LeBron James may be the youngest player on the US Olympic basketball team, but you can hardly tell by looking at him or by watching him play.

“The first thing that hit me about him is the guy is huge,” says assistant Olympic coach Gregg Popovich of the San Antonio Spurs(圣安东尼奥马刺队). “I was shocked. He’s just so much bigger than I thought he was.”

James looks about 2 inches taller and 10 pounds heavier and has a nearly perfect basketball build.

After only two days of practice in preparation for Olympics, James has been just as impressive with his knowledge of the game and understanding of what the coaches are trying to teach as he has been with his physical skills. James, who will be 19 years and seven months old when the Games open on Aug. 13, is the youngest US male basketball player to take part since Spencer Haywood in 1968 (19 years, five months).

“He really understands the game,” Popovich adds. “Some guys get it and some guys don’t. This guy knows what’s going on — spatial(空间的) relationships on the court(篮球场), where the ball should go, what’s going on, what position to be in on the court. He really understands how to play the game.”

As the NBA rookie(新秀) of 2003 last season with the Cleveland Cavaliers, James started out playing point guard and then moved to shooting guard and played some at small forward, as well. His size and style of play has Brown think of using him at any of four positions other than center.

Watches are not as precious(珍贵的) today as they once were.

But to Liu Pinyi, 83, watches are priceless. The Beijing watch repairman has nearly 200 old watches filling two drawers in his shop. They aren’t his. He repaired them, but their owners never came for them.

Liu has been fixing watches for 60 years. Twenty years ago, he opened a watch repair shop named Jingshi. Thanks to his excellent skills, inexpensive charges, and trustworthiness, his shop won the favor of local people and was known far and wide. Liu himself has also been greatly honored. He has kept some watches neglected by their owners for up to eight years. They are not valuable, and thus have no collectible value(收藏价值). Some are only worth three or four yuan each.

“I keep these watches because they are possessions of my customers,” Liu said recently. “Whenever they come, they can take their watches back.”

More than a year ago, his shop moved because of city planning. Therefore, some old customers missed its location. Liu thus got high blood pressure from anxiousness. Not long ago, he heard that Ganluyuan Nanli, the neighborhood where his shop is now located, would be removed. The news embarrassed Liu much. He says he just wants a settled place to fix watches for customers.

As living standards rise, old watches lose their value. Some customers, however, travel every corner of the city to have their watches repaired. Liu travels everywhere to find a place to repair watches, not for himself, but for others.

67. Liu Pinyi has nearly 200 old watches filling two drawers because ______.

   A. he likes collecting watches

   B. his friends gave them to him as gifts

   C. his shop is selling watches

   D. their owners didn’t come to take them back

68. The customers coming to Jingshi ______ Liu Pinyi.

   C. a helper D. an advertisement

Wild boars(野猪) in rural areas around Beijing are destroying what could otherwise have been a good harvest.

Seventy-year-old Dong Decai is one of the victims(受害人) of the animals that ate up nearly one-third of his corn crop in the Sisi Village in Beijing’s Yanqing County in the past week. The same thing happened in the Jiuxianmiao Village near the Badaling section of the Great Wall. One villager surnamed Song said on Friday that much of his corn crop was ruined and there were lots of strange footprints left behind, reported the Beijing Times.

Footprints matched(与……相符) those usually left behind by wild boars. On Friday, the sound of firecrackers in the village could be heard from far away. “The fireworks can drive boars away,” said Song.

As the environment in Beijing’s suburbs improves, wildlife populations, including boars and pheasants(野鸡), in some mountainous villages are growing.

Forestry staff said farmers whose crops were destroyed by wild animals will receive compensation from the government, the Beijing News reported. Last year, 17,200 yuan (US$2,080) was paid to farmers in the Pianpoyu and Shuikouzi villages in Yanqing.

Boars, which used to appear sometimes, are now reproducing in large numbers. With no natural enemies in the area such as wolves, their numbers are growing.

Experts say the appearance of so many boars shows an improvement in the environment, but as their natural enemies have not recovered at the same speed, boars could cause big problems for farmers.

71. The second paragraph mainly tells us that ______.

   A. the villagers are badly in need of help

   B. the two villagers had bad luck

   C. wild boars have done great harm to corn crops

   D. the government paid little attention to their losses

72. The villagers set off firecrackers to ______.

   A. show their happiness B. attract visitors

   C. celebrate their harvest D. frighten boars

73. The number of boars keeps increasing ______.

   A. because of the development of its breeding ability

   B. so people should do their best to kill them

   C. which has recovered the balance of nature

   D. because of the improvement of the environment

74. The underlined word “compensation” (in Paragraph 5)means “______” in Chinese.

   A. 奖金 B. 赔偿 C. 提高 D. 工资

75. What would be the best title for the passage?

   A. How to protect the crops of farmers

   B. Environment protection needs improvement

   C. Every means should be used to deal with boars

   D. Wild boars become a headache for farmers

第二节

One possible version:

Dear Editor,

I am very happy to visit my hometown, which I have been away from for forty years. Everything there has greatly changed. All the villagers live a happy life. Seeing this, I couldn’t help appreciating the Party. But to my sorrow, a temple that is near my old living place with a history of more than several hundred years will be pulled down because of the village building. It is a pity that we can’t protect a symbol of the past. I think it is necessary for us to keep that site. All the villagers are very worried about it. So I write to you in order to arrest people’s attention.

 Yours sincerely,

Zhang Zhiwei
