Earthquakes are something that people fear. There are some places that have few or no earthquakes. Most places in the world , however , have them regularly (有规律的) . Countries that have a lot of earthquakes are usually quite mountainous.
The most talked about earthquake is the United States was in San Francisco in 1906. Over 700 people died in it. The strongest one in North America was in 1964. It happened in Alaska.
Strong earthquakes are not always the ones that kill the most people. In 1755 , one of the strongest earthquakes ever recorded was felt in Portugal. Around 2,000 people died.
In 1923 , a very strong earthquake hit the Tokyo, Yokohama area of Japan. A hundred and forty thousand people died. Most of them died in fires which followed the earthquake.
One of the worst earthquakes ever was in China in 1976. It killed a large number of people. The worst earthquake ever reported was also in China , in which 400,000 people were killed or injured. This earthquake happened in 1556.

Hotlines
Hotlines have become common in China. Some radio broadcasting stations use hotlines to encourage the listeners to take part in the talk shows.
That’s a good idea. Yet, the fact is, some people do nothing but break the whole programme.
Some people know little about the topic under discussion. Sometimes they do not even know what the host is talking about. So the host has to tell the caller what the show is about. Usually the caller will ask a few questions which express his hope and show his ignorance(无知). Then the host has to answer and explain—how silly this is! It wastes a lot of time.
It seems that some people phone the hotlines for fun. They just want to let the listeners hear them. They don’t care what the topic is, no matter whether they themselves are interested in it or how silly they appear to be.
I’m totally bored by those people. It’s necessary for radio stations to improve the hotline programmes. In my opinion, if a caller doesn’t know what is going on, the operator should not let the caller take part in it.

Together we followed the sheep back to where she had been feeding on the farm. She rushed forward and kept on looking back to see if we were coming. She finally led us to an old well, and we heard the sad voice of her young baby that had fallen into the well. As the well had no water in it and was only six feet deep, we fetched a ladder and in a few minutes the baby went back to its mother. She seemed delighted at the successful outcome of the accident.
