Electronic mail (E-mail) works very much like postal mail. You receive mail at your own "address", and you send mail to others at their addresses. All E-mail addresses have the same parts. Encouraged by electronic mail's surprisingly high speed, convenience and economy(节约), more and more people are using E-mail as a common means of communication.
Electric networks are the route to friends in other places and faraway countries. People can exchange ideas, share information, bulletin boards(布告栏) and electronic magazines. Anyone with a personal computer, a modem and the software to link computers over the telephone lines can sign on. About live million scientists have done so and they are communicating through Internet, or net.
E-mail is starting to edge out the fax, the telephone, overnight mails, and of course, land mail. It shortens time and distance between scientific partners. It certainly makes communication efficient(有效率的).
E-mail is becoming very popular today. Scientists are using it, and everybody is using it. The New Yorker has celebrated its liberating appearance with a cartoon---a dog seated at a keyboard(键盘), saying happily, “On the internet, nobody knows you're a dog.”

Tens of thousands of Japanese have taken up copies of a waterproof English book. This kind of book turns time in the bathtub into study hall.
The book “Remembering English Vocabulary in the Bath” looks like another of hundreds of English books for beginners. But its waterproof paper, made of plastics(塑料), puts it among the best-sellers in the bookstores. 100,000 copies-at $7.50 each—have been sold since last year.
The key to success was a market research(调研), which showed around 15% of English-language students said the bathtub was their favourite place to study. Since millions of Japanese need to learn English for college exam or to get ahead at work, that 15% was sure to be a big market.
According to the book's publisher, the special paper costs six times as much as normal paper. He said the publishing house kept the price of the book low “with a view toward the future”.
That future includes just-published waterproof books on Japanese history and English composition. Some satisfied readers of the vocabulary book have even asked the publishing house to put out a waterproof English-language tape to go with the book.

Most Europeans want small cars. Many Americans prefer large cars. As a result, European automakers produce a wide variety of economical, light weight cars while American automakers build bigger, heavier cars.
The price of gasoline has much to do with this. Gasoline is expensive in Europe, so Europeans naturally prefer cars that will go a long way on a small amount of fuel. Other reasons also enter into the big or little car decision. Many Old World cities have very narrow, winding streets. In these cities a small car is more practical and easier to handle than a large one.
Some Americans like powerful engines in their cars. They enjoy having roomy cars that are comfortable for large families and long trips. They are prepared to pay higher costs to get these advantages. Other Americans, however, have learned to like the small, nimble(敏捷的)cars. Many visitors to Europe during and after World War I discovered that small cars were fun to drive and easy to park in small spaces. They were delighted to learn how far small cars could go on a few gallons of gasoline.
In the 1950s many Americans began buying European cars. In 1957,for the first time, the United States imported more cars than it exported. The best seller among these imported cars was an cool-looking but small car from Germany. Americans immediately gave it another name “the bug(小虫子)”.
Today, American car buyers have a wide choice. There are big cars for people who want large room, comfort, and power. And there are small cars, mostly imported but some American-made, for people who want easy parking and economical operation.
62.We can conclude from this passage that ____________.
A.no one wants to drive a powerful car
B.all Americans buy European cars
C.small cars are not expensive to run
D.Americans don’t like roomy cars
63.This article mainly tells about ___________.
A.parking cars in America B.the price of gasoline
C.the price of roomy cars D.big cars and small cars
64.Which statements does the article lead you to believe?
A.Americans like many of the European cars.
B.The best-selling car came from America.
C.Small cars must be cool-looking for Americans.
D.Americans never enjoy having European cars.
65.Which statements seems true according to this passage?
A.Americans should travel in Europe.
B.People just like to buy European cars.
C.People like to choose cars from many makers.
D.No one drives in Old World cities.

Dear Yang Mei,
Thank you very much for the film tickets for Harry Potter. I went to the film with my classmate Bill and I like the film so much. I think the most interesting part is Hogwarts because it is a school where students learn about magic. Harry learned not only magic there, but also about real life, friendship and how to be brave. Daniel Radcliff played Harry Potter in the film and I think he is a good actor. Bill does not like the film. He feels it missed a lot of details of the story and is not as good as the novel.
Thanks again and I wish you all the best.
