M: Right, and can you take shorthand?

W: Yes, not very fast, but I can take shorthand .

M: OK, fine. Can you drive a car?

W: No, I’m afraid I can’t.

M: Well, that’s not very important.

W; Is it true that you don’t swim at all now?

M: I’m afraid so. I’m too old.

W: But you’re only twenty.

M: That’s too old for a swimmer. If I swam in an international competition now, I wouldn’t win. So I’d rather not swim at all.

W: But don’t you enjoy swimming?

M: I used to , when I was small. But if you enter for big competitions, you have to work very hard.I used to get up at 6 am to go to the pool. I had to swim before school, after school and on weekends. I swam thirty- five miles every week.

W: But you were famous at fifteen. And look at al those cups!

M: Would you like to polish them? It’s true that I have some wonderful memories. I enjoyed visiting other countries, and the Olympics were very exciting. But I missed more important things. While other boys were growing up, I was swimming.

Dear Joan,

Hello! I’ m glad to send you an e-mail to tell you that I ‘m getting more and more interested in English.

However, in the past I thought learning English meant learning grammar rules and words by heart. I didn’t like to read or speak English , nor was I willing to practice dialogues with my classmates.

Now with my English teacher’s help, I came to realize we learn to speak English by speaking as we learn to sing by singing. I began to enjoy speaking English and communicate with my classmates. I often read some fresh English news or articles and look up some information on the internet. As a result, I have made great progress in English.

                              Yours sincerely,

                                  Amy
