Dear Betty,
My roommate’s family wants me to celebrate Thanksgiving Day with them in their home. I accepted the invitation, and I’m excited about going, but I’m a little nervous about it, too. The social customs in my country are different from those here, so I’m a little worried about making mistakes.
Should I bring a gift, such as candy or flowers? Should I arrive on time or a little late? At the dinner table, how can I know which fork or knife to use? How can I let the family know that I’m thankful for their kindness?
Yours,
Knowing Nothing
Dear Knowing Nothing,
It’s a good idea to bring a gift when you go to a dinner party. Flowers are always welcome, or you can bring a bottle of wine if you know the family drink it.
You should arrive on time or five to ten minutes late. Don’t get there early. If you are going to be more than fifteen minutes late, you should call and tell them.
Try to relax at the dinner table. If you don’t know how to use the right fork, knife or spoon, just watch the other guests, and follow them. If you still have no idea of what to do, don’t be shy about asking the person next to you; it’s better to ask them than to be silently uncomfortable and nervous.
If you like the food, say so. Of course, you’ll thank the host and hostess for the meal and for their kindness. It’s also a good idea to send a card to thank them the day after.
Yours,
Betty

When you take a walk in any city, you often see a lot of people walking dogs. It is still true that a dog is the most useful and faithful animal in the world, but the reason why people keep a dog has changed. In the old days people used to train dogs to protect themselves against attacks by other beasts. Later they came to realize that a dog was not only useful for protection but willing to obey his master. For example, when people used dogs for hunting, the dogs would not eat what was caught without permission.
These days people in the city need not protect themselves against attacks from animals. Why do they keep dogs, then? Some people keep dogs to protect themselves from robbery. But the most important reason is for companionship. For a child, a dog is a best friend when there are no friends to play with. For young couples, a dog is also their child when their natural children have grown up. So the main reason why people keep dogs has changed from protection to friendship.

Any mistake made in the printing of a stamp raises its value to stamp collectors. A mistake on a two-penny stamp has made it worth a million and a half times its face value.
Do you think it impossible? Well, it is true. And this is how it happened. The mistake was made more than a hundred years ago in the former British colony Mauritius, a small island in the Indian ocean. In 1847, an order for stamps was sent to London. Mauritius was about to become the fourth country in the world to put out stamps.
Before the order was filled and the stamps arrived from England, a big dance was planned by the commander-in-chief of all the armed forces on the island. The dance would be held in his house and letters of invitation would be sent to all the important people in Mauritius. Stamps were badly needed to post the letters. Therefore, an islander who was a good printer, was told to copy the pattern of the stamps. He carelessly put the words “Post Office” instead of “Post Paid”, two words were seen on the stamps at that time, on the several hundred stamps that he printed.
Today, there are only twenty-six of these misprinted stamps left-fourteen One-penny Reds and twelve Two-penny Blues. Because there are so few Two-penny Blues and because of their age, collectors have paid as much as 16,800dollars for one of them.

A. will be thrown away B. increases in value

Lillian Hanson, a college student, expects to graduate in about two years. What makes Mrs. Hanson different from her classmates is her age—73 years. She has been studying at college, a few courses at a time, for 27 years.
When Lillian Hanson graduated from high school, she went to the bank to borrow money for further education. The banker gave her no encouragement. He didn’t think that a country girl should borrow money to go to college. He thought she should be at home doing work in the house or around the farm. So Lillian Hanson went home and raised a family of nine children instead of going to college.
Mrs. Hanson never forgot her dream of getting a higher education. When her children grew up, she tried again.
She finds it is the hardest part of going back to school at her age to be sitting in class for long periods of time, because she is not as quick as she used to be. Mrs. Hanson often gets up and walks around between classes to keep from getting stiff(僵硬). At the beginning of a course in using the computer, the other students all stood up to give her a warm welcome when she introduced herself and explained why she was there and what her aims were.

阅读下文, 然后按照要求写一篇120-150词左右的英文短文。
There are basically two ways of traveling: traveling in a group led by a tour guide and traveling independently. By traveling in a group, you will enjoy the companionship(同伴之谊), comfort and safety of group travel, and learn more information about the place from a tour guide. So most people choose to travel in a group led by tour guide. Some people, however, prefer to travel independently. They believe they can enjoy more freedom than those in a group. And they can also experience and explore new things by themselves.
But sometimes independent travel can be very troublesome. There are some trivial( 烦琐的) things that may bother you. For example, you must be responsible(负责任的) for your own transportation(交通) from your home to the places of interest. This includes making all connecting arrangements(安排) between your different transportation. You must also be responsible for your own accommodation(住宿)and safety.
1. 概括短文的内容要点, 该部分的词数大约30
2. 就“ 自助旅游好还是组团有导游带队好”这个主题发表你个人的看法,要求包括下列内容要点, 该部分的词数大约90-120:

基础写作
Dear Daniel,
Hi! How are you? I’m glad to tell you something about Chinese festivals.
The Spring Festival is the most important festival for Chinese people, just like Christmas in the West. It falls on the first day of the first month in the Chinese lunar calendar. Another important festival is the Dragon Bout Festival, which has a history of more than 2,000years. Zongzi is the popular food of this festival. The Mid-Autumn Festival falls on the 15th day of the 8th lunar month. In the evening, all family members gather outside, putting moon cakes on tables; they enjoy a bright full moon while talking about life.
There are some other important Chinese festivals. If you want to know more, please click www.chinese .chaedu.com.

读写任务
The passage tells us two major ways of traveling: traveling in a group led by a tour and traveling independently .Both of them have their own advantages and disadvantages.
Most people choose to travel in a group, which I think is the best way, because the advantages are obvious.
Firstly, you will enjoy the companionship when traveling in a group. Usually a tour group consists of around 20 to 40 people. There people travel together, eat together and stay in the same hotel. You will make some new friends during the trip.
Secondly, you will enjoy the comfort and safety from a group travel. Everything is pre-arranged by the travel agency. You do not have to worry about booking tickets, finding hotels, deciding where to visit, etc.
Thirdly, you can learn more about the places of interest from a tour guide, and won’t miss any important spot. Traveling in a group can save your time and money on information searching.
In a word, traveling in a group is the best choice for me.
