My friend Alice decided to be a nurse when she was four years old. She always wanted to play at “doctor and nurse” with her playmates. When she left school last year, she still wanted to be a real nurse. One day she saw an advertisement in the newspaper:

DO YOU WANT TO HELP PEOPLE?

STUDY NURSING

SEND THIS FORM TO US FOR MORE INFORMATION

Alice filled in the coupon with her name and address. She cut it out and posted it at once.

Last September she started her studies in a big hospital in Newcastle. She had to work very hard. She went to classes every day and studied late at night. Then a really important day came -- her first day in a ward. They help to serve meals or wash the patients. They also keep the ward tidy and make the beds. They can not give injections or help the doctors.

One of Alice’s first jobs was in a ward of old people. She was told to clean all the patients’ false teeth. She collected all the teeth and took them to the bathroom. Instead of cleaning each set of teeth one by one, she put them all into one big bowl.

“It’ll be quicker this way,” she said to herself. “Then I can give back everyone’s teeth in a few minutes.”

Give back everyone’s teeth! Alice stood in the middle of the ward with her big bowl of teeth. She had no idea which teeth belonged to which old man! You can imagine the confusion of the next half-hour when each patient had to find his own teeth.

Microsoft founder Bill Gates said that he planned to give away almost all of his vast fortune, largely to the cause of global health, during the course of his lifetime. With an estimated(估计)worth of more than $ 40 billion , according to Forbes , the project will be no small feat (功绩)for Gates . Having already provided the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation with $ 24 billion to address global health issues , Gates said that eventually his entire fortune will be put towards the cause except “a few percent left for the kids.”

So what has made the richest man in the world to channel his resources so heavily into one interest? Gates believes that “the equality of opportunity” in which Americans take such pride needs to extend to other nations around the world. Improving the health of the populations, he says , has proven to be an essential method in helping poor countries to be financially successful . “National borders allow inequalities,” said Gates: “We all need to take a more global view, rather than just saying my country is doing well. We have to step up these health issues, knowing how few resources are going into them.”

Gates said that both his parents set an example for him as a child. His father, William H. Gates, was the head of the local Planned Parenthood, and his mother, Mary, volunteered for the United Way. As he gathered his fortune, Gates knew he would eventually want to give back as well, but he didn’t expect to devote himself whole-heartedly to one project until he was about 60.

However, Gates, 47, began to question his ability to wait that long. “It seemed there was a real time urgency,” Gates said. “I started to think, how many lives could I save before then?”

74. Bill Gates will give away his vast fortune to      .

A. improve the health of population in America alone

B. improve the health of population all over the world

C. avoid leaving his children too much money

D. spare the American government the burden of health care

75. Bill Gates believes that one important way of developing poor countries is      .

A. to set up more foundations for them       B. to aid them with natural resources

C. to put more effort into the health issues in them D. to help them take a more global view

76. It can be learned from the text that Bill Gates thinks      .

A. Americans should care about people in other countries

B. Americans should treat fellow citizens well

C. Americans should devote themselves to certain projects

D. Americans can be world-famous by giving away vast fortune

77. Bill Gates gave away his vast fortune earlier than he had expected because of      .

A. his weakening health condition B. his parents’ suggestions

  C. his great success in business D. his concerns for suffering people

Daniel Brown was just five years old when he climbed into the family car and let it roll away down the road. He was only three when he flooded the kitchen.

His mother, Angela Brown, is in despair(失望). She is very busy looking after her new baby, a little girl called Laura, as well as Daniel. She told us, “Daniel is so full of curiosity.” At that moment, we hear a huge crash and then silence. We go upstairs and find Daniel crawling out of a wardrobe (衣橱) he has pulled over onto the floor, with a book in his hand. “It’s for you, Mum,” he says and looks up at his mum and smiles. Seven-year-old Daniel has a lovely face. He has golden hair, big brown eyes, and a friendly smile. I have to admit that Daniel doesn’t look like a naughty(玩皮) boy.

Angela told me all about it. “Once I found him as he was about to put Jasper in the washing machine.” Jasper, she explained, is the Brown’s dog. “When I asked him why, he said that he thought Jasper was dirty! It’s amazing how one little boy cause so much trouble. Another time he cut off all the hair of the little girl next door. She was going to attend her sister’s wedding and the neighbors haven’t spoken to us since.”

Angela told me about Daniel’s most expensive crime. “I was about to do the washing up when the baby started crying. Daniel decided to help and filled the kitchen sink with water. When I came in the water was already flooding the kitchen and was about to flood the hall. The carpet was ruined and had to be replaced. I hope things will get better as he gets older.”

Amazingly, Daniel is quite well behaved in school. This may be because he is rarely bored. Meanwhile he continues to be the naughtiest little boy in England. Will his baby sister Laura grow up to be the naughtiest little girl?

78. What did Daniel do while his mother was talking to the writer?

 A. He drove away the family car B. He cut off the hair of the girl next door.

 C. He flooded the kitchen D. He fell to the floor with the wardrobe.

 C. He intended to make trouble D. He wished to draw his mother’s attention

80. It can be inferred (推断) from the passage that ______.

短文改错:(凡是不规范答题都视为错误答案)

`When I walked into the classroom, the teacher was handing

in the tests. I was feeling very nervous. I had not studied

at all at the weekend as I had thought it would be easy test.

I went through the test many times but I could only answer

three out from the twenty questions. I did not want to fail

the exam. Then, I put my book under my desk, opening it

and started looking for the answer. The teacher wasn't

looking at me, but I copied something. Suddenly, I felt a hand

on my shoulder! The teacher caught me cheating. I don't

know what to say. Luckily, the teacher did not punish for

cheating but instead of gave me a second chance.
