Can trees talk? Yes―but not in words. Scientists have reasons to believe that trees do communicate with each other. Not long ago, researchers learned some surprising things. First, a willow tree attacked in the woods by caterpillars(毛虫)changed the chemistry of its leaves and made them taste so bad that the caterpillars got sick and stopped eating them. Then, even more astonishing, the tree sent out special vapors―an alarm signal stimulating(刺激)its neighbors to change the chemistry of their own leaves and make them less tasty.
Communication, of course, doesn’t need to be in words. We can talk to each other by a smile, frown(皱眉), a shrug(耸)of our shoulders, a gesture (姿势)with our shoulders, a gesture with our hands. We know that birds and animals use a whole vocabulary of songs, sounds, and movements. Bees dance their signals, flying in certain patterns that tell other bees where to find nectar(花蜜)for honey. So why shouldn’t trees have methods of sending messages.
60. It can be inferred (推断) from the passage that caterpillars do not feed on leaves that .
A. have an unpleasant taste B. are lying on the ground
C. have an unfamiliar shape D. are located near beehives(蜂窝)
61.The willow tree described in the passage protected itself by .
A. growing more branches
B. changing its leaf chemistry
C. communicating with birds and bees
D. providing shelter for caterpillars
62. According to the passage, the willow tree was able to communicate with other trees by .
A. waving its branches B. dropping its leaves
C. giving off a special vapor D. changing the color of its trunk
63.The word “methods” in the last sentence could best be replaced by .

Let Them Watch It
One hot night, when our new baby wouldn’t sleep, I tried everything I could think of : a warm bottle, songs, gentle rocking. Nothing would settle him. Guessing that I had a long night ahead of me, I brought a portable (手提的) TV into his room, thinking that watching the late movie was as good a way as any to kill off the hours until dawn(黎明). To my surprise, as soon as the TV was turned on , the baby quieted right down, his little eyes centered brightly on the screen. Not to waste a chance for sleep, I then tiptoed (踮起脚走)out of the room, leaving him to watch the actors celebrate John Bellushi’s forty-fifth birthday.
My wife and I heard no more of the baby that night, and the next morning when I went into his room, I found him still watching TV himself.
I found in my baby’s behavior a metaphor(暗喻) for the new generation. My wife and I had given him some books to examine, but he only spit(撕开) upon them. When we read to him, he did not feel comfortable. And so it is in the schools. We find that our students don’t read and they look down upon reading and scold(责备) those of us who teach it. All they want to do is watching TV. After this experience with the baby, however, I have reached a conclusion: “Let them watch it! If television is much more attractive to children than books, why should we fight it? Let them watch all they want!”
64. Why did the author(作者) bring a TV set into his son’s room?
A. To make his son stop crying.
B. To spend the night by watching TV programs.
C. To leave it to his son.
D. To make his son go to sleep as soon as possible.
65. The baby’s reaction(反应) to the TV program was __________.
A. unexpected B. excited C. terrible D. calm
66. From the passage we know that the author is _________.
A. a doctor B. an editor C. a writer D. a teacher
67. According to the passage, which is true of the school children?
A. They prefer reading to watching TV.
B. They like watching TV only after school.
C. They would rather watch TV than read books.
D. They like their teachers who teach them reading.

I’m a middle school student . I do well in my studies, but I have a problem that troubles me all the time . It is the relationship between my mother and me . My mother is a university professor , who works very hard . She is strict with me , but finds little time to talk to me . I love her , but I’m a little afraid of her because she loses her temper easily . I don’t know how to communicate with her . Maybe it’s because we have seldom sat down and exchanged our feelings and thoughts . I hope we can know more about each other and understand each other better . I do hope we’ll be closer . What can I do ?
Sincerely yours ,
