is broken and disasters arrive. Perhaps this is why more natural disasters are happening.
Americans produces the most greenhouse gas of all the countries. But it refused to sign the “Kyoto Protocol”, which aims to limit its waste gas. Perhaps Hurricane Katrina will act as an alarm to the US Government. It should also remind us that we should try our best to protect the earth before we regret it.

Walking through any high school in the first class in the morning, you may find many students are struggling to stay awake.
“They are sitting in the classroom, but their heads are at home on their pillows”, says Mary Carskadon of Brown Medical School in the US.
Don’t blame them; blame the clock in their brains. Research suggests that biological clocks push teens to stay up at night and sleep in the morning. Many suffer from jet lag (时差)between their internal clocks and the external world.
During the first several weeks of school, students are more likely to get a lack of sleep. In the holidays, students can sleep eight hours a night. But during the school day, students on average sleeps only about six hours. Students lose 10 hours of sleep per week they never recover from. The lack of sleep may not only be a drag on school performance, but may be related to poor health.
Scientists in the US led research to try to help them fall asleep earlier. They found the brain can produce a chemical that helps sleep. It comes out only in the dark. So they use a special light in the classroom to try to force a reset of the students’ biological clock.
The research failed at the end. So some schools in the US have reset their school time from 7:25 to 8:30 am to suit the students. The results were promising. The hour extension help students perform better in class.

Glynis Davis:
I first piled on the pounds when I was in the family way and I couldn’t lose them afterwards. Then I joined a slimming(减肥)club. My target was 140 pounds and I lost 30 pounds in six months. I felt great and people kept saying how good I looked. But Christmas came and I started to slip back into my old eating habits. I told myself I’d lose the weight at slimming classes in the new year…but it didn’t happen. Instead of losing the pounds, I put them on. I’d lost willpower and tried to believe that the old bag of fish and chips didn’t make any difference-but the scales don’t tell lies.
Roz Juma:
To be honest, I never weigh myself any more. I’ve learned to be happy with my self. It seemed to me that I would feel sorry about every spoonful of tasty food that passed my lips. My idea is simple. You shouldn’t be too much thinking about food and dieting. Instead, you should get on with life and stop dreaming of a super-thin body. This is obviously(明显地)the size I’m meant to be and, most of all, I’m happy with it.
Lesey Codwin:
I was very happy at winning Young Slimmer of the year. I’d look in the mirror unable to believe this slim lady was me! That might have bee my problem-perhaps from then on I didn’t pay attention to myself. Winning a national competition makes everything worse, though, because you feel the eyes of the world are fixed upon you. I feel a complete failure because I’ve put on weight again.
Ros Langfod:
Before moving in with my husband Gavin, I’d always been about 110 pounds, but the pleasant housework went straight to my waist and I put on 15 pounds in a year. Every so often I try to go on a diet…I’m really good on a few days, then end up having the children’s leftovers(残羹剩菜) or eating happily chocolate- my weakness. I’d like to be slim(苗条的, but right now my duty is the children and home. I might take more exercise when my kids are older.

One possible version:
Recently I have learnt that a sixty-year-old teacher ate up the remaining food in the dustbin left by one of his students. His students were deeply moved by his action. So do I.
In my opinion, as students we ought to save everything as much as we can. For example we ought to turn off the lights in the room when it is bright, and anyone who leaves the classroom last ought to turn off the lights. Besides, we had better value every drop of water, every piece of paper, every grain of rice and every fen.
In a word, we should try our best to save all kinds of resources in the world. We should set good examples to others, and make contributions to building an economizing society.
