Tristan da Cunha, a 38-square-mile island, is the farthest inhabited island in the world, according to the Guinness Book of Records. It is 1,510 miles southwest of its nearest neighbor, St.Helena, and 1,950 miles west of Africa. Discovered by the Portuguese admiral(葡萄牙海军上将)of the same name in 1506, and settled in 1810, the island belongs to Great Britain and has a population of a few hundred.

Coming in a close second---and often wrongly mentioned as the most distant land---is Easter Island, which lies 1,260 miles east of its nearest neighbor, Pitcairn Island, and 2,300 miles west of South America.

The mountainous 64-square-mile island was settled around the 5th century, supposedly by people who were lost at sea. They had no connection with the outside world for more than a thousand years, giving them plenty of time to build more than 1,000 huge stone figures, called moai, for which the island is most famous.

On Easter Sunday, 1722, however, settlers from Holland moved in and gave the island its name. Today, 2,000 people live on the Chilean territory (智利领土). They share one street, a small airport, and a few hours of television per day.

The fact that blind people can see things using other parts of their bodies apart from their eyes may help us to understand our feelings about color. If they can sense color differences, then perhaps we, too, are affected(影响) by color without knowing it. Salesman have discovered by experience over a long period of time that sugar sells badly in green wrappings, that blue foods are considered not agreeable to the taste ,and that cosmetics(化妆品)should never be packed in brown. These discoveries have grown into a whole subject of color psychology(心理学).

Some of our preferences(偏爱) are clearly psychological. Dark blue is the color of the night sky and therefore connected with calm, while yellow is a day color connected with energy and encouragement. Experiments have shown that colors, partly because they are connected with psychology, also have a direct effect on people’s mind. People in bright red surroundings(环境) show an increase in breathing speed, heartbeat and blood pressure. Red is exciting. Pure blue has exactly the opposite effect; it is a calming color. Being exciting, red was chosen as the signal for danger, but a closer study shows that a bright yellow can produce a more basic state of alarm, so fire engines in some advanced areas are now rushing around in bright yellow colors that stop buses, trucks and cars.

64. The passage tells us that salesmen have ___.

 A. found out that colors affect sales

 B. discovered the relationship between color and psychology

 C. tried colors on blind people

 D. developed a special subject of color psychology

65. It can be inferred from the passage that ____.

 A. foods sell well in green or blue wrappings

 B. blind people cannot see color differences

 C. what color we prefer depends on our state of mind

 D. a bright color was exactly the opposite effect to red

66. If people are exposed to(置身于)pure blue, _____.

   C. they want to taste blue foods D. they will feel like buying things

   A. red B. bright yellow C. dark blue D. green

68. Which of the following do you think is the best title of the passage?

   A. Color and Feelings            B. Colors and Sales

  C. The Blind and Colors           D. Preferences for Colors

Good Wishes, But Not Good Results

Tom is a kind–hearted boy. One day he was walking along the road when he saw a well uncovered. He thought it was very dangerous to passers–by, so he decided to cover the well. The cover was so heavy that he took great trouble to remove it. At last he managed to cover the well.

When he turned back and was about to leave, he heard someone knocking at the cover. So he had to turn back and moved the cover away. To his surprise, a worker came out with a tool in his hand. He was repairing something inside.

M: How often should I take these pills and how many at a time, please?

W: Take two pills every four hours.

M: Thanks.

(Text 2)

M: Do you want to go to town with me if it doesn’t rain tomorrow?

W: No, I don’t think so. It will be too hot outside.

(Text 3)

M: What would you like, beer or wine?

W: I wonder whether you have tea.

M: Sure. I’ll get you some tea.

W: Thanks.

(Text 4)

M: I hope I can see you at my birthday party.

W: Oh, dear, I’d almost forgotten. When is it?

M: Well, the day after April Fools’ Day. Easy to remember, isn’t it?

W: Yes, of course.

(Text 5)

M: I had my bike repaired, last night I put it at the gate, but I can’t find it now.

M: Darling, I’ve decided to become a vegetarian. From tomorrow on, I will stop eating meat.

W: Why?

M: Because people nowadays eat too much meat and it’s healthier to eat less.

W: Is this another one of your crazy ideas? It won’t last a week. Last month, in order to lose weight, you decided to jog to work every morning. That only lasted a week because you were late for work every day.

M: That’s not the reason why I stopped! I stopped jogging because I pulled a muscle in my leg.

W: Well, what about the bicycle?

M: What bicycle?

W: Exactly! You can hardly remember you own a bike as it’s been locked away in the garage ever since you bought it.

M: That’s not completely true. As soon as the weather improves, I’m going to start using it again.

W: Well, I can’t take my bird with us. Could you look after her for me while we’ re away? M: With pleasure.

W: Are you sure you don’t mind?

M: Yes, of course I’m sure. I’d love to look after her. Glad to help! What do I have to do? W: I’ve written everything down on this list.

M: Good, don’t worry. I’ll take good care of her.

W: I’m sure you will.

(Text 8)

W: How many holidays do you have in the U. S?

M: Er, I’m not quite sure. I just know some.

W: For example?

M: Mmm, Mother’s Day, National Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas, New Year’s Day, and Valentine’s Day.

W: Not bad. When does its National Day come? And the Valentine’s Day?

M: The National Day comes on July 4th and the latter on February 14.

W: Talking of the National Day, who is the Father of the state? Benjamin Franklin or George Washington?

M: George Washington of course.

W: Besides Washington, who else is regarded as a great President?

M: Abraham Lincoln, I’m one hundred per cent sure.

(Text 9)

M: Excuse me, may I ask you some questions?

W: Go ahead, please.

M: I hear that you are going to put on a new play soon. I’d like to know about what you do in the play. Could you explain exactly what you do?

W: OK. It’s a comedy. The director asked me to play the part of a young lady. We are very busy practising.

M: When will the play be put on?

W: We plan to put it on next week.

M: How do you enjoy your work?

W: Very much, but we have to practise a lot. We practise the movements, and try, to remember the lines.

M: What do you plan to do after this play?

W: I intend to take part in a film. And I’ll try to work as a director.

M: I wish you a lot of success.

W: Thank you very much.

(Text 10)

There are two main reasons why the temperature of the air is always changing. One reason is that the air around you moves in from somewhere else. Air usually moves in large bodies called air masses. Some air masses move in from the north. These air masses usually have cold air that causes the temperature to drop. Air masses also move in from the south. They usually have warmer air that causes the temperature to rise.

Temperature changes during the day or night can be great or small. This depends partly on how many clouds are in the sky. When there are many clouds during the night, they act like the covers on your bed. They blanket the earth and keep the air from losing much of its heat. The temperature usually does not drop much during such a night. When there many clouds during the day, some of the sun’s energy will not reach the earth. The temperature usually does not rise much on such a day.
