Different gestures mean different things in different countries. Sometimes a gesture that is polite in one country is not polite in another and should not be used. The different meanings of gestures can also cause problems in understanding what another person wants or is trying to say. In Thailand, for example, if you want someone to come towards you, you hold out a hand, palm downwards, and move all the fingers backwards and forwards. In most Western countries, however, you show another person that you want him or her to come towards you by holding out a hand, palm upwards, and moving the first finger only backwards and forwards.
A gesture that many people do not understand uses the thumb. Most Westerners will sometimes show that they like something by holding out a hand with the thumb sticking up in the air. This is called giving someone or something the “thumbs up”. However, only one thumb is used, so it should really be “thumb up”.
The usual explanation of this gesture is not really correct. It states that Roman times when people at a circus were pleased with the way a gladiator(角斗士) had fought, they showed the emperor that they were pleased by giving the “thumbs up” signal. When they were not pleased they gave the “thumbs down” gesture. When a gladiator was given the “thumbs up”, the emperor allowed him to live. When a gladiator was given the thumbs down”, the emperor ordered him to be killed.
This explanation is not correct. The error is caused by a wrong translation from the Latin words police verso. This means turned thumb” It does not say which way the thumb is turned—up or down. People thought that up meant “life” and down meant “death”. In fact, the gesture used by spectators(观众) to save a gladiator’s life was called the “compressed thumb”. In this gesture the spectator actually hid their thumbs in their hands so that there would be no mistake which way they were pointing. When the spectators pointed their thumbs towards the gladiator, they probably meant the gladiator should be killed. When they did not show their thumbs at all, they probably meant that he should be allowed to live.
61. The story is mainly about _______.
A. the “thumbs up” gesture B. gestures around the world
C. gladiators in Ancient Rome D. circuses now and then
62. If you want someone to come to you in Thailand, you _____.
A. use the “thumbs down” gesture B. point your thumb at them
C. hold out your hand, palm down and move your fingers

63. When the Westerners stick up their thumb, they_____.
A. agree to let someone die B. like something
C. want someone to die D. want to go to a circus.
64. Most people think the “thumbs up” gesture meant _____.
A. the Romans were not pleased B. the circus could continue
C. the emperor wanted the gladiator to live
D. spectators wanted the gladiator to live
65. If the spectators wanted the gladiator to live, they ________
A. hid their thumbs B. stuck their thumbs up

One of the most detailed descriptions of UFO was given by nine-year-old Gaynor Sunderland in July 1976. Gaynor lived in Oakenholt, a village in North Wales. On her way home from school, she saw a silver object shaped like a saucer(茶碟) in a field not far from her home.
The strange craft was about 30 feet long and 9 feet high. It had yellow windows along the side and on the top there was a light flashing in a kind of box.
Although Gaynor was very frightened, she did not run away. Instead, she lay quietly in the long grass and watched the door of the strange craft open. She saw two people wearing silver suits come out of the craft. They were carrying some kind of equipment which they used to examine the ground. They were short and had large pink eyes, Gaynor reported
After about half an hour, the two people went back into the craft. At once there was a loud noise and the UFO took off.

Every year there are hundreds of earthquakes in different parts of the world. In Sept. 1923, Tokyo and Yokohama were both destroyed by an earthquake and the fires that followed it. They had to be completely rebuilt. One of the most serious earthquakes was in China's Shanxi province in 1556. It killed almost one million people.
We measure an earthquake's strength on the Richter Scale. The Richter Scale was introduced in 1935 in Southern California in the USA. It measures earthquakes on a scale of one to ten. Any earthquake measuring five or more is usually serious.
The Earth's crust(地壳)is made up of layers of rock called plates. As these plates move, they sometimes crash against each other, causing the crust to quake. In cities such as Tokyo, where small quakes occur quite often, many modern buildings are designed to be flexible so when the Earth moves, they move with it.
Earthquakes can also break up gas and oil pipes. This can cause fires to break out, which can do as much damage as the earthquake itself.
Another effect of earthquakes is tsunamis(海啸). These are huge waves created by earthquakes beneath the sea. They can be many meters high and cause great damage to coastal towns and cities.
China, Japan, Russia and the United States have the highest occurrence of earthquakes in the world.

The Eiffel Tower is one of Europe's most famous buildings. It stands in the Champ de Mars, a park near the River Seine in Paris. It is 300 meters tall and was built by Alexandre Gustave Eiffel for the Paris Universal Exposition in 1889, or" expos" as we now call them, and these " expos" are places where people can see new inventions, new kinds of art, and new kinds of food.
Because the tower was such a tall building, Eiffel wanted to make it easy for people to get to the top. He wanted to use an elevator, which was a very new invention at the time. Eiffel asked Elisha Otis to design an elevator to the first and second platforms of the building. Unfortunately, the French government did not like the first design that Otis showed them, and they world not let him put the elevator in. By early 1889, the first visitors had to climb hundreds of stairs to get on the first and second platforms of the tower.
The Eiffel Tower cost over a million US dollars ——a lot of money at that time. People who invested in the building were worried that they would not get their money back. However, in the first year they got much more than their money back. Thousands of tickets were sold to people who wanted to go up and look at the view from the top.
The opening of the Eiffel Tower took place on 10 June 1889. Eiffel himself lived in the tower where he had his own apartment. Many kings and queens visited the tower during the opening and, of course, they visited Eiffel's apartment. Although Eiffel designed the tower for people to visit, it was also used for scientific experiments. Nowadays, the tower gets twice as many visitors as the other very famous building in Paris ——the Louver.
The Writer Oscar Wilde said that he liked the Eiffel Tower because it was the only place in Paris from which he could not see the Eiffel Tower!

One possible version:
Dear Mr. Principal,
I am a senior student of our school. I'd like to say something about the canteen service in our school.
In general, the service is satisfactory. The hall is clean and tidy. The dishes look inviting and taste delicious as well. What's more, the workers there treat us as their friends, which makes us feel very happy.
However, we feel the price of the meals is a little too high, Besides, we can only have a limited variety of dishes with little change every week. In addition, we often have to stand in line for a long time before we can get the meal. You could understand how precious time is to us students. Therefore, may I suggest something be done to solve the problems so that we can all enjoy our meals at school?
Thanks for your consideration.
Sincerely yours,
Li Hua
