How Do People Plan Their Life?

The story of King Midas is not true. No man could really touch the things around him and make them turn to gold. It could be wonderful if we could turn things into gold as in the story. But the “magic touch”, the life without work is seldom part of life in an everyday world.

It costs money to do the things you want to do and to buy the things you want to buy. In order to give a present for a birthday you must first earn the money before you have any to spend. Your home, your food, and your clothes are basic needs. Everyone needs these three things. Many other things we want are really luxuries. Basic needs and luxuries together form our standard ( 标准) of living. Many of the things we feel we “need” in our homes would be regarded as luxuries to other people in other parts of the world.

Have you ever helped plan a family budget (预算 ). If you know you have to balance the whole money the family have earned, you should pay for gas, electricity, water and your house. You should also plan for holidays and other special uses. At the same time you should have some of your money to be saved.

How people earn their money and how they spend their money is an important aspect of the study of economics.

The money for the space program of the United States has been questioned by some people. There are suggestions that the money could be better spent elsewhere. Some people believe that the Apollo to the moon could have been better and more cheaply done by robots. Their arguments may have some value. It is true, however, that never in history was mankind so united or so focused on one event as when Neil A. Armstrong climbed down a ladder from the Apollo and stepped onto the moon. The effect of feelings of this event is something to be considered when we look at the space program. President Nixon spoke these words to the astronauts, “… all the people on this earth are truly one — one in the pride in what you have done ….” “We came in peace of all mankind.” These words give noble ideas that we on earth must try to achieve in our daily lives. Perhaps the writer Archibald Macleish made the best comment as to what the moon flight — Apollo might mean for all mankind. He wrote that to see the earth as it truly is, small and beautiful, to see ourselves as brothers, brothers who know they are truly brothers.

 53. The writer believes that _____.

   A. the space program is worthless

   B. President Nixon made the best comment about the Apollo

   C. The effect of feelings of the event of the moon landing is important in judging its cost

   D. Archibald Macleish is a great writer

 54. The writer suggests that _____.

A. the space flight should be questioned

B. all the people on the earth watch TV

C. the moon flight may help us to see ourselves as brothers

D. the astronauts came in peace

 55. The word “elsewhere” in the passage means _____.

Dear Tom,

How nice to hear from you again. You want to know what is going on in our school. In short, things have been improving since the school began to carry on exploring study.

In the past, the teachers always kept on explaining the points in class. We students just listened and took notes. But now we often discuss and try to solve the problems raised by the teachers or ourselves. After class, we enjoy different kinds of activities instead of doing endless homework. For example, we can read what we are interested in. We can go to the library or surf the Internet for various kinds of information.

In a word, we are now masters of study, and we are very happy.

Best wishes.

                         Yours,

                         Li Hua
