The British are the most voracious (求知欲强烈的) newspaper readers in the world. They read newspapers at 51 ; they walk to the bus reading a newspaper; they read a newspaper on the 52  as they go to work; and on the way back home, after work, they read an evening 53 .

There are many daily newspapers in 54  . All the nine national daily newspapers are 55  in London, and all appear every 56  except on Sundays. Most sell more than a million 57  a day and cost about three pence each.. 58  the daily newspapers, there are a number of Sunday newspapers, many of which are 59  with the “dailies”. The Sunday papers are larger than the daily papers and are usually read for their 60  and other special long articles rather than their news reports.

Of all the “morning papers”, the most 61  is The Times, which is not a government newspaper. The various newspapers usually have their own views on politics, 62  they are not organs (机构) of the political parties, 63 the Communist Morning Star. It is free for a newspaper to say exactly what it 64  about anybody or anything, though, of course, 65  newspapers are responsible for what they publish.

However, it is true of some British papers, especially the Sunday papers, that in order to 66 more readers they have become vulgar (庸俗的). The main headlines have nothing to do with 67  news at all. And there are a few, especially The Times, the Guardian and the Observer, which are of the greatest importance in both guiding and expressing the free 68  of very important people.

Nearly all papers pay special attention to the 69  of sports and games. The evening newspapers are often bought because the reader wants to know the winner of a race, or to get a good trip for a 70  that is still to be run.

When friends come to visit us in the evening, they spend their time telling us they are in a hurry and looking at their watches. It isn’t that our friends are all very busy; it is just that we haven’t got a television. People think that we are very strange. “But what do you do in the evening?” they are always asking. The answer is very simple. Both my wife and I have hobbies. We certainly don’t spend our evenings staring at the walls. My wife enjoys cooking and painting and often attends evening classes in foreign languages. This is particularly useful as we often go abroad for our holidays. I collect stamps and I’m always busy with my collection. Both of us enjoy listening to the music and playing chess together.

Sometimes there are power cuts and we have no electricity in the house. This does not worry us ; we just light candles and carry on with what we were doing before. Our friends, however, are lost---no television! ---So they don’t know what to do. On such evenings our house is very full; they all come to us. They all have a good time. Instead of sitting in silence in front of the television, everybody talks and plays games.

Dear David:

I am upset now because of the problems between my parents and me, and I need your advice badly.

My parents say that I can only surf the internet for an hour every week, but I usually do it for an hour every day, because I think I can get much information while on it to improve myself. But they think it a waste of time and sometimes not useful.

I also think it’s enough to finish what teachers tell us to do but they tell me to learn by myself for an hour every day so that I can keep up with others. I want an MP3 or a cell phone about me at school but they say it’s no good and that I won’t put my heart into my lessons any longer. It’s quite a problem for me to understand that. Why do they not understand me? Is that called growing pains? And what should I do now?

Yours

Jack
