Charlotte Perkins Gilman lived from 1860 until 1935. She lived during a time when most women in America and Europe had few educational opportunities. For most of Gilman’s life, women could not even vote(选举). Gilman had many ideas about how to improve women’s lives.
Because she grew up in a family that was not wealthy, Gilman read a lot in order to educate herself. When she was eighteen, however, she attended the Rhode Island School of Design. She worked her way through school by tutoring and teaching.
Gilman finally began publishing books, articles, poems, and even a monthly magazine of her own. She also lectured to large groups. Much of her writing and speaking focused(集中) on allowing women to use their natural talents and intelligence by giving them access(机会或权利) to education and jobs that paid well. They used to call her “the witch（女巫）”, but today I found things were different.
My legs were too short to reach the floor from up there on the big chair. I was so afraid. My legs started to shake.
It was the first time I had been to the principal’s（校长的） office. And I knew what she was going to ask me.

An Internet casino bought the sandwich, saying it had become a “part of pop culture”. Goldenpalace.com says it will take the sandwich on a world tour before selling it and collecting money for charity(慈善团体).
