Most people have had a dog or wanted one as their companion at some time in their lives. If you are thinking of buying a dog, however, you should first decide what sort of companion you need and whether the dog is likely to be happy in the surroundings you can provide. Specialists' advice is useful to help you choose the most suitable kind of dog. But in part the decision depends on common sense. Different dogs were originally developed to perform specific tasks. So, if you want a dog to protect you or your house, for example, you should choose the one that has the right size and characteristics. You must also be ready to devote a great deal of time to training the dog when it is young and give it the exercise it needs throughout its life, unless you live in the countryside and can let it run freely. Dogs are demanding pets. Cats love the house and so are satisfactory with their place where it is secure, but a dog is loyal to its master and consequently wants him to show proof of his affection. The best time to buy a baby dog is when it is between 6 and 8 weeks old so that it can transfer its love from its mother to its master. If baby dogs have not established a relationship with the human being until they are over three months old, their strong relationship will always be with dogs. They are likely to be shy when they are brought out into the world to become good pets.

64. Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?

C. Whether the dog will fit the environment.

D. Whether the dog will get along with the other pets in the house.

66. Why does the writer say a dog is a more demanding pet than a cat?

A. It must be trained so that it won't bite.

B. It demands more food and space.

C. It needs more love and care.

D. It must be looked after carefully.

67. Why is it advised to buy a baby dog under three months old?

A. It's easier to buy a baby dog under three months old.

B. They are less likely to be shy with human beings.

C. They are less likely to run away.

D. It's easier for them to form a relationship with their masters.

Having returned from her round trip, the angry woman stood outside the ticket office of the station. “The railway owes me £12,” she said to Harry Jenks, the young man working at the office. “You sold me a ticket for May 22nd, but there was no ship from Jersey that night. So my daughter and I had to stay in a hotel. It cost me £12.”

Harry was worried. He remembered selling the woman a return ticket. “Come into the office. Madam,” he said politely. “I'll just check the Jersey timetable for May 22nd.”

The woman and her little girl followed him inside. She was quite right, as Harry soon discovered. There was no sailing on May 22nd. How could he have made such a careless mistake? He shouldn't have sold her a ticket for that day. Wondering what to do, he smiled at the child. “You look sunburnt,” he said to her. “Did you have a nice holiday in Jersey?”

“Yes,” she answered, shyly. “The beach was lovely. And I can swim too!”

“That's fine,” said Harry. “My little girl can't swim a bit yet. Of course, she's only three...” “I'm

four,” the child said proudly. “I'll be four and a half.”

Harry turned to the mother. “I remember your ticket. Madam,” he said. “But you didn't get one for your daughter, did you?”

"Er, well—"the woman looked at the child. “I mean. . . she hasn't started school yet. She's only

four.”

“A four-year-old child must have a ticket, Madam. A child's return ticket to Jersey costs ... let me

see ... £l3. 50. So if the railway pays your hotel, you will owe £l. 50. The law is the law, but since the fault was mine....”

Dear editor,

I spend most of my time studying. I hardly talk to my classmates. Sometimes I think I am not so concerned about others, but there are times that I do want to talk. I just don't know what to talk about and how to begin a conversation. 71 . How I wish I had a good friend!

Emma

Dear Emma,

Your problem is like a circle. The harder you study, the less time you have to make friends and the less friendly you look to your classmates. 72 Try to break this sad circle. Perhaps you are afraid of meeting new people, because you are too shy or too serious. You arc not. Everyone has a fun side of his character. 73

It is OK to do this slowly. It takes time to get to know a person and find someone with whom you really get along.

Look at your classmates. Are there any people with whom you feel you have a lot in common?

First, smile at your classmates. Do this as often as you can, until your classmates become used to your smiles and smile in return.

Next, talk to your classmates. Do this between classes or during your lunch break. 74 You may find it easier to start by talking to people when they are alone, instead of in a group.

Perhaps you could ask a classmate about your studies. They are likely to respond (回应) in a very positive way. People like to feel important and useful.

There must be someone else in your class who is also quiet. 75 You should have confidence. Smile first, talk next and slowly you will make friends. Once you have more confidence, yon can make as many friends as you want.

A. Push your shy side away and show your classmates how fun you can be.

B. Make sure that they are not busy.

C. It might be easier to try to talk with him or her.

D. You will not suffer from loneliness if you make friends with others.

E. I feel so lonely.

F. The fewer friends you have, the harder you study to make yourself feel better.

Dear Mr Zhang,
Recently we have had a discussion about having desk mates of the different sex..
Some students don’t agree to sit next to someone different. They think the boys are naughty, noisy and sometimes rude. While the girls are gentle, kind-hearted and lovely. If boys sit next to girls, it is hard to get on well with each other.
They also say teenagers cannot control themselves very well. If a boy and a girl become desk mates, they may become closer and develop feelings for each other. They would spend a lot of time handling their relationship. That would be a waste of time.
At the same time, others believe boys and girls should be desk mates. Everyone has his or her own good points. Boys are usually good at science, while girls often do well in the arts. They can overcome their weak points by learning from others’ strong points. They say there can be a pure friendship between boys and girls.
Yours,
LiHua
