Jack used to curse (诅咒) the front yard as if it were a living thing. He was the man who lived with my grandmother for thirty years. He was not my grandfather, but an Italian who came down the road one day selling fruit in Florida.

Jack stopped at my grandmother’s house to sell her some oranges just a stone’s throw from downtown Miami. And he was delivering her whiskey a week later. He stayed for thirty years.

Jack hated the front yard because he thought it was against him. There had been a beautiful lawn there when Jack came along, but he lit it wander off into nothing. He refused to water it or take care of it in any way.

Now the grown was so hard that it gave his car flat tires in the summer. The yard was always finding a mail to put in one of his tires or the car was always sinking out of sight in the winter when the rains came on.

It is curious that, while swimming comes natural to most animals, men have to learn to swim. Such animals as dogs, horses, deer, and cattle can swim when they first go into the water; but a man will sink unless he has learned the art. And, when we consider how necessary it may be most people at some time in their lives to know how to swim, it is still more curious that comparatively few people take the trouble to learn the art. It is even said that many sailors and fishermen, who are in daily risk of drowning, are not swimmers.

Most landsmen who are not swimmers have rather a dread of water, which perhaps discourages them from learning to swim. Indeed there is a story of a man who said he would never go into the water until he had learned to swim. But those who have learned swimming in their childhood get so used to being in deep water that they have no fear of it at all. So all boys, and girls too, should be taught swimming; for it is an art much more easily learned in childhood than in later life.

59. What is true about swimming according to the text?

A. It is not natural to man to know how to swim.

B. Dogs can’t swim if they’re not taught to.

B. they want to preserve their own life

C. they have more or less a fear of water

61. Swimming is an art best learned    .

A. in deep water B. in childhood C. when necessary D. after one grows up

April 27 is Take Our Daughters to Work Day in Britain. Started at first in the United states and brought to Britain to Britain in 1994, Take Our Daughters to Work Day has become a special day for girls between 11 and 15. One that day thousands of girls take a day off school and go together with one of their parents to their word places. The purpose of this day is to broaden girls’ horizons (视野) and raise their self-confidence.

For many years people have thought that boys can do better than girls in society, “girls can be whatever they want to be just like boys, whether it is a pilot, a nurse or a chief executive (主管),” says the chairman of the Our Sons and Daughters Charitable Trust, an organization which supported the activity of the Day. “Now the girls have a close look at what their parents are doing and this may help them to be more self-confident when they are faced with a choice of world.”

Schools and many companies support the activity too. Palmers Green High School for girls, in north London, has made the day a necessary part of education.

Zarina Bart, 15, from Palmers Green, went with her mother Gwen to her Lawyer’s office this year’s Take Our Daughters to Work Day. “I learned how to fill in a legal aid (援助) form and I read details of a case, Then I went to see the actual trial,” she said.

Zarina found it interesting to see her mother at work... “It’s really strange seeing Mum at work-running around, getting serious and telling people what to do.” She has always liked this idea of going into law and thinks it likely that she will follow in her mother’s footsteps Having a chance to see how her mother works has given her more self-confidence.

Experts believe that girls with higher self-confidence aim higher and are more likely to be successful in life. Parents have most important effect on the confidence of teenage girls. If parents believe in their daughters and show examples both at word as well as at home for them, this will give a lot of help to girls. Take Our Daughters to Work Day is surely a step in the right direction.

Time and time again, one may be warned, “Your name will be mud.” Many have used the expression in the mistaken belief that it has something to do with the kind of dirt found in the streets or on unclean river bottoms. But the expression comes from the name of Doctor Samuel Alexander Mudd, a physician who fixed the broken leg of John Wilkes Booth, the man who killed President Abraham Lincoln. Doctor Mudd treated Booth’s injured leg without knowing who he was.

A small group helped Booth to plan Lincoln’s murder. They were all caught and sentenced to death or prison terms.

Doctor Mudd had nothing to do with Lincoln’s murder or with any of the men who had planned. All seemed to show that he was an innocent (清白) man. But he had given some kind of help only to leave Booth to escape. This in itself was a crime (犯罪) then. And so, Doctor Mudd was sentenced to prison for life.

In prison, Doctor saved many prisoners and guards in a yellow fever outbreak. President Andrew Johnson pardoned him in 1869, after the doctor had spent almost four years in prison.

The American people considered the murder of Lincoln a heavy blow to them. It filled them with bitterness that lasted many years. They hated Booth very, very much and they also hated anybody who had helped the murderer in any way. Doctor Mudd was freed, but people never forgave him and his name passed into American folk speech as something bad hateful. The Mudd family had also suffered a lot because of the name until not long ago.

“Anyone who has lost a little girl, please come to the broadcast room…”The aunt in the room said that again and again.

Minutes later a worried woman came in a hurry. The girl ran to her mother happily. The mother was very thankful and asked me for my name. I answered with a smile, “I’m a League member.” (108 words)

 (Text 6)

M: Would you like to go to the movie with me tonight, Mary?

 W: I’d like to , but I can’t. I have to study.

M: Come on! Don’t be silly. Tomorrow is the weekend and we don’t have classes.

W: But I’ll have an exam next week.

 M: Exam? Next week? Oh-oh!

 W: What’s the matter, Tom?

M: I just remember. I have an exam, too.

M: You don’t look very happy. What seems to be the problems?

W: I’ve got to write an English composition for my tomorrow’s class. But I don’t have any idea now.

M: That shouldn’t be too hard. Remember the photos you showed me last week?

W: Yes. I took them at my father’s farm last summer.

M: Why didn’t you write about your life on the farm? It will be very interesting.

W: That’s a good idea. And I can also tell about the animals on the farm. You know, my father raises 2 cows, 4 horses and 50 chickens.

M: Well, you can begin your composition now. And I’ve got to finish mine.

 W: Thanks for your help.

(Text 10)

Which animal is the cleverest in the world? Maybe you’d like to know the answer. A teacher

in a famous school wanted to find out the result, too. So he recently made several experiments with different animals. At last he reached his answer --- the monkey was more intelligent than other animals.

In one experiment, the teacher put a monkey in a room. At eh same time, he put a few small boxes in the room. Some boxes were inside others. One small box had some food inside it, which the monkey likes best. The teacher wanted to watch the monkey and find out how long it would take the monkey to find the food. The teacher closed the door and left the room. He waited a few minutes outside the door. Then he came close to the door and put his eye to the keyhole. He thought the hungry monkey would be searching for food. What did he see? The money opened the boxes one by one. When it almost got the smallest box which had food in, it looked around. Then to the teacher’s surprise, the monkey didn’t open the last box. It walked gently to the door and looked through the other side of the keyhole!
