第三节:阅读理解(共20小题;每小题2分,满分40分)

                          A

The Internet dates back to 1969, when the U.S. Department of Defense decided to build an experimental network to make sure of computer-based command in the event of a nuclear attack. As the time went by, public and commercial networks in North America and Europe joined the system, and the expanding giant was born.

Until ten years ago, the Internet was actually the private fields of scientists and university students. During recent years, curious private citizens and businesses are crowding onto the Internet at a speed that is doubling its size every year.

Now computer networks have spread to form a giant global web. Some 100 million people from over 140 countries around the world have logged on to the Internet, a system linking tens of thousands of networks filled with information, discussion and entertainment. Millions of web pages contained in a great number of sites are commonly used to exhibit a mixture of texts, graphics, sounds and video clips, as well as links to other web pages.

On a typical day, data, as much as several million 250-page books, will pour through the Internet. Stored in the system are huge amounts of scholarly and scientific data, government documents and public records, airline timetables, weather reports, the full text of the Bible, and thousands of newspapers and magazines from around the world.

The Internet used can reach about 14,000 discussion forums (known as news groups) covering everything from medicine to sports, Chinese culture and French wines. By creating communities of people sharing common Internets, computer networks are making their influence felt in schools, in the business world, in politics and government.

What’s ahead? More convenience. In the next century, many commercial activities that require you to queue up in front of service counters, like paying bills or shopping, will be completed electronically through the information superhighway. You can do it at home and at any time. In the meantime, the rapid developing computer networks, by helping millions of users to work, learn and have fun online, are providing preview of the electronic future.

C. 50 million D. 75 million

A. Because the computer-users may save a lot of time by doing commercial activities through

  the computer.

B. Because the computer-users don’t have to pay bills with the help of the computer.

C. Because the computer-users spend less time queuing up.

D. Because the computer-users can queue up at any time to pay their bills.

            Electric shock

Injuries caused by electric shock are fairly common. When a person has received an electric shock, no one should go near him/her until the current has been turned off. If a shock occurring at work or at home causes someone to lose consciousness(知觉), electrical connection must be broken before anyone tries to give help. You should either turn off the switch at the mains or, if that is not possible, push the person away with a dry piece of wood.

          Treatment of shock

Look out for signs of shock. People who have been injured or who may have lost a lot of blood, or those who have had heart attacks, may be in deep shock. The signs to look for are faintness, paleness, a moist (潮湿的), sticky skin, shallow, rapid breathing and a fast but weak heartbeat.

Shock can prove fatal, and it is essential to do something to prevent its developing. The best way to treat or prevent shock is to keep the patient lying down, better with the legs higher than the head; if possible, raise the lower part of the body on a rolled-up packet or similar object. Make the patient as comfortable as possible, loosening any tight clothing, and comfort him/her because fright increases the effects of shock.

Accidents happen almost daily. Some accidents are minor and some are serious but others may be fatal. We read about such accidents nearly every day in the newspapers. It is wrong for people to think that accidents occur only on the roads or highways, or even at worksites. Home accidents are just as common. Because very few home accidents are reported, people tend to think that there are few accidents that happen in homes.

There have been many cases where people fall to their deaths from high-rise flats. Children often fall from staircases while coming down the stairs. Old people may slip on wet or slippery floors if they are not careful.

Nowadays there are a lot of modern electrical appliances such as rice-cookers, electric irons, and kettles which make life easy for the modern housewives. These appliances can kill if they are not used in the proper way.

Gas stoves used for cooking are also dangerous if they are not properly handled. They may cause burns or, in more serious cases, they may even cause fires.

But all such accidents can be prevented if we are careful and obey simple rules of safety. For example, it is unwise for people to try repairing their own electrical appliances if they do not know how. It is safer for them to get their faulty appliances repaired by a qualified electrician.

44. People think accidents happen only on the roads or highways because       .

           Way of Life for Students

The Internet is way of life for US college students, with research showing them to be one of the most connected groups.

A recent study by Harris Interactive and 360 Youth found that 93 percent of American college students visit the Internet, and this market is expected to grow from 15.2 million in 2003 to 16.4 million in 2007. That is slow but could be the result of the already high number of college Internet users.

About 88 percent of American college students own a computer, and more than half have broadband(宽带) connections. Furthermore, 67 percent use the cell phones and 36 percent use their mobile devices to visit the Internet. Study findings are that 42 percent go online mainly to communicate socially, and 72 percent of college students check emails at least once a day, with 66 percent using at least two email addresses.

The most popular online social activity is forwarding messages to friends of family, with 37 percent of college students saying they do so. The study also looked beyond the Internet surfing(冲浪) habits and into the buying habits of this group, and found them responsible for more than US $ 210 billion in sales last year alone.

College students have learned how to spend their money, with 93 percent saying low prices were important when shopping.

The study also showed that 65 percent make loan(贷款) payments; 41 percent of freshmen have a credit card; and 79 percent of seniors have a credit card. A significant number of charges on these credit cards are likely to be for entertainment and leisure expenses.

What do Harrison Ford, Mel Gibson and Phil Collins all have in common? They were all bullied(被欺负) at school.

If you’re being bullied, it doesn’t mean there is something wrong with you. You have a right to feel safe. If you are being bullied at school, it is the school’s responsibility to stop it. If you are being attacked outside of school, the police have the responsibility to help you.

The bully is the one with the problem

A lot of bullies are already being bullied themselves. They feel powerless and so they look for ways to feel tough at school or on the street.

Often, the bully is envious of other kids, so he picks on those who are cleverer, or those kids who have cool dress or more money. Usually bullies don’t like themselves, so they take out their frustrations(沮丧)on someone else, e.g. you.

What can you do?

★Look calm and confident even when you are not! You can practise this in the bathroom mirror.

★ If possible, ignore the bully. Bullies want a reaction(反应)—if you don’t seem upset or angry, they’ll often leave you alone.

★Walk away. Just because a bully starts an argument doesn’t mean you have to hang around and finish it.

★ Avoid being alone. Bullies are cowards (懦夫)who only pick a fight when they know they can win. If you are with friends, they are more likely to leave you alone.

Get help!

Tell an adult you can trust.

This doesn’t mean you are weak. In life you often need to get help from other people. When you have a broken leg, you get help from a doctor-it doesn’t mean you are weak. If you are being bullied you also get help. Bullies want you to keep quiet. When you speak up, you refuse to play the bully’s game. Telling others about the problem is a brave move.

Keep a diary of what is happening.

When you tell a teacher, a friendly adult, or the police, you need to have the facts: when, where and what happened. Keep to the facts. Avoid exaggerating(夸张). Keep telling people about the problem. If the first teacher doesn’t help, tell another and another. If the first adult doesn’t help, tell another. If the first policeman doesn’t help, tell another. Persist.

52. In the first paragraph, the author intends to       .

A. name several students who were bullied

B. tell us being bullied is a common problem at school

C. what the three students have in common

D. warn people of the three bullies

53. Bullies are usually those who       .

A. are stupid B. are poor

C. are full of envy D. have more power

54. To avoid bullies, you are advised to       .

A. be calm and confident

B. react bravely and show your confidence

C. hang around and argue with them

D. fight back against them

55. The underlined word “ignore” probably means .

A. fight B. stop

C. pay no attention to D. talk with

第五节:One possible version:

              How to Make Friends

Everyone needs friends, so how to make real friends is very important to everyone.

To make friends, you must be friendly to others. Smile at someone and you are almost sure to get a smile in return. You should do your best to make a stranger feel at home, no matter where he happens to be. Put yourself in the other’s position and make him feel he’s welcome. Besides, you should care more for others than for yourself.

When you don’t agree with people on certain matters, don’t argue but discuss with them. However, don’t believe in those who always betray their friends in trouble, because “A friend in need is a friend indeed.”

In my opinion, it is necessary to try to remember others’ names, which will impress them. Never look down upon those who are poor. In a word, you should treasrue the friendship between you and your friends, which is of great importance to keep up the friendship.
