Friends play an important part in our lives, and although we may take the friendship for granted, we often don't clearly understand how we make friends. While we get on well with a number of people, we are usually friends with only a few¡ªfor example, the average among students is about 6 per person. In all the cases of friendly relationships, two people like one another and enjoy being together, but beyond that, the degree of intimacy(Ç×ÃÜ) between them and the reasons for their shared interest change greatly. As we get to know people we consider things like age, race, economic conditions, social positions and intelligence. Although these reasons are of prime importance, it is more difficult to get on with people when there is a great difference in age and background. ª¥

Some friendly relationships can be kept on argument and discussion, but it is usual for close friends to have similar ideas and beliefs, to have opinions and interests in common¡ªthey often talk about ¡°being on the same wavelength(²¨³¤)¡±. It generally takes time to reach this point. And the more intimate(Ç×ÃܵÄ) people become, the more they depend on one another. People want to do friends favors and hate to break a promise. Equally, friends have to learn to put up with bad habits and to accept differences of opinion. ª¥

Unlike marriage, there are no friendship ceremonies to strengthen the relation between two people. But the supporting and understanding of each other that result from shared experiences and feelings do seem to form a powerful link, which can overcome differences in background, and break down barriers of age, class or race. ª¤

43. In paragraph two, ¡°being on the same wavelength¡± means¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡. ª¤

A. using the same frequency(ƵÂÊ) while talkingª¤

B. keeping the same friendly relationship as other people doª¤

The problem started when the family moved and Chris switched schools. He made friends with a new set of kids, some of whom used drugs. The first time Chris used cocaine(¿É¿¨Òò) was with friends at Larry's house. Everyone pooled their money to buy few grams of cocaine. Larry told them, ¡°It's safe as long as you don't use it too often. It won't turn you into an addict(³Éñ«Õß) like other drugs. ¡±ª¥

During the following year, the group tried crack(¼Û¸ñ²»¹óµÄǿЧ´¿¿É¿¨Òò) along with cocaine. Chris bragged(´µÐê), ¡°I can handle this material!¡±ª¥
