Hobbs was an orphan(孤儿). He worked in a factory and every day he got a little money. Hard work made him thin and weak. He wanted to borrow a lot of money to learn to paint pictures, but he did not think he could pay off the debts.
One day the lawyer said to him, “One thousand dollars, and here is the money.” As Hobbs took the package of notes, he was very dumbfounded. He didn’t know where the money came from and how to spend it. He said to himself, “I could go to find a hotel and live like a rich man for a few days; or I give up my work in the factory and do what I’d like to do: painting pictures. I could do that for a few weeks, but what would I do after that? I should have lost my place in the factory and have no money to live on. If it were a little less money, I would buy a new coat, or a radio, or give a dinner to my friends. If it were more, I could give up the work and pay for painting pictures. But it’s too much for one and too little for the other.”
“Here is the reading of your uncle’s will(遗嘱),” said the lawyer, “telling what is to be done with this money after his death. I must ask you to remember one point. Your uncle has said you must bring me a paper showing exactly what you did with his money, as soon as you have spent it.”

They used to call her “the witch(女巫)”, but today I found things were different.
My legs were too short to reach the floor from up there on the big chair. I was so afraid. My legs started to shake.
It was the first time I had been to the principal’s(校长的) office. And I knew what she was going to ask me.
Why had I been running on the concrete(混凝土) in the playground? Why hadn’t I followed the school rules?
The principal’s secretary was sitting at her desk. She kept asking me questions like whether I liked school and what grade I was in. I didn’t want to talk to her, so I just gave one-word answers.
Then she asked what my dad did. But I didn’t really know what he did, so I made something up. “He plays basketball for the Boston Celtics,” I said.
The secretary just looked at me, and said nothing more.
Just then, the door to the principal’s office opened. There she was, the woman that everyone called “the witch”.
Was she really that bad? I was surprised to see her office walls were bright yellow, and there were some nice pictures on the desk.
She told me about the pictures. I was surprised that she had a family and a kid, just like me.
Then she asked how my family was. It turned out that she had known me since I was only a few weeks old. I was happy to hear that. If she knew my mum, then I wouldn’t get into much trouble.
She cleaned the cut on my knee and told me to be more careful. She also told me about the rules of the playground. But she didn’t punish or shout at me. And I forgot all the bad things I had heard about “the witch”. I had met her and I knew she was nice.

Is there anything more important than health? I don’t think so. “Health is the greatest wealth,” wise people say. You can’t be good at your studies or work well when you are ill.
If you have a headache, toothache, backache, earache or bad pain in the stomach, if you complain of a bad cough, if you run a high temperature and have a bad cold, or if you suffer from high or low blood pressure, I think you should go to the doctor.
The doctor will examine your throat, feel your pulse(脉搏), test your blood pressure, take your tem-perature, sound your heart and lungs, test your eyes, check your teeth or have your chest X-rayed. After that he will advise some treatment, or some medicine. The only thing you have to do is to follow his advice.
Speaking about doctor’s advice, I can’t help telling you a funny story.
An old gentleman came to see the doctor. The man was very ill. He told the doctor about his weakness, memory loss and serious problems with his heart and lungs. The doctor examined him and said there was no medicine for his disease.
He told his patient to go to a quiet place for a month and have a good rest. He also advised him to eat a lot of meat, drink two glasses of red wine every day and take long walks. In other words, the doctor advised him to follow the rule: “Eat at pleasure, drink with measure and enjoy life as it is.” The doctor also said that if the man wanted to be well again, he shouldn’t smoke more than one cigarette a day.
A month later the gentleman came into the doctor’s office. He looked cheerful and happy. He thanked the doctor and said that he had never felt a healthier man.
“But you know, doctor,” he said, “it’s not easy to begin smoking at my age.”

A. the man was a heavy smoker before seeing the doctor
B. the man didn’t smoke so much before seeing the doctor
C. the man didn’t smoke before seeing the doctor
D. the man began to learn to smoke before seeing the doctor

The last five minutes
This is really a very fast game, the fastest I have seen so far this year. Both sides are fighting for the ball all the time. The crowd is loving every minute of it. They are shouting at the top of their voices.
Willis has the ball now. This is only his third game for Scotland, but he’s playing so well that it won’t be his last, I’m quite sure.
Willis passes the ball to Cotton. Cotton kicks it over the heads of the waiting Frenchmen, towards the goalmouth(球门). But he’s too far away, Dupond picks it up easily, and throws it to Patou, out on the left.
France and Scotland still have one goal each, and there are only two minutes left of the game. But in that time, anything can happen. Patou kicks the ball across to Crozat. It’s a beautiful kick, but Steven jumps and just stops the ball with side of his head. But Meunier is there, he passes to Crozat, and Crozat, without waiting a second, puts the ball into the back of the goal. It takes everybody by surprise. I’ve never seen a goal like it.
72. The crowd enjoys every minute of the game because _______.
A. it’s very fast and exciting
B. it’s very fast but not exciting
C. neither side plays hard or fast all the time
D. both sides fight hard and shout loud all the time
73. Cotton cannot kick the ball into the goalmouth because _______.
A. the Frenchmen stop the ball with their heads
B. he is too far away
C. Patou picks the ball up easily
D. Willis is too far away from him
74. ________ are in the same team.
A. Crozat, Patou, Meunier and Dupond
B. Cotton, Patou, Willis and Dupond
C. Steven, Cotton, Meunier and Crozat
D. Steven, Patou, Meunier and Crozat
75. The underlined sentence “But in that time, anything can happen.” in the last
paragraph means “_______”.
A. Nothing more will happen to change the game
B. There is time for another goal
C. The game is nearly over
D. Anything can happen after the game

书面表达
Some people think students shouldn’t spend much time in the internet bar. First, being on net a lot will waste time which should be spent on the study and rest. Second, students need enough outdoor sports while online will do harm to their health, especially to their eyesight. Third, some contents on-line are not suitable for the students.
But other people think being in the internet bar is useful to students. The reasons mainly lie in three facts. First it can enlarge their knowledge and they can learn a lot that can’t be learned in class. Second, being on-line is a kind of relaxation, and it can actually enrich students’ life out of class. Above all, students can make a lot of true friends on-line, from whom they can get advice on many things.
