阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项( A 、 B 、 C 和 D )中,选出最佳选项。

Is there anything more important than health? I don't think so. “Health is the greatest wealth( 财富 ),” wise people say. You can't be good at your studies or work well when you are ill.

If you have a headache, toothache, backache, earache or bad pain in the stomach, if you complain of a bad cough, if you run a high temperature and have a bad cold, or if you suffer from high or low blood pressure, I think you should go to the doctor.

The doctor will examine your throat, feel your pulse, test your blood pressure, take your temperature, sound your heart and lungs, test your eyes, check your teeth or have your chest X-rayed. After that he will advise some treatment, or some medicine. The only thing you have to do is to follow his advice.

Speaking about doctor's advice, I can't help telling you a funny story.

An old gentleman came to see the doctor. The man was very ill. He told the doctor about his weakness, memory loss and serious problems with his heart and lungs. The doctor examined him and said there was no medicine for his disease.

He told his patient to go to a quiet place for a month and have a good rest. He also advised him to eat a lot of meat, drink two glasses of red wine every day and take long walks. In other words, the doctor advised him to follow the rule: “Eat at pleasure, drink with measure and enjoy life as it is.” The doctor also said that if the man wanted to be well again, he shouldn't smoke more than one cigarette a day.

A month later the gentleman came into the doctor's office. He looked cheerful and happy. He thanked the doctor and said that he had never felt a healthier man.

“But you know, doctor,” he said, “it's not easy to begin smoking at my age.”

39. From the last sentence of the passage, we learn the man before the doctor told him not to smoke more than one cigarette a day.

A. was a heavy smoker B. didn't smoke so much

C. didn't smoke D. began to learn to smoke

40. Which of the following is NOT true?

A. The doctor usually tests his/her blood pressure when a person is ill.

B. The man told the doctor he couldn't remember things.

Do you love holidays but hate the increase weight that follows? You are not alone.

Holidays are happy days with pleasure and delicious foods. Many people, however, are worried about the weight that comes along with these delicious foods.

With proper planning, though, it is possible to con-trol your weight. The idea is to enjoy the holidays but not to eat too much. You don't have to turn away from the foods that you enjoy. The following suggestions may be of some help to you.

Do not miss meals. Before you leave home for a feast (宴会), have a small, low-fat snack(小吃). This may help to keep you from getting too excited before de-licious foods.

Begin with clear soup and fruit or vegetables. A large glass of water before you eat may help you feel full. Use a small plate; a large plate will encourage you to have more than enough.

Better not have high-fat foods. Dishes that look oily or creamy have much fat in them.

Choose lean meat (瘦肉). Fill your plate with salad and green vegetables.

If you have a sweet tooth, try mints (薄荷) and fruits. They don't have fat content as cream and chocolate.

Don't let exercise take a break during the holidays. A 20-minute walk after a meal can help burn off excess (过多的) calories.

The food we eat seems to have deep effects on our health. Although science has made very large steps in making food more fit to eat, it has, at same time, made some food unfit to eat. Some research has shown that perhaps eighty percent of all human illness are connected with food and forty percent of cancer(癌症) is connected with food as well. Different cultures(文化) are more probable to get certain illnesses because of the food that is characteristic(特征) in these cultures. That food is connected with illness is not a new discovery. In 1945, American researchers realized that nitrates(硝酸盐) and nitrites (亚硝酸盐), commonly used to protect color in meats, and other food additives (添加剂), caused cancer. Yet these carcinogenic additives remain in our food, and it becomes more difficult, all the time, to know which things on the packaging label (标签) of treated food are helpful or harmful. The additives which we eat are not all so direct.

Farmers often give penicillin to beef and poultry(猪肉) and because of this, penicillin has been found in the milk of treated cows.

Sometimes similar medicine is given to animals not for medical treatment , but for financial(经济的) reasons, the farmers are simply trying to fatten the animals for more money on the market.

46. “Different cultures are more probable to get certain illnesses because of the food that is characteristic in these cultures.” This sentence means ______.

A. cultures may bring about diseases to human beings

B. people in different countries probably understand cultures and diseases in different ways

C. people in different countries may suffer from the same diseases

D. different customs of diet probably bring about different diseases

47. The word “carcinogenic” means “______”.

A. trouble-making B. money-making C. color-protecting D. cancer-causing

48. Which of the following statements is not true?

A. Food is the cause of eighty percent of all human illness.

B. Some additives are added to the food and some to the living animals.

C. Researchers have known about such harm for over 45 years.

49. Since about 80 percent of all human illness are connected with food, ______.

A. we should never be on a diet

B. we should not eat packaged food

C. we should be more careful of our food

D. we should eat fresh food

50. The writer wants to tell the readers ______.

A. man should avoid(避免) eating treated food such as beef, poultry

B. man has come to realize that food has something to do with illness

C. sometimes science brings about ill effects to mankind

D. people must prevent farmers giving penicillin to animals

D

Feeling tired lately? Has the doctor said he cannot find anything wrong with you? Perhaps he sent you to a hospital, but all the advanced equipment there shows that there is nothing wrong.

Then consider this, you might be in a state of subhealth(不完全健康的状况).

Subhealth, also called the third state or grey state, is explained as a border line state between health and disease. According to an investigation by the National Health Organization, over 45% of subhealthy people are middle-aged or elderly. The percentage is even higher among people who work in management positions as well as students around exam time.

Symptoms (症状) include a lack of energy, depression, slow reactions, insomnia (失眠), and poor memory. Other symptoms include shortness of breath, sweating and aching in the waist and legs.

The key to preventing and recovering from subhealth, according to some medical experts, is to form good living habits, alternate work with rest exercise regularly, and take part in open-air activities.

As for meals, people are advised to eat less salt and sugar. They should also eat more fresh vegetables, fruits, fish because they are rich in nutritional elements--vitamins and trace elements(微量元素)--that are important to the body.

Nutrition experts point out that it is not good to eat too much at one meal because it may cause unhealthy changes in the digestive system. They also say that a balanced diet is very helpful in avoiding subheahh.

51. When you are in a state of subhealth, you should________.

A. stay home and keep quiet.

One possible version:

As is known to all, a balanced diet is the first important for our health.

Taking a look at the food pyramid, you can find that grain is our main food, containing rich complex carbohydrates which provides us with the energy to live on and grow. It is right for us to have vegetables, fruit and nuts. As you see, fibre and vitamins in them help to keep us fit (healthy) and strong. Also, we should have meat, eggs and milk because they are rich in protein, which can build our muscles.

Sometimes, we eat chocolate to add to calories when necessary. On the other hand, to stay healthy, enough exercise is a must for us all.
