On December 26, 2003, the worst earthquake in more than a decade(ten years) hit Bam, a historical city in Iran. At least 25,000 people died in the quake——nearly a third of the city's population. And thousands more were left homeless, hungry and sad.
Bam was a city of mud-brick houses, old monuments and an ancient castle(古代城堡). But nearly everything was destroyed in the disaster. One reason the earthquake caused such damage(损坏) was that Dam's buildings were made mostly from baked mud(泥). These buildings fell down in piles of dust and sand.

Bam used to be famous as a trading post on the Silk Road. In the 16th and 17th centuries, treasures from the Far East were carried along the road into the capital cities of Europe. Fifty years ago, teams, of .architects(building designers) began restoring(rebuilding) the historic treasures of the city. Ever since, thousands of visitors have come to admire them.

The Tangshan Earthquake measured 8.2 on the Richter Scale(里氏震级). Although it was the most destructive(破坏的) of the last century, the most terrible in history probably occurred(appeared) in Shanxi Province in 1556. Historians estimate that as many as 830,000 people were killed in it. A smaller quake on the scale may in fact cause more damage(破坏)to people and buildings than a quake with a higher scale rating. For example the Tangshan quake, resulted in far more loss of life and property(财产)than the quake that hit Chile in May, 1960. That quake, however, Registered(recorded) 9.5 on the Richter Scale, the highest magnitude(等级) ever recorded.
