Many people think that the most popular way of communicating with other people is through the mouth. But what they don’t know is that actual communication using the mouth accounts for only around 10% (or even less) of all the means to communicate a message.

Moreover, you can never determine the truthfulness or honesty of people by what they say alone. In fact, words expressed through the mouth often do not reflect what people really think or feel. The more reliable way you can determine their true inner feelings and thoughts is by reading their body language. Everybody communicates using these gestures and if you understand the gestures and their meanings you will be able to read people and know what they are really communicating to you. One researcher even went as far as to say that we speak to hide what’s on our minds. But gestures cannot lie.

Have you ever wondered what it would be like if you can “see through” the emotions of other people? Let’s say you ask a person whether he can do an important task. He says “OK”. But deep inside, you are questioning yourself, “Is he really willing to do this job?” or “Does he have the confidence in finishing this task?” You can’t question him directly because that would be like belittling him. And even if you ask him those questions, his replies will not tell you what he really feels or thinks. So the most useful way is to observe his body language. Expressions like smiling, frowning, pouting, facial reddening, sweating, toe curling and sideways glances are visible hints that can help you make a right judgment.

56. According to the passage, we know _______.

A. words through the mouth are the most common way in communication

B. body language is the quickest way to help people understand each other

C. expressions are the most powerful tool to judge whether a man is confident or not

D. you may know what a person really thinks with the help of reading his body language

57. What does the underlined sentence mean in the second paragraph?

A.    We can express ourselves well by body language.

B.    We use words to prevent others knowing our true thoughts

C.    Spoken words can fully reflect our true self.

D. We use body language to help express ourselves.

58. The underlined word in the third paragraph can be replaced with ______.

A. looking down upon B. speaking highly of

C. laughing at          D. believing in

B

We all long for friendship, but how to grow a friend? The best time to grow a best friend is before you need one!” Joy Steven said. Here is an eight-step program for you.

People equal friends. Friends usually begin with strangers. Contact with other people is the first building block to grow a friend. Friends can’t grow in empty air. Best friends take time.

Friends understand friends. Friends understand each other when talking. Many unpleasant quarrels in your personal relationship can be avoided if you will take the time to understand other’s feelings and points of view.

Friends touch friends. Touching is a warm form of communication between friends. When you see best friends communicating, you will notice friends stand close together, touch each other comfortably and listen to each other attentively. Sometimes a caressing touch is more powerful than words.

Friends praise friends. Affirmation(肯定) is a powerful tool for growing a friend. Honest praise can affect your friends’ lives. So try to praise your friends, including your general ones.

Friends are loyal and trustworthy. Trust and loyalty go hand-in-hand for friends. Friends can share secrets with you, because good friends never break a confidence and are forever loyal.

Friends express their feelings. We feel closest to our friends when we are suffering together, when we feel our friends need us or when we feel a friend has shared something of great importance with us.

Friends do not penetrate the other. The person who thinks, “If you really like me, you can read my mind” cannot have a mature friendship. No person can read others’ mind. Please make space for your friends.

Talking is important among friends. In a mutually(共有的) satisfying friendship, both friends talk and listen. Friends talk appropriately to each other.

Humans are the only creatures on the earth that eat cooked food. Besides trained animals, all other creatures eat raw and unprocessed food.

According to the saying, you are what you eat. Now some experts think that it could be our cooking skills that raised Homo sapiens(智人) above the other apes. It is believed that human beings may have been developed by an ape learning to cook.

Two million years ago, early humans came from a group of pre-human apes. We began to go through important changes. We managed to get full movement on our two feet and a larger brain. One and a half million years ago, our ancestors had learned to cook food.

Burnt bones found on the fossils(化石) have uncovered this change related to cookery. Scientists guess that when our ancestors began their meat it probably doubled the quantity of heat in their bodies.

Cooked food is easier to digest(消化), safer to store, and is the most effective way of introducing complex proteins into early humans’ diet. This was an important factor for developing Homo sapiens’ growing mental power, with modern humans finally appearing 100,000 years ago.

Cooking would have opened up a great number of new foods to our hungry ancestors. Poisonous and uneatable roots became suitable for eating when baked. Tough parts of hunted animals became tender food.

Over time, our method of heating food was improving itself. From open fires to modern cooking equipment, ways of cooking are improving and the taste of food is more and more delicious.

62. What is the main idea of this passage?

A. Only humans eat cooked food.

B. Cooking helped a lot in humans’ evolution.

C. Cooked food improved humans’ health.

D. Without cooking, without evolution.

63. It took early humans ______ million years to learn to cook.

A. 0.5 B. 1 C. 1.5     D. 2

64. According to the passage, we may infer that ______.

A. two million years ago, early humans learned how to cook

B. Homo sapiens probably cooked food on open fires

C. early humans might gain more heat by eating meat

D. cooked food helped develop Homo sapiens’ minds

65. According to the passage, which of the following statements is NOT true?

A. Nearly all the animals on the earth eat uncooked food.

Ways of Communication

Communication is becoming more and more important in our daily life. There are mainly three ways of communication — mail, telephone and computer.

Writing letters or e-mails is one way for us to keep in touch with one another. People often use written words to exchange ideas and thoughts. The second type is the telephone or mobile phones. By telephone or mobile phone, people can hear each other even if they are far away. Nowadays the computer has been widely used. Communication with computers is not only fast and easy but also convenient for people to exchange useful information.

In a word, the ways of communication are improving all the time.
