My mother seemed to be able to make dolls (洋娃娃) out of anything. She made some dolls for me and my two elder sisters. I 36 playing with them, but still, secretly, I hoped for a store-bought 37 like the one our rich cousin had. Her doll 38 open and close its blue glass eyes and even say "Mamma". I 39 stopped admiring it and hoping to have one.

However, my dream 40 came true when I was six. One day my father came back from his business trip with three 41 dolls! They were much smaller than our cousin’s doll and their eyes were just painted ones, but I did not 42 such differences. They were 43 "store-bought" dolls. We each chose one and I named 44 Misako.

Soon my sisters and I became 45. Our "children" kept us 46 all day. We gave them a bath, 47 them, brushed their hair, took them out for a walk and put them to bed. Several months later, they got more like real children — their 48 and bodies became dirtier; their dresses got stained; their hair less smooth.

But, by then, 49 interests seemed to have moved into 50 toys. Their dolls were abandoned (被抛弃) and in bad condition. One had 51 one of her arms, and 52 was one-legged. "You can 53 them if you want," my sisters said to me. Thus, I had 54 dolls. They were more or less handicapped (残疾) and they often looked at me as if they needed me to 55 them. I enjoyed this feeling of being needed — being the only one in the world who could protect them with a lot of love. Indeed, they made the rest of my childhood days very happy.

第三节:阅读理解(共12小题;每小题3分,满分30分)

                      A

Do you find getting up in the morning so difficult that it’s painful? This might be called laziness, but Dr. Kleitman has a new explanation. He has proved that everyone has a daily energy cycle.

During the hours when you labor through your work, you may say that you’re “hot”. That’s true. The time of day when you feel most energetic is when your cycle of body temperature is at its peak. For some people that peak comes during the forenoon. For others it comes in the afternoon or evening. No one has discovered why this is so, but it leads to such familiar monologues (自言自语) as “Get up, John! You’ll be late for work again!” The possible explanation to the trouble is that John is at his temperature and energy peak in the evening. Much family quarrelling ends when husbands and wives realize what these energy cycles mean, and which cycle each member of the family has.

You can’t change your energy cycle, but you can make your life fit it better. Habit can help. Dr. Kleitman believes. Maybe you’re sleepy in the evening but feel you must stay up late anyway. Counteract (打乱) your cycle to some extent by habitually staying up later than you want to. If your energy is low in the morning but you have an important job to do early in the day, rise before your usual hour. This won’t change your cycle, but you’ll get up steam and work better at your low point.

Get off to a slow start which saves your energy. Get up with a yawn (呵欠) and stretch. Sit on the edge of the bed a minute before putting your feet on the floor. Avoid the troublesome search for clean clothes by laying them out the night before. Whenever possible, do routine (常规的) work in the afternoon and save tasks requiring more energy for your sharper hours.

36. Which of the following causes family quarrels?

    A. Not knowing each other’s energy cycle.

    B. Familiar monologues between husband and wife.

    C. A change in a family member’s energy cycle.

    D. Attempts to control the energy of other family members.

37. If you want to work better at your low point in the morning, you should ______.

    A. change your energy cycle B. overcome your laziness

    C. get up early than usual D. go to bed earlier

38. You are advised to rise with a yawn and stretch because it will ______.

    A. help to keep your energy for the day’s work

    B. help you to control your temper early in the day

    C. enable you to get your energy on your routine work

    D. keep your energy cycle under control all day

39. What’s the best title of the passage?

    A. Change Your Habits B. Save Your Energy

    C. Daily Energy Cycle D. Temperature-and-Energy Peak

I used to dream about Pisa when I was a boy. I read about the famous building called the Leaning Tower of Pisa. But when I read the word Pisa, I was thinking of pizza. I thought this tower was a place to buy pizza. It must be the best pizza in the world, I thought. Many years later I finally saw the Leaning Tower. I knew then that it was Pisa and not pizza. But there was still something special about it for me. The tower got its name because it really does lean to one side. Some people want to try to fix it. They are afraid it may fall over and they do not like the way it looks. I do not think it's a good idea to try to fix it. The tower probably will not fall down. It is 600 years old. Why should anything happen now? And, if you ask me, I like the way it looks. I like the way it leans over the city. To me it is a very human kind of leaning. Nothing is perfect, it seems to say. And who cares? Why do people want things to be perfect? Imperfect things may be more interesting. Let's take the tower in Pisa.

Why is it so famous? There are many other older, more beautiful towers in Italy. But Pisa tower is the most famous. People come from all over the world to see it.

40. This passage is about ____.

A. Italian pizza               B. Italy's problems

C. how the Leaning Tower of Pisa got its name D. why the author likes Pisa

41. The writer _________.

A. doesn't like the way the tower looks      B. likes the way the tower looks

C. thinks it's the most beautiful tower in Italy D. doesn't like towers

42. The writer likes the Leaning Tower of Pisa because ______.

A. it's old B. it's perfect     C. it sells pizza D. it's imperfect

One Sunday, Mark decided to go sailing in his boat with his friend Dan, but Dan happened to be away. Dan’s brother John offered to go instead, though he did not know anything about sailing. Mark agreed and they set out to sea. Soon they found themselves in a thick fog(雾). Mark was sure they would be hit by a big ship. Fortunately, he saw a large buoy(浮标) through the fog and decided to tie the boat to it for safety. As he was getting onto the buoy, however, he dropped the wet rope. The boat moved away in the fog carrying John who did not know how to use the radio. He drifted(漂) about and was not seen until twelve hours later.

Mark spent the night on the buoy. In the early morning he fell asleep and was having a bad dream when a shout woke him up. A ship, The Good Hope, came up and he climbed onto it and thanked the captain. The captain told him that John had been picked up by another ship and the ship’s captain had sent out a message.

“Without the message, I would not have found you on the buoy,” he said.

43. Why didn’t Mark and Dan go sailing together?

    A. Mark was in some other place. B. Dan was in some other place.

    C. Mark would like to go with John. D. Dan asked his brother to go instead.

44. Why did John and Mark become separated?

    A. John had to stay in the boat to call for help.

    B. John couldn’t control the boat and drifted away.

    C. There wasn’t room for both John and Mark on the buoy.

    D. Mark thought it safe to stay on the buoy but John didn’t.

45. What made it possible for Mark to be found on the buoy?

    A. John told people where to look for him.   B. The captain saw him as the fog cleared.

    C. John radioed to the Good Hope to get him.  D. He shouted when saw the Good Hope.
