“Now for the run home, I wonder if we can do it.” wrote Captain Scott at the south Pole. The “run home” was a travel of 900 miles during which five men of great courage lost their lives. Sharp winds blew against them across a desert of snow and ice and they could walk only a few miles each day. A month later, Events died after a serious accident. Soon, another member of the party, Captain Gates, could go no farther. One morning he said, “I am just going outside and it maybe some time.” He disappeared into the snow and never returned. Three men now struggled on until they were only eleven miles from their base camp where there was plenty of food. But a terrible snowstorm began and they had to stay in their tent for days. Many people think that we can learn a lot about the culture(文化) of a foreign country simply by living in that country. However, this is not necessarily true. Often, the longer we stay in a foreign country, the more we realize how little we actually know about the culture of that country.

Books and talks about other people’s culture can even be dangerous because they pay great attention to cultural differences and national characteristics, and sometimes a lot of the information they have is untrue.

In a study recently carried out in Britain, people were asked to make a list of anything that they thought was typical(典型的) of Britain and would interest a foreign visitor there. Most talked about Shakespeare, the Queen, village inn, English folk dancing and chips wrapped(包,裹) in newspaper. Although all of these features(特色) can be found in British culture, they do not stand for the real interests of ordinary British people. What is surprising is that they were suggested by British people themselves as their culture! If people have such a wrong impression of their own culture, how much more false would their impression(印象) of other cultures be!

66. If we stay a long time in a foreign country, _______.

    A. we will sometimes forget about the culture of our own country

B. we can often learn a lot about the culture of the foreign country

    D. have little information about culture

68. Many British people said that usual features of Britain were _______.

    A. village inns and castles B. newspapers

       C. foreign visitors D. British people themselves

69. When asked about their own culture, many British people _______.

       A. said they knew little about British culture

    B. said they themselves were not typical of British people

    C. gave wrong answers

    D. were surprised by the questions asked

70. It is easy to _______.

      A. know a lot about your own country’s culture

    B. get to know the culture of other countries

       C. give correct information about your own country

C

You are watching a film in which two men are having a fight. They hit one another hard. At the start they only fight with their fists. But soon they begin hitting one another over the heads with chairs. And so it goes on until one of the men crashes through a window and falls thirty feet to the ground below. He is dead!

Of course he isn’t really dead. With any luck he isn’t even hurt. Why? Because the men who fall out of high windows or jump from fast moving trains, who crash cars or even catch fire, are professionals. They do this for a living. These men are called stuntmen. That is to say, they perform tricks.

There are two sides to their work. They actually do most of the things you see on the screen. For example, they fall from a high building. However, they do not fall on to hard ground but on to empty cardboard boxes covered with a mattress(床垫). Again, when they hit one another with chairs, the chairs are made of soft wood and when they crash through windows, the glass is made of sugar!

But although their work depends on trick of this sort, it also needs a high degree of skill and training. Often a stuntman’s success depends on careful timing. For example, when he is “blown up” in a battle scene, he has to jump out of the way of the explosion just at the right moment.

Naturally stuntmen are well paid for their work, but they lead dangerous lives. They often get seriously injured, and sometimes killed. A Norwegian stuntman, for example, skied over the edge of a cliff(悬崖) a thousand feet high. His parachute failed to open, and he was killed.

In spite of all the risks, this is no longer a profession for men only. Men no longer dress up as women when actresses have to perform some dangerous action, for nowadays there are stuntgirls too.

71. Stuntmen are those who ______.

       A. often dress up as actors B. prefer to lead dangerous lives

    C. often perform seemingly dangerous actions  D. often fight each other for their lives

72. Stuntmen make their living by _______.

    A. playing their dirty tricks B. selling their special skills

    C. jumping out of high windows D. jumping from fast moving trains

73. When a stuntman falls from a high building, _______.

     A. he needs little protection B. he will be covered with a mattress

    C. his life is in danger D. his safety is often all right

74. Which of the following is the main factor(因素) of a successful stuntman?

    A. Strength. B. Exactness. C. Speed. D. Carefulness.

75. What can be inferred(推断) from the author’s example of the Norwegian stuntman?

    A. Sometimes an accident can happen to a stuntman.

    B. The percentage of serious accidents is high.

    C. Parachutes must be of good quality.

    D. The cliff is too high.

D

Every four years, Americans elect a president. According to the constitution any American citizen over 40 years of age who was born in the U. S. can be president. There are always many candidates who hope they will be elected(选举). There are many political parties in the United States, and most of these will have candidates for president. However, two political parties are much stronger than the others. They are called the Democratic Party and the Republican Party. For over a hundred years, the man elected as president has always been either a Democratic or a Republican.

All American citizens over 18 years of age can vote for a president. The process(过程) of electing a president takes nearly a year. During the election year there are many local elections, called primary elections, held in many of the fifty states. These elections show who the most popular candidates are. In primary election, usually held in the winter and spring, candidates run against members of their own parties. In this way they try to get support of party members, both parties have conventions where the party members make the final choice for the party’s presidential candidate. Each party chooses a person to run for president and a person to run for vice president. The two candidates work as a team. They will win or lose the election together. Once the final candidates are chosen, they go round the country, trying to win votes. The national election is held in November. The candidate who wins becomes president the following January. The election process is long and costly. Thousand of dollars are spent. Many people prepare to run for presidency for many years. Nearly all of these people fail to ever win.

B. Any American citizen over 18 years old can be president.

C. There are only two parties taking part in the presidential election.

D. All the presidents are of the Democratic Party or of the Republican Party in the past century.

C. candidates—primary elections—local election—parties’ conventions

D. local elections—primary elections—candidates—parties’ conventions—national election

78. What does the underlined words “primary election” mean?

A. General election B. State election
