Why, you may wonder, should spiders be our friends? Because they 36 so many insects, and insects include some of the greatest 37 of the human race. Insects would make it 38 for us to live in the world; they would devour(吞噬) all our 39 and kill our cattle, if it were not for the protection we get from insect-eating animals. We owe a lot to the birds and beasts who eats insects, but all of them together 40 only a very small amount of the number destroyed by spiders. Moreover, 41 some of the insect eaters, spiders never do the least harm to us. No doubt they are our friends.
Spiders are not 42 as many people think, nor 43 nearly related to them. One can tell the difference almost at a glance for a spider always has eight legs and 44 never more than six.
How many spiders are engaged in the work on our behalf? One expert on spiders did 45 of the spiders and found that there were more than 2,250,000 in one acre(英亩), that is something like 6,000,000 spiders of different kinds on a football field. Spiders are busy for at least half the year in killing in sects. It is impossible to make more than wild guess at how 46 they kill, but they are 47 creatures, not content with only three 48 a day. It has been estimated that the 49 of all insects destroyed by the spiders in Britain in one year would be greater than the 50 weight of all human beings in the country.
