In the spring of 1929, Yan Qingbao, then a 43-year-old farmer, discovered a circular piece of jade(玉) while digging a hole. Driven by curiosity, he dug deeper and found a group of about 400 colorful jade pieces.

At the time, he had no idea his discovery would be as important as other wonders of the world such as, China's Great Wall and Egypt's pyramids.

Since then, more than 10,000 relics, dating back to between 5,000 and 3,000 BC have been unearthed at Sanxingdui(三星堆).These relics include gold, pottery(陶器), bone tools and ivory objects(象牙制品). They prove that Sanxingdui contains the ruins of an ancient city that was once the political, economic and cultural center of the ancient Shu Kingdom — the old name for Sichuan.

It has helped modern historians realize that Sichuan's human history goes back more than 5,000 years. And, located on the upper part of the Yangtze River, the site challenges the common idea that Chinese civilization(文明) rose from a single source — the Yellow River valley.

Although emailing is very convenient (方便的),there are a number of problems to be aware(意识到的) of. For example, many business people receive more than 100 emails every day. Because they must also make telephone calls, attend meetings, write reports and so on, they may not be able to spend much time reading and replying to emails.

It is necessary to keep your emails short and to the point.

Make sure that you have a suitable heading in the subject line so that the reader will want to read your message. Many emails are deleted unread because of the lack of time.

Make sure that you have given all the time and place of a meeting.

Do answer emails immediately and exactly. If you can not give the information requested, then reply with “Thanks for your message. I’ll get back to you asap.” Then make sure that you do!

Check your message carefully before sending.

Use the subject line to indicate(指出)what the message is about and then do not reply yourself in the text. Because emails already have the person’s name in the heading, it is not necessary to start your message with “Dear…”. Although the language in emails is often quite informal, writing in sentences and correct use of grammar and punctuation(标点), including capital(大写的) letters, is important. For example, “the meeting in Harbin on Monday 11th December” does not give a good impression (印象).

1. What do we get mainly from the text after reading?

 A. Useful information about emails.

B. Ways of replying to emails.

C. Examples of writing emails.

 D. Suggestions for writing emails.

2. The underlined word “asap” means_______.

 A. later B. early C. clearly D. quickly

3. When writing an email, you should do the following except .

A. keeping it short and informative.

B. writing the subject.

C. starting with “Dear…”

D. trying not to write sentences which are wrong in writing or grammar

4. The last example in the text doesn’t give a good impression because .

A. it is quite informal and careless in writing.

B. Readers cannot understand it at all

C. It pays no attention to punctuation and capital letters.

D. It gives readers wrong use on grammar and spelling

Many children act in TV shows. They work several hours every day, so they cannot go to a regular school. How do they get an education?

In Hollywood, where many TV shows are made, about forty teachers give lessons to the children in the shows. They teach wherever their pupils are working.

The teacher’s job is very important. She is responsible(负责) for making sure that the children work only the permitted hours each week. She is also responsible for making sure that the children learn the required subjects. She makes sure, too, that the children get enough rest and play, along with their education.

Child actors are required to attend classes twenty hours each week. California law says that they must be taught from September to the middle of June. If they do not get good marks in school, they are not permitted to continue working in TV shows.

TV children are usually good pupils, and most of their teachers like this special kind of work. Their classes are held in many interesting places. Sometimes the ‘classroom’ is a Mississippi riverboat. Sometimes it is the inside of a spaceship. Often the pupils become famous stars.

 1. TV children have classes _______.

 A. at a regular school. B. wherever they are working.

 C. wherever teacher likes. D. at the school in Hollywood.

2. What else does the teacher do besides teaching?

A. Making sure that the children don’t overwork.

B. Acting in some important shows.

C. Making sure that the children have enough rest and play.

D. Both A and C.

3. How many hours TV children attend classes each week?

 A. Thirty. B. Forty. C. Twenty. D. Ten.

4. If they fail in the required subjects, TV children _____.

A. are allowed to study for another year. B. must go to a good school.

C. must be taught from September to the middle of June.

D. are not allowed to work in TV shows any longer.

5. What is this talk mainly about?

A. The education of TV children. B. Child actors in TV.

C. How good pupils become TV children. D.A special kind of school in TV

Being seventeen has many problems that only another seventeen-year-old would understand. The biggest, I think, is learning to get along well with adults. I have found that when dealing with grown-ups, it is wise to remember two things.

  1. Always use your head.

  2. Never use your head.

For example, one day just before supper, my mother sent me to the store for a loaf of whole-wheat bread. They didn’t have any. When I told my mother, she said, “Well, what kind did you get?” I told her I didn’t get any. She looked as if I had just announced that I was leaving home for good. “For goodness’ sake,” she said, “if they didn’t have whole-wheat, you should have got something else! Why don’t you use your head?”

Not long after that, she sent me to the store for some white, oilcloth. They didn’t have any, so I bought seven yards of purple. I thought it was pretty. Mother didn’t. She said,“ Who ever heard of purple oilcloth in a red kitchen?” I told her I was only trying to use my head. She said,“ Well, don’t! And in the future, if you can’t get what I send you for, don’t get anything.”

 See what I mean?

There are other things that seem a little strange, too. If my father goes out for the evening, he tells me to “ look after” my mother and sister. But, if the family goes out, and I want to stay home, my father won’t let me. He doesn’t feel comfortable if I am at home alone. That means I am old enough to “look after” my mother and sister but not old enough to “ look after” myself!

Another problem is what to do when you trip over the cat and land with your head in the refrigerator, causing a large lump to appear just over the right eyebrow. In this case, your father could feel free to explode with a few rude words. Your sister could cry to her heart’s contend(尽情地). Your mother could, and probably would, do both. What about you? You are seventeen and can’t do anything! You are too young to curse, and “ big boys” don’ cry. So you just stand there looking more stupid than usual. But in spite of all this, I still think seventeen is a wonderful ages.!

1. The author says that the biggest problem for a seventeen-year-old is_____.

 A. learning how to use his head. B. learning how to get along with grown-ups

C. assuming responsibilities D. showing that he can be trusted

2. The author is usually not allowed to _____.

 A. got shopping by himself B. look after the family

 C. stay at home alone D. use his head

3. What the author actually complains is that there is nothing a seventeen-year-old boy could do____.

 A. when he gets slightly hurt by chance B. when he trips over the cat

 C. when he is in the kitchen D. when he wants to prevent his sister from crying

4. The main idea of the passage is that_____.

 A. young children are good-for-nothing.

 B. being seventeen has too many responsibilities.

 C. a seventeen-year-old boy is the sun of the family.

D. seventeen-year-olds have special problems

5. The main idea is supported chiefly by_____.

 A. experience of the author’s friends

 B. imaginary (想象的) experiences of a typical seventeen-year-old

 C. the author’ own experiences

 D. wonderful experiences characteristic(特征) of a seventeen-year-old

Attention, please! I’m going to give you a summary of today’s discussion about farewell to Internet bar.

Most students think it costs a lot of money and it is a waste of time to surf the Internet in the bar. They have found many students get online only to play computer games. There are even one or two students who are often absent from school for days to spend time on the Internet.

On the other hand, a few students think we can go online at home in our spare time because we can get the newest information both home and aboard through the Internet. And it is a most convenient way for us to communicate with each other. In a word, the Internet makes our lives outside class colorful.
