III. 阅读理解(共20小题;每小题1.5分,满分30分)

(A)

To learn English well you must learn about yourself. You must discover what your own special needs are in English. You should pick out what makes English different from your own language and concentrate on those parts. And above all, you should pick out your own personal weaknesses in English, pick out your own special problems, find out what mistakes you most often make and make a list of them.

It will be best if, in your preparation, you can practise doing the various sorts of work you will be asked to do in examination. You should then make a careful note of any mistakes you make more than once. Count up how many times you make each mistake, and the mistake you make most often should be at the top of your list, the next most common in second place, and so on.

For example, if your own language is Japanese, you may find the problem of articles comes at the top of your list. If you speak German, you may find using some of the conjunctions is your biggest problem. If your mother tongue is French, you may find you are always having trouble with some prepositions. And if Italian is your language, you may constantly forget to use a suitable pronoun when you should.

But these are only examples of mistakes typical of certain languages. They may or may not be your particular personal mistakes. As I say, these personal ones are the most important of all to discover.

56. To learn English well the most important thing is to _______________.

  A. learn from yourself as much as possible

58. To make a list of personal mistakes_________________.

  A. is a must for any English learner B. is a time-consuming job

A strange woman comes to my door one day in early March. In this area we often have people selling things door-to-door, but she doesn’t look like a professional saleswoman. She just smiles and gives a card to me: “Amy Turner.”

I hold the card and look at her, waiting for an explanation.

“I’ll paint any animal in your own home,” Amy Turner says. “Wouldn’t you like a picture of your loved one? I’ve had experience of dogs, cats, parrots, prize bulls…”

“I don’t have any animals,” I say as we look past each other. She must be wishing some little cat or dog would come down the hall. It is the first chance I’ve had to breathe the air outside. In this spring morning when you wake up, you will find winter is gone.

“Why are you still in your dressing gown?” She asks. “It’s nearly lunchtime. Are you ill?’

“I’m fine,” I lie. I’m not going to tell a stranger I’ve just been sick in the toilet upstairs. I was still sticking my fingers down my throat if the doorbell hadn’t rung. But now I’m not sure what to do next. She is still standing there. She doesn’t seem to be leaving.

“I’m hungry,” she says and I smile politely, nodding my head before saying goodbye.

“No,” she puts her foot in the door. “I’m really hungry. I’ve had nothing to eat for two days and no one has any animal for me to paint. I need some food or I’ll fall down, right here on your doorstep.”

In spite of all stories of prosperity(繁荣)in United States, not only does poverty (贫穷) exist there, but crimes of various types have been increasing at an alarming rate.

Most types of serious crime increased from 363.5 in every 100,000 people in 1970 to 535.5 in 1979. In that one year, there was one murder (谋杀) committed in every 24 minutes, one case of robbery (抢掠) in every 10 minutes and one case of rape in every 7 minutes. The cause of murder involved a number of 21,456 victims (受害人). Most acts of violence (暴力) were committed by young people. 57% of the criminals arrested in 1979 were youths 25 of age.

Everyone agrees that crime is partly a result of bad material conditions: poverty, lack of education, living without a settled home, being parentless, sufferings from other kinds of misfortune, etc.

There are also other factors (因素) than material conditions which are responsible for the sharp increase of crime rate. In the first place, some state laws provide for a death penalty (处罚) but some not. Secondly, the Constitution (宪法) allows every citizen to carry for weapons for his own protection. It is therefore possible and easy for anyone in the country to get a gun. Finally, there has been too much shown on TV and too much reported in newspaper of all kinds of crime, the details of which are so accurately (精确地) described that even children know how to duplicate (复制) what they have seen or read. All these have resulted in (导致) a higher frequency (频率) of crimes committed both by professional ones in murder, drug smuggling (走私), robbery, pocket-picking, etc.

A Nobel Prize is considered by most people one of the highest international honors a person can receive. As you know, the prizes were started by a Swede called Alfred Nobel. Alfred was born in Stockholm, the capital of Sweden.

Alfred Nobel was a chemist and inventor. He made two important inventions, and so he became very rich. Although he was rich, Nobel was not a happy man. He never married or had children. Also, he was a sick man a large part of his life. Nobel died at the age of sixty-three. When he died, he left a fund of $ 9 000 000. The money was to be used in giving prizes to those who made outstanding achievements in physics, chemistry, medicine, literature and the promotion of world peace.

The first Nobel Prizes were given on December 10,1901, five years after Nobel’s death. Many famous people from all over the world have been given Nobel Prizes for their achievements. Albert Einstein was one of them. Each prize has three parts. The first part is a gold medal. Second, a winner of Nobel Prize is given a diploma saying that he has been given the prize. The third part of the prize is a large amount of money, about $40 000.

Often a prize is given to just one person, but not always. Sometimes a prize is shared. It may be given to two or more people who have worked together. It is also sometimes true that a prize is not given at all if there is no outstanding achievement. In 1972, for example, no Nobel Prize was given.
