Like other heavily polluted nations, India is trying to find new ways to produce more food to feed its ever-increasing(不断增长的) population. But one of the methods India has recently taken is as old as the Upanishads(《奥义书》). it’s called simply storing grain. Today in India, they are calling it the “Save Grain Campaign”, and it seems to be working.

By planning ahead, the country has opened more land and increased grain production from 51 million tons in 1951 to 192 million tons in 1995. India can now depend on its own grain supply. To reduce post-harvest losses, estimated(估计) at 9.33 percent of the nation output, the Indian Ministry of Food has taken several steps to let more people know more about scientific methods of grain storage.

The “Save Grain Campaign”, a pilot(试验性的) program in 1965, now is gaining popularity. There are 17 campaign offices across India. Campaign workers work closely with provincial governments to teach farmers scientific methods of storing food and pest control.

    C. a lot of farmland is wasted

    D. farmers know nothing about “Save Grain Campaign”

A young woman was driving through the lonely countryside. It was dark and raining. Suddenly she saw an old woman by the side of the road, holding her hand out as if she wanted a lift.

“I can’t leave her out in this weather,” the woman said to herself, so she stopped the car and opened the door.

“Do you want a lift?” she asked. The old woman nodded and climbed into the car. After a while, she said to the old woman, “Have you been waiting for a long time?” The old woman shook her head. “Strange.” thought the young woman. She tried again. “Bad weather for the time of year,” she said. The old woman nodded. No matter what the young woman said, the hitchhiker(搭车者) gave no answer except for a nod of the head or a shrug(耸肩).

Then the young woman noticed the hitchhiker’s hands, which were large and hairy. Suddenly she realized that the hitchhiker was actually a man! She stopped the car. “I can’t see out of the rear screen,” she said, “Would you mind clearing it for me?”

The hitchhiker nodded and opened the door. As soon as the hitchhiker was out of the car, the terrified young woman raced off.

HOLLYWOOD(UPI)— Loni Anderson decided last year it was time to change her career around to play moms and comedy instead of pretty young girls.

So far, most people remember her as Jennifer Marlowe, the role she played in her first film in 1982.

This summer people will see Anderson in “A Night at the Roxbury”, a film produced by Amy Heckerling.

“In the film I have two sons. One is 26, and the other is 30. Isn’t that interesting? I know I don’t look that old, but that’s what’s so funny about it.

“My character dresses in clothes too short, too tight. Dan Hedaya plays my husband. We’re a couple with a lot of money and no taste. Our sons are complete idiots. Their purpose in life is to get into the Rich Young Man Club where everybody is proud of his wealth.

“As you can tell, I’m doing things I’d never have done at the beginning of my career. But I am who I am. I’ve worked as an actress for a long time and now I can be anything I want to. It’s a great time for me. I haven’t done a comedy for a long time. It’s what I do best and what I like best. At this point in my life I want to look a little bit foolish. I think that would be something new for me.”

A. Pretty young girls. B. Old mothers.

C. Foolish persons. D. Rich women.

    A. That the producer was Amy Heckerling.

    B. That she played a rich woman.

    C. It isn’t mentioned in the passage.

    D. That she played the mum of a 26-year-old and a 30-year-old sons.

70. Where does this article most probably appear?

    A. In a newspaper. B. In a science magazine.

    C. In a tourist guidebook. D. In a historical record.

What exactly is a lie? Is it anything we say which we know is untrue? Or is it something more than that? For example , suppose a friend wants to borrow some money from you. You say, “I wish I could help you but I’m short of money myself.” In fact, you are not short of money but your friend is in the habit of not paying his debts and you don’t want to hurt his feelings by reminding him of this. Is this really a lie?

Professor Jerald Jellison of the University of Southern California has made a scientific study of lying. According to him, women are better liars than men, particularly when telling a “white lie”, such as when a woman at a party tells another woman that she likes her dress when she really thinks it looks terrible. However, this is only one side of the story. Other researchers say that men are more likely to tell serious lies, such as making a promise that they have no intention of carrying out. This is the kind of lie politicians and businessmen are supposed to be particularly skilled at: the lie from which the liar hopes to profit or gain in some way.

Research has also been done into the way people’s behavior(行为) changes in a number of small, apparently unimportant ways when they lie. It has been found that if they are sitting down at the time, they tend to move about in their chairs more than usual. To the trained observer they are saying “ I wish I were somewhere else now.” They also tend to touch certain parts of the face more often, in particular the nose. One explanation of this may be that lying causes a slight increase in blood pressure. The tip of the nose is very sensitive(敏感的) to such changes and the increased pressure makes it itch(发痒).

Another gesture which gives liars away is what the writer Decmond Morris in his book Man Watching calls “the mouth cover”. He says there are several typical forms of this, such as covering part of the mouth with the fingers, touching the upper lip or putting a finger of the hand at one side of the mouth. Such a gesture can be understood as an unconscious(不自觉的) attempt on the part of the liar to stop himself or herself from lying.

Of course, such gestures as rubbing the nose or covering the mouth, or moving about in a chair cannot be taken as proof that the speaker is lying . They simply tend to occur more frequently in this situation . It is not gesture alone that gives the liar away but a whole number of things, and in particular the context in which the lie is told.

71. According to the passage, a “white lie” seems to be a lie______.

   A. that other people believe B. that other people don’t believe

   C. told in order not to hurt someone’s feelings

   D. told in order to take advantage of someone

72. Research suggests that women __________.

   A. are better at telling less serious lies than men

   B. generally lie far more than men do

   C. often make promises they intend to break

   D. lie at parties more often than men do

73. Researchers find that when a person tells lies _______.

   A. his blood pressure increases measurably B. he looks very serious

   C. he is likely to make some small changes in his behavior

   D. he uses his unconscious mind

74. The tone(语气) of this passage tells us that the writer ________.

   A. hates lying B. enjoys lying

C. often tells a lie D. tries to study about lying

75. According to the text, the underlined word “proof “means ______.

    A. evidence B. hope C. idea D. quarrel
