If you dig down deep enough into the earth, you will find rock. Over the top of most of this rock there is a layer(层)of soil like sugar on a cake. You may call it earth or dirt, but the real name is soil.
The top layer of this soil is not very deep, but it is one of the most important things in the world. To grow well, plants need good topsoil. First, topsoil is made of little pieces of rock. Wind and sun, ice and water and plants have slowly broken big rocks up into little pieces. Then, these little pieces of rock have become mixed with many other bits of things: crumbled(粉碎的)pieces of dead plants and dried leaves, even dead insects and other dead animals. So the topsoil is bits of rock mixed with humus(腐殖土壤)that used to be living things.
In some places, earthworms(蚯蚓)are helpful in making good soil. As they go through the earth getting their food, they make little tunnels(坑道)that air and water come through. And they turn the soil over in such a way that rock pieces are slowly pushed to the top. Besides, earthworms break the soil into very small pieces as they eat.
If you put some soil in a glass of water, the rock, which is heavier, falls to the bottom of the glass. The humus, which is made of lighter things, floats(漂浮)on top.

B. The humus goes down to the bottom.
C. The rock pieces float on the top.
D. The rock bits and the humus become mixed.

No one has ever played the ancient game of chess(国际象棋)as well as a Russian Chess Grand Master(特级大师).

In the 6th game he beat the computer easily.
The world chess winner has played against computers several times. It is becoming more difficult to win a chess game against a computer, he says. That means it will not be long before people can no longer beat a computer. The winner says he’s glad that he will not be known as the first chess winner to lose a 6-game match to a computer. One difference from the other cities is that London has two centers: the City of London, the center of business, and Westminster, the center of the official offices. The City of London is in fact a small area and only about 5,000 people live there but it is the centre of British business. The City of Westminster not only has the Houses of Parliament(议院)but also the different official offices which control the country.
Other famous areas are the West End and the East End. The West End is the part that visitors usually see because it has many famous shops, such as Selfridges and Simpsons, and many museums such as the National Art Building and the Museum of Mankind. Most of the big London theatres and cinemas are also in the West End. The East End has always been poor and not interesting but the home of the true Londoner, the“Cockney”. People say that a Cockney has to be born within the sound of Bow Bells: this means that he could hear the sound of the bells in a church(教堂)in Bow, a place of the East End. The East End used to have the docks(船坞)and some factories but now the docks and many of the factoris have moved out of London.
London is now a mixture of peoples who came from many countries but are now just Londoners. Many people came from the old British colonies(殖民地). But there are also large groups of people from Poland, from Italy, from France, and from many other countries. Now you can buy food from any country and hear any language spoken in London. The only difficulty is finding a restaurant where you can eat English food.

B. there are many Londoners who were not English before
C. after long years of mixing with other peoples, Londoners of real Englishmen and Englishwomen have changed their ways of life. So their food has changed
D. the English food is too expensive to eat

Football is, I believe, the most popular game in England: one has only to go to one of the important matches to see this. Rich and poor, young and old, one can see them all there, shouting for their teams. One of the most surprising things about football in England is the great knowledge of the game which even the smallest boy seems to have. He can tell you the names of the players in most of the important teams. He has pictures of them and knows the results of large numbers of matches. He will tell you who he thinks will win such a match, and his opinion is usually as good as that of men three or four times of his age.
Most schools in England take football seriously(认真地)— much more seriously than nearly all European schools, where lessons are all that are important and games are left for the children themselves. In England it is believed that education(教育)is not only a matter of filling a boy’s mind with facts in the classroom; education also means the training of character by means of games, especially team games, where the boy or girl has to learn to work with others for his or her team instead of working for himself or herself alone. Therefore the school plans games and matches for its students. Football is a good team game. It is good both for the body and the mind. That is why it is every school’s game in England.
71. We can use instead of the underlined word“therefore”.
A. however B. as a result C. why D. at that place
72.In England, boy’s opinion of a match is often .
A. three or four times better than that of a man
B. worse that that of man
C. as good as that of a man
D. worth thinking three or four times
73.In England, education means .
A. filling a boy’s mind with stories
B. more than the teaching of knowledge
C. the teaching of knowledge only
D. training character by means of football games
74.Football games are very popular in England among .
A. all people B. grown-ups C. boys only D. boys and girls
75.From the passage, we learn that .
A. schools in England make use of football games for the training of character
B. England is better than all the European countries
C. football is more important than lessons
D. only some schools in England have football games

I was walking down the street the other day when I suddenly saw a small brown wallet lying on the ground. I picked it up and opened to see if I could find the owner’s name. There was nothing inside except some money and an old photo of a woman and a young girl about twelve years old. The girl looked like the woman’s daughter. I put the photo back and took the wallet to the police station. There I gave it to the policeman. Before I left, the policeman took down my name and address so that the owner could write and thank me if they found it.
That evening I went for dinner with my aunt and uncle. They also asked a young woman, so there were four people at table. Her face was familiar. I was quite sure that we had met before, but I could not remember where I had seen her. During the talk, the young woman said that she had lost her wallet that afternoon. All at once I knew where I had seen her. She was much surprised, of course, when I was able to describe to her what her wallet was like.
My uncle said that we should go to the police station at once to get the wallet. As that policeman handed it over, he said it was most unusual that I had found both the wallet and the person who had lost it.

Every student needs a place to study. Some students like to study in a quiet place such as the library. Most school libraries have large study tables with many chairs. Other students like to study in their own rooms. In their rooms, the students have a desk, large or small, and perhaps a study lamp for good lighting. All students need comfortable chairs because they spent many hours sitting.
Students have different ideas about the best place for studying. Some students like one kind of lighting, one kind of table or desk, things. Some students listen to music or study in groups. Other students need to be alone in a quiet room. In other words, there is not one best place for studying.
