The world’s oldest man, 112-year-old Antonio Todde died on the Italian island of Sardinia.
Todde made it into the Guinness Book of Records when he turned 112 last year and wore his crown of “The Oldest Living Man on Earth” with pride and a sense of humor.
Born in a tiny mountain village in 1889, the same year work on the Eiffel Tower was completed and baby Adolf Hitler took his first breath, Todde seldom left the village. He lived in the same house with his wife of 78 years, Maria Antonia, all his life.
He witnessed (见证) the two World Wars, a technological revolution and saw the world’s population quadruple (四倍) but was untroubled by the passing of the years.
“His life was very simple but those 100 years, he lived them to the full,” said Mariolina, recalling how he liked to play cards with his friends and go for long walks.
Todde’s life and that of his fellow islanders is the focus of a scientific study.
A remarkable number of Sardinia’s 1.6 million people live through a century. Some 135 people per million live to see their 100th birthday.
Todde’s own family seems a case in point—his two daughters are 78 and 81 separately and his sister is 98.
The answer to the often-posed question of just how he managed it was simple for Antonio.

People today expect to be examined when they enter a doctor’s office. At least they expect their blood pressure and temperature to be measured. However, as recently as two hundred years ago, a doctor’s treatment depended on talking with the patient. In general, the communication between doctors and patients was the most important part of medical methods. The modern age of medicine began with the stethoscope, an instrument for listening to patient’s heartbeat and breathing. Before that, a doctor did not touch a patient. In fact there was no such thing as a medical examination. All treatment was the result of the patient’s telling the doctor what the problem was and the doctor’s being able to understand it.
The stethoscope…and all the other medical instruments…had a section effect on the practice of medicine. Doctors became better at finding the medical problems. More lives were saved. At the same time, doctors give less importance to the communication between patients and doctors. Some doctors actually stopped talking to their patients. It is easy to understand why some sick people thought of themselves as broken machines.

Switzerland has long prided itself on the quality of its private secondary schools. The reputation(名誉) of these schools for providing a nice education is very good. Additionally, they offer parents the security(安全) of knowing that their children are growing up in a reasonably crime-free area(非犯罪区) and that they are safe from many of the problems that may exist in their own countries.
“Security is a major factor among many parents for choosing a school in Switzerland,” says Jean Pierre du Pasquier, director of the Ecole Lemania.
Parents like the fact that Switzerland is a low-crime area, where kidnapping(绑架) is unknown. While Switzerland does have its problems with teenage drug use, as does every other European nation, Switzerland’s private schools still have strict drug policies and in most cases a single use can result in expulsion(开除).
Another advantage for the student is that these days, a child is likely to be not only in an international environment, but also to be studying with international students. In the past, most foreign students came from North America, England and other part of Europe. Today, they also come from Russia, China, Japan, Malaysia, Israel, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia.
Le Rosey, the College Du Leman and the Leysin American School all have international student bodies. The great outdoors students at Chantemerle and at Monte Rosa, both of which are near Montreux, report that the opportunity to live in or near the mountains and take advantage of all the exciting activities they offer makes life much richer.
Student bodies in schools in Saanen-Gastaad takes grade school students throughout the year and also holds summer camp. Children here are taught in English, but they hear French and German around them all the time.
In this way they quickly become skilled in skiing and other winter sports and develop a strong interest in nature, which is all around them.

With the development of the internet , more and more people tend to send electronic cards instead of paper ones at New Year’s time . Compared with the traditional cards, electronic cards are more interesting and lively, for you can get not only pictures but also sound and even animations. Besides, it’s faster to send an electronic card. There are many web sites on line where different varieties of cards are available. If none of these cards are of any interest to you, you can design different cards using flash or other software. More importantly, with the popularity of electronic cards, less paper is used for making paper cards, which contribute to the environment protection.
