I once worked as a night guard in a factory. It was rather a lonely job, but I did have a big dog to look after me.
All I had to do was to walk round the factory every hour, though there was a clever system of clocks and keys which recorded when I visited each part of the place. Otherwise, I read, listened to the radio or played with the dog.
One wet night, however, all the fire and burglar alarms in the place went off at once. I rushed out, but couldn’t see anything. The alarms were directly linked to the police and fire station, and within three minutes four fire engines and as many police cars were gathering at the front gate to be let in.
They looked all round the factory, but didn’t find anything either. The firemen told me that the rain must have leaked(渗) into the alarm system and caused a short circuit(短路).

All around the world, people drink tea. But tea does not mean the same thing to everyone. In different countries people have very different ideas about drinking tea.
In China, for example, tea is always served when people get together. The Chinese drink it at any time of the day at homes or in teahouses. They prefer their tea plain, with nothing in it.
Tea is also important in Japan. The Japanese have a special way of serving tea called a tea ceremony(仪式). It is very old and full of meaning. Everything must be done in a special way in the ceremony. There is even a special room for it in Japanese homes.
Another tea-drinking country is England. In England, the late afternoon is “teatime”. Almost everyone has a cup of tea then. The English usually make tea in a teapot and drink it with milk and sugar. They also eat cakes, cookies and little sandwiches at teatime.
In the United States people drink tea mostly for breakfast or after meals. Americans usually use tea bags to make their tea. Tea bags are faster and easier than making tea in teapots. In summer, many Americans drink cold tea – “iced tea”. Sometimes they drink iced tea from cans, like soda.

Dear Ellen,
I have never written a letter to a newspaper before. I have just never felt the need to do such a thing. I have always felt I was quite able to do everything by myself. But now I have to say I was wrong. Sometimes you really need help in this life, I guess. And that’s why I’m writing this letter to you.
I have a happy family. I love my children and they love me. I’m the mother of three children. I know well how to bring up children, and two of them are already over twenty, so it is nothing new for me. But now I have a serious problem: the telephone problem. My son’s just seventeen, and I feel he should do lots of homework right now, but he doesn’t seem to be interested in it. He can happily spend three or four hours at a time on the phone every day, and say nothing important. And he sees red if you ask him to put down the phone. But Ellen, my husband is a doctor and his patients can’t call him. My eldest son works for a newspaper. He needs to use the telephone, too. And as you know, we just can’t pay for it.
What can I do? And don’t tell me to talk to him. We’ve tried and it doesn’t work. But this is really a big problem in your life. I have tried everything I can think of. You’re my last hope. Please tell me what I can do.
Yours,
Ann Green

For several years, Americans have enjoyed teleshopping – watching TV and buying things by phone. Now teleshopping is starting in Europe(欧洲). In a number of European countries, people can turn on their TVs and shop for clothes, jewelry, food, toys, and many other things.
Teleshopping is becoming popular in Sweden, for example. The biggest Swedish company sells different kinds of things on TV in 15 European countries, and in one year it made $100 million. In France there are two teleshopping channels, and the French spend about $20 million a year to buy things through those channels.
In Germany, until last year teleshopping was only possible on one channel for 1 hour every day. Then the government allowed more teleshopping. Other channels can open for telebusiness, including the largest American teleshopping company and a 24-hour teleshopping company. German businesses are hoping this new teleshopping will help them sell more things.
Some people like teleshopping because it allows them to do their shopping without leaving their homes. With all the problems of traffic in the cities, this is an important reason. But at the same time, other European do not like this new way of shopping. They call teleshopping “junk(垃圾) on the air”. Many Europeans usually worry about the quality(质量) of the things for sale on TV. Good quality is important to them, and they believe they cannot be sure about the quality of the things on TV.
The need for high quality means that European teleshopping companies will have to be different from the American companies. They will have to be more careful about the quality of the things they sell. They will also have to work harder to sell things that the buyers cannot touch or see in person.
71. Teleshopping is ______ in Europe.

D. think the things sold on TV are of bad quality
74. In Germany, teleshopping may ______.

C. have fewer buyers D. bring better TV programs
75. The best title of this passage is ______.
