Although English is not as old as Chinese, it is spoken by many people around the world every day. English speakers are always creating new words, and we should be able to know where most words come from.
Sometimes, however, no one may know really where a word comes from. Did you ever think about why hamburgers are called hamburgers, especially when they are not made with ham( 火腿 )? About a hundred years ago, some men went to America from Europe. They came from a big city in Germany called Hamburger. They didn’t speak good English, but they ate good food. When some Americans saw them eating round pieces of beef, they asked the Germans what it was. The Germans did not understand the question and answered. “We came from Hamburger.” One of these Americans owned a restaurant, and had an idea. He cooked some round pieces of beef like what the men from Hamburger ate. Then he put them between two pieces of bread and started selling them. Today “ hamburgers” are sold in many countries around the world.
Whether this story is true or not, it certainly is interesting. Knowing why any word has a certain meaning is interesting, too. The reason may be found in any large English dictionary.

55.According to the story, the word “hamburger” comes from ________.

Letter to Editor of TV Weekly
Dear Sir/Madam,
I read Alison Burnham’s review of When we were 12, and I do not agree with her. I thought the programme was wonderful — I found the old news pictures really interesting — they helped to bring to life the stories the people were telling.
The programme reminds me of many things from my own childhood. For example, one day when I was about five, I was going to school on the bus by myself (this was the late 1960s). My mother had given me exactly the right money for a return ticket. I held out my hand with the money in it — one big coin on top of one little coin. The bus conductor took the big top coin only and she gave me a ticket, but it was a pink one for a single journey. I needed a white one for a return journey, but I was too frightened to say anything. When school finished for the day, I couldn’t catch the bus home — I had to walk. As a grown- up, whenever I’ve been in a situation where I need to say something or take some action, this early memory of my bus ride comes back to me, and I’m able to take control of the situation.
I would like to say to the director, Bret Chrysler, carry on making this kind of programme. Too much TV these days is quiz shows and so-called “reality programmes”.I appreciate the human story that can make me laugh and cry.
Yours faithfully,
Chris Daniels

A. To persuade Bret Chrysler to turn away from quiz shows.
B. To entertain (使。。。感兴趣)other readers with old news pictures.

58. According to the passage, Chris Daniels had to walk home because .
A. he hadn’t got a return ticket
B. he had lost his bus ticket
C. he didn’t like big crowds
D. he missed the bus home
59. What does Chris Daniels now think about his experience on the bus?
A. He should have told the conductor then.
B. He should have been well treated.
C. He regrets going to school alone.
D. He wishes it hadn’t happened.
60.Why didn’t the boy say anything to the conductor when he took the big coin only?
A. Because the boy didn’t want the return ticket
B. Because the boy didn’t have enough money for return ticket
C. Because the boy didn’t notice this
D. Because the boy was afraid
C
What Is Shyness
People often talk as if shyness is a disease or mental condition that can be cured. I prefer to think of it as an emotional disability(残疾). It is something we are born with and something we carry with us in our entire lives. There are too many people , however, who seem to be determined to(下决心) find some way of doing away with their shyness. In my opinion, it’s a waste of time. I don’t mean that we should do nothing about it. On the contrary( 相反的 ), I think we need to separate the basic fact of our shyness from our ability to take part in a social environment.
Look at one of the most famous shy people of them all, Johnny Carson. This man is painfully shy, yet for decades( 几十年 ) he made a living talking and associating( 交往 ) with different people every night, in front of a national audience( 听众,观众 ). Carson has never done away with his shyness, but he has successfully found a way to deal with it to the extent( 到这种程度 )that he could be, not just a talk show host( 主持人 ), but a legend( 传奇 ) among talk show hosts. Look also at Sally Fields, who has recently admitted her problem with shyness. This is a woman who has appeared in many films, TV shows and interviews, yet in her early years she was so shy that she turned down( 拒绝 ) a lunch invitation from Jane Fonda because she was terribly afraid of meeting her.
I guess that our shyness is there because each of us is born with some insecurity(不安全 ) and this insecurity prevents us from reaching out to others the way people with a more open personality do. As we grow up and become adults, we allow our social skills to grow and develop. But we are still stuck in kindergarten or elementary school or wherever it was when our shyness took root(扎根)in our soul.
61. In the author’s(作者) view, shyness can be explained as ________.
A. a disease that can be easily cured
B. a not very normal mental condition
C. an emotional disability
D. something we pick up after birth
62. The author believes it’s a waste of time to __________.
A. develop a healthy personality
B. talk with as many people as possibly
C. study where shyness comes from
D. look for ways to do away with one’s shyness
63. Which of the following is TRUE of Johnny Carson?
A. He dared to speak in front of a national audience
B. He did away with his shyness carefully
C. He was described as a hero in some legend books
D. He failed to become a good talk show host
64. The passage tells us that Sally Fields was _______.
A. proud all the time
B. impolite when young
C. shy in her early years
D. close to Jane Fonda
65. The author thinks that our shyness is there because_______.
A. we are not open enough
B. we don’t feel secure at heart
C. we try to reach out to others all the time
D. we lack (缺少) some social skills
D
Everybody may have seen the film Death on the Nile, but nobody can imagine that the writer of the story, Agatha Christie, saved a baby in a most unusual way.
In June 1977,a baby girl became seriously ill in Deleville. Doctors there were unable to find out the cause of her illness, so she was sent to a famous hospital in London, where there were many excellent doctors. The baby was so seriously ill that a team of doctors hurried to examine her without any delay. The doctors, too, were puzzled by the baby’s illness, and they also became discouraged. Just then a nurse asked to speak to them.
“I think the baby is suffering from thallium poisoning(铊中毒),”said the nurse.“A few days ago, I read a story A Pale Horse written by Agatha Christie. Someone uses thallium poison, and all the symptoms are written in the book. They are exactly the same as the baby’s.”
“You’re very good at observing(观察) things,” said a doctor, “and you may be right. We’ll carry out some tests and find out whether the cause is thallium poisoning or not.”
The tests proved that the baby had indeed been poisoned by thallium. Once they knew the cause, the doctors were able to give her correct treatment. The baby soon got well and was sent back to Deleville. A week later it was reported that the poison might have come from an insecticide(杀虫剂).

IV Composition
At the beginning of the new year, my parents bought me a computer as a gift.
I like it very much, for it’s changed my life a lot. First, it’s a good help to my study. I can improve my lessons with software. Besides, I can collect necessary information from the Internet, which helps increase my knowledge. Then, it also brings me a lot of fun. I like computer games and enjoy chatting with friends online. In fact I often send e-mails to my friends telling them about what I think of or feel in my life. I think I can make good use of it and I won’t spend too much time on games.
