第二节 完形填空(共20小题;每小题1.5分,满分30分)

   阅读下面短文,掌握其大意,然后从21~40各题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。

When I come across a good article in reading newspapers, I often want to cut and keep it. But just as I am about to do so I find the article on the 21 side is as much interesting. It may be a discussion of the way to 22 in good health, or   23 about how to behave and conduct oneself in society. If I cut the front article, the opposite one is likely to 24 damage, leaving out half of it or keeping the text 25 the title. Therefore, the scissors (剪刀) would 26 before they start,   27 halfway done when I find out the 28 result.

Sometimes two things are to be done at the same time, both worth your 29 . You can only take up one of them, the other has to wait or be 30 up. But you know the future is unpredictable (不可预料) — the changed situation may not allow you to do what is left 31 . Thus you are 32 in a difficult position and feel sad. How 33 that nice chances and clever ideas should gather around all at once? It may happen that your life 34 greatly on you preference of one choice to the other.

In fact that is what 35 is like. We are often 36 with the two opposite sides of a thing which are both desirable like a newspaper cutting. It often occurs that our attention is drawn to one thing only 37 we get into another. The 38 may be more important than the latter and give rise to a divided mind. I 39 remember a philosopher’s remarks, “When one door shuts, another opens in life.” So a casual (不经意的) 40 may not be a bad one.

Dolphins are not fish, but warm–blooded animals. They live in groups, and speak to each other in their own language. In this way they are like other animals, such as bees and birds. But dolphins are very different from almost all land animals. Their brain is nearly the same size as our own and they live a long life—at least twenty or thirty years.

Like some animals, dolphins use sound to help them find their way around. They also make these sounds to talk to each other and to help them find food. We now know they do not use their ears to receive these sounds, but the lower part of the mouth, called the jaw.

Strangely, dolphins seem to like man, and for thousands of years there have been stories about the dolphin and its friendship with people.

There is a story about sailors in the 19th century. In a dangerous part of the sea off the coast of New Zealand, they learnt to look for a dolphin called Jack. From 1871 to 1903 Jack met every boat in the area and showed it the way. Then in 1903 a passenger on a boat called The Penguin shot and wounded Jack. He recovered and for nine years more continued to guide all ships through the area— except for The Penguin.

Today, some people continue to kill dolphins, but many countries of the world now protect them and in these places it is against the law to kill them.

41. Dolphins are different from many other animals because they _________.

A. live in groups B. have large brains C. are warm – blood    D. have their own language

43. Why did the sailors off the coast of New Zealand look for Jack?

A. He was lonely and liked to be with people.      B. They enjoyed playing with him.

C. He was seriously wounded. D. They wanted his help.

44. By telling the story of Jack the writer wanted to show that __________.

A. dolphins are friendly and clever. B. people are cruel to animals

C. Jack is different from other dolphins D. Dolphins should be protected by law

How to Use the Telephone for Work

Most of us use the telephone several times a day to talk with friends to make social arrangements. These calls are usually quite easy and need little planning.

Using the telephone for business purpose is different. In any organization the person on the telephone represents(代表)the company and gives and impression of the firm to the outside world. If you want to keep good public relations, you need to master effective telephone techniques. You should try to give an impression of an efficient (高效的)friendly, progressive company eager to give good service.

Before calling

Choose the right time. Consider the cost and convenience. When calling to a foreign country you need to consider the time difference.

Check the number. A great deal of money is wasted each year on dialing wrong numbers. Plan your call. Make a list of points and questions to be raised.

Be prepared. Gather all the information that may be needed during the call. It is not wise to have to say “Hold on while I look for that.”

If you have to ask a caller to hold on, do make it clear to the caller that you will be back as soon as possible.

During the call

Be kind and friendly. Make time for suitable greetings like “How are you today, Jim?” and “Did you enjoy your holiday”?

Put a smile in your voice. Remember ,your caller can’t see you, so use intonation(语调)that sounds decisive, helpful, and interested.

Check your notes. Look back at your notes to make sure that you have covered everything and used correct figures.

Get feedback. Make sure in a proper way that you know clearly the caller has understood the message correctly.

Be polite. Finish by thanking the caller for his or her time and trouble.

After the call

Make notes. Let it become a habit to write down every phone call you have made in a notebook.

Take actions. If you need to send a letter letting the caller know more information you haven’t yet mentioned in the talk, just do it immediately so that you won’t forget important points.

45. What’s the main idea of this passage?

     A. Using a telephone for business has strict rules.

     B. While making a business phone call ,you should be efficient first .

Children are our future, and it’s up to us to arm them with the tools to succeed. Sadly, today’s children are being armed with more dangerous toolslike weapons (武器), drugs and gangs. Once a relatively peaceful environment, many schoolyards of today are becoming unsafe for both students and teachers.

Home schools are available to give you choices. Home schooling provides top-quality education, flexibility, and freedom to create your own schedule(日程表). At Heritage Home School we believe the choice should be yours.

Thanks in part to modern technology, home schooling information is becoming readily available across our nation. A recent study by the ITBS (Iowa Tests of Basic Skills) and TAP (Tests of Achievement and Proficiency) shows us that students of home schools do particularly well when compared with the nationwide average. In every subject at every grade level, students of home schooling scored obviously higher than those in public and private schools.

If you’re new to home schooling, you may be asking yourself, “Will home schools really work for my children?”

Fact: A nationwide study using a random(任意)selection of 1,516 families found students of home schooling to be scoring, on average, at or above the 80th percentile in all areas on standardized achievement test.

Note: The national average on standardized achievement tests is the 50th percentile.

Collectively, the staff at Heritage Home School brings 65 years of experience in home schooling curriculum. We’ve placed students in the top 2 % of the nation in math and many are successfully moving on to college.

One study found that of the home schooled adults, 0% were unemployed, 0% were on welfare and 94% said home education prepared them to be independent persons.

It is probably the strangest sport anyone has ever invented. And at first sight, it looks like the easiest. Competitors have to do two things. The first is to stand still. The second is to place their hand anywhere on the body of a car, and keep it there.

This is where things start getting difficult. Lots of other people are doing the same thing. And the winner of the “handathon” contest is the person who can carry on doing it for the longest time. That person gets to own the car.

It still seems to be an easy thing to do. At the beginning it is. Anyone can stand still. But when the contest has been going for four or five days, standing still seems like the most difficult job in the world. And keeping the hand in place over this time becomes an act of serious attention. After a few days, the hand seems to belong to someone else — someone who wants to go home and get some sleep.

Competitors are allowed to take a five-minute break every hour to eat, drink or do whatever else is necessary. No one is allowed to lean on the car for support. Winners need to be able to show great powers of attention. They also need to be able to develop special skills.

Maybe the popularity of the handathon is due to the fact that it is not necessary to be a trained athlete to enter. Entrants in the Longview handathon certainly don’t seem to do much preparation. Most say they will prepare by “getting lots of sleep”. Others say they will “eat healthy food” or “pray for success”. The whole event gives ordinary people the chance to do something interesting and win something at the end.

Handathons are competitions, but there is little rivalry(敌对) between the competitors. They help each other out and keep each other’s spirits up. People who drop out early return with food, drink and encouragement for those still standing.

53. The reason why the sport is called “handathon” is probably that ______ in the competition.

A. people cover a long distance B. people keep hands in place long

C. people wave hands as long as possible D. people do the same thing as in marathon

54. What ability is likely to be most needed in handathon?

A. Standing without any support. B. Paying attention to not leaning on the car.

C. Eating and drinking in five minutes. D. Having strong powers of attention

55. Why is handathon popular?

A. Someone can win with special training. B. It doesn’t need to make any preparation.

C. Anyone who is interested can join in it. D. People get along well with each other in it.

56. What is the writer’s opinion about handathon?

A. It is worth having a try. B. It is the easiest of all sports.

C. It can purify people’s spirits. D. It is good not competing in it.

After the earthquake and tsunamis (海啸) hit southern Asia on Dec. 26, web sites and cell phones have become important tools for people to seek their family and friends missing in the disaster.

Seeking people on web sites

Soon after the earthquake and tsunami waves struck southern Asia on Dec. 26, people from all over the world began to post notes on various web sites to seek news about family or friends caught in the disaster.

On those web sites, the messages are brief but poignant (痛苦的): “Missing: Christina Blomee in Khao Lak” or “Where are you?” Some are nothing more than names, ages, nationalities. Others list details of where loved ones were last seen. Some have pictures of the missing.

The following are some of the messages posted by those desperate people seeking their loved ones on the web sites.

“Does anyone have news of my colleague Chuck Kearcik and his wife Melinda and children Candice and Charlie (US citizens working in Kuwait [科威特], vacationing (度假) in the Maldives [马尔代夫]) ?”

“He is an American citizen and is retired living on South Pattaya Beach (in Thailand). Please contact me with any information as I have no way to find or communicate with him right now! Please help me find my Dad!”

“I am desperately trying to contact my four-year old son Aidan Ashburn-Higgs and his father Jeffrey Ashburn who both flew into Thailand on Sunday. I have not heard from them since they left the airport in San Francisco. If you see this, please let me know you are safe.”

Cell phones help a lot

Besides websites, cell phones have also played an important role in the disaster. With cell phones, thousands of people in the disaster zone were able to send text messages (短信) to newspapers and television stations getting word back home.

In Sweden and Denmark, mobile phone operators stopped charging (收费) for mobile calls to and from Southeast Asia for 48 hours to make it easier for survivors to get in touch with their families.

“We thought it would be a nice move from cell phone companies,” said an official of a Swedish company.

The Swedish companies also sent text messages to all Swedish-registered phones in Thailand asking subscribers (用户) to call their families or the Swedish Embassy (瑞典大使馆).

Besides, cell phones were also used to track (追踪)people’s whereabouts (下落). In Denmark, telecom (电信) companies provided information about all cell phone communications between Denmark and Thailand, Indonesia and Sri Lanka (斯里兰卡) between Dec. 23 and Jan. 3. “This will allow us to identify people and find out when and what calls they make to map their whereabouts,” said a Danish official.

57. Khao Lak is probably  __________.

 A. a boy’s name B. a place in the disaster area C. a website D. a telephone

58. On those web sites, the messages for the missing are brief but poignant, not including __________

A. names B. the birthplaces C. the missing places D. nationalities

59. The Swedish companies also sent text messages _______

 A. to tell the user that mobile calls to and from Southeast Asia are free of charge.

C. to ask its users in the southern Asia to call their families or the Swedish Embassy

Dear Li Ming,

I am studying in Toronto University in Canada. Now I have a problem, which always troubles me, So I want to ask you for help.

Tom, who is one of my roommates, never pays attention to sanitation, leaving his things out of place. As he likes music, he often plays music loudly while others are having a rest. What’s worse, he often brings some of his friends to our room to drink, talking and laughing so loudly that we can’t have a good rest. Besides, what you can’t imagine is that he is always using others’ daily things without permission.

I have no idea what to do next. I am looking forward to hearing from you soon.

                                Yours,

                               Zhang Hua
