Today almost everyone knows computers and the Internet. If I ask you “What is the most important in your life?” maybe you will say “Computers and the Internet.”

The first computer was made in 1946. It was very big but it worked slowly. Today computers are getting smaller and smaller. But they work faster and faster. What can computers do? A writer has said, “People can’t live without computers today.”

The Internet came a little later than computers. It is about twenty-five years later than computers. But now it can be found almost everywhere. We can use it to read books, write letters, do shopping, play games or make friends.

Many students like the Internet very much. They often go into the Internet as soon as they are free. They make friends on the Internet and maybe they have never seen these friends. They don’t know their real names, ages, and even sex (性别). They are so interested in making the “unreal friends” that they can’t put their hearts into study. Many of them can’t catch up with others on many subjects because of that.

We can use computers and the Internet to learn more about the world. But at the same time, we should remember that not all the things can be done by computers and the Internet.

Today some people are using a kind of telephone called the picture phone or vision phone. With it, two people who are talking can see each other.

Picture phones can be useful when you have something to show the person you’re calling. They may have other uses in the future. One day you may be able to ring up a library and ask to see a book. Then you’ll be able to read the book right over your picture phone. Or you may be able to go shopping through your picture phone. If you see something in the newspaper that you think you want to buy, you’ll go to your phone and call the shop. People at the shop will show you the thing you’re interested in right over the phone. M: Hello, I’ d like to spend the weekend on the seaside. Can you make arrangements for me?

W: Yes, certainly. Just tell me your name and room number.

Text 5

M: I’ll take these three books. Are they fifty cents each?

W: These two books are, but this one is 75 cents.

Text 6

M: Hello, Mary! Is that a letter you’ re putting in the postbox?

W: Yes. To my boyfriend.

M: But there’s no name and address on it!

W: I know.

M: Why are you posting a letter to him with no name and address on it?

W: Because I don’t want him to read it.

M: Why not?

W: We quarreled yesterday.

M: Yes?

W: And I’ m writing to tell him that I never want to see him again.

M: Yes?

W: Well, it’s not true. That’s why I don’t want him to read it.

M: How long have you lived in California?

W: Since last June…about a year.

M: Was it cold last winter?

W: Yes, it was, but not as cold as Paris. December and February were much colder than January.

M: Did you have much snow?

W: Yes. But we didn’t have as much snow as you had in Paris.

M: What about the other seasons?

W: I think autumn was the most beautiful season. The days were clear and dry, and it was sunny all the time. But November was terrible. We had a lot of rain.

M: What was last spring like?

W: It wasn’t very nice. But May was nicer than March and April.

M: What was summer like?

W: It was wonderful.

M: Jane, I hear that you are leaving school now. What do you want to do? Have you made up your mind yet?

W: No, not yet. But I think I’ m going to take up singing.

M: Any special reasons?

W: Yes. It’s because I am good at singing songs. All my classmates say so. Besides, singing is quite interesting and you meet a lot of the audience.

M: And you will have to please them too.

W: Well, you do it in any job, don’t you?

M: And what do your parents think about it?

W: They don’t quite agree with my idea. That’s the only trouble.

M: Yes, um… my parents are trying to send me to an art college because they want me to bean actor.

W: Then what will you do?

M: Well… I haven’t decided yet. But I usually get my own way in the end.

Text 9

W: What have you got here?

M: Requests for advertising space from the different departments.

W: There must be a couple of dozen of them.

M: Yes, every department in the store must be having a sale this week.

W: How much space do we have?

M: We’ve only got enough to meet half of these requests.

W: Then we’ re going to have to make some decisions.

M: Yes, we certainly are. I suppose we should go through all these requests.

W: Well, this one on top is from the children’s department, but their sale doesn’t begin until next week.

M: You can put it aside then. What’s the next one?

W: From furniture, and their sale starts tomorrow. They’ve got some really good bargains, too.

M: What about women’s clothes?

W: There are half a dozen of them—women’s dresses, young women’s sportswear, coats, shoes…

M: These departments all bring in a lot of business, you know.

W: Then let’s advertise them tomorrow. A full page for the women’s department and a half page for furniture.
