Most animals have little connection with animals of a different kind unless they hunt them for food. Sometimes, however, two kinds of animals come together in a partnership(伙伴关系) which does good to both of them. You may have noticed some birds sitting on the backs of sheep. This is not because they want a ride, but because they find easy food in the parasites(寄生虫) on sheep. The sheep allow the birds to do so because they remove the cause of discomfort (不舒适). So although they can manage without each other, they do better together.

Sometimes an animal has a plant partner. The relationship develops because the two partners cannot manage without each other. This is so in the corals (珊瑚) of the sea. In their skins they have tiny plants which act as “dustman”, taking some of the waste products from the coral and giving in return oxygen (氧气) which the animal needs to breathe. If the plants are killed, or are even prevented from light so that they cannot live normally, the corals will die.

60. Some birds like to sit on a sheep because _____.

  A. they depend on the sheep for existence

B. they enjoy traveling with the sheep

C. they can eat its parasites

D. they find it most comfortable to sit on the sheep’s back

61. The underlined word “they” in the sentence of the first paragraph refers to “_______”.

  A. birds and parasites B. birds and sheep

  C. parasites and sheep D. sheep, birds and parasites

62. It can be learnt from the passage that the coral depends on the plant for _____.

  A. comfort B. light C. food D. oxygen

63. What does the second paragraph mainly discuss?

  A. Some animals and plants depend on each other for existence.

  B. Some animals and plants develop their relationship easily.

  C. Some plants depend on each other for food.

  D. Some animals live better together.

C

At first all films were in black and white, but in 1932 the first color film was made. This proved as unpopular as talking films had done in the late 1920’s. It was not until 1938 that a full length color film was made, and the success of this film made producers everywhere change from black and white to color. This first full-length color film was translated into ten different languages and made Hollywood the main center of film industry.

In the early days of the cinema, other countries had also film industries. Very good films were made in Sweden, Britain, Russia and France. However, because Hollywood had so much money to spend, it kept its position as the world’s most important film center. Film actors went to America because they knew they could get a lot of money for every film they made. In 1918 Charlie Chaplin received $ 1 million for eight films. This was a huge amount of money in those days, when a worker received only $ 5 each day.

However, life was not always easy for the film actors. Newspapermen followed them everywhere, and after Charlie Chaplin married for the fourth time he became so unpopular with the American public that he had to leave the country and live in Europe.

64. Which of the following is correct?

  A. People liked the color film as soon as it was made.

  B. At first talking films were not popular.

  C. Color films were at first silent.

  D. Talking films were all color films.

  A. America was the only country that made good films.

  B. no other countries had film industries

  C. they could make a lot of money there

  D. they wanted to become famous actors

67. Life was sometimes difficult for film actors because _____.

  A. films often cost huge amount of money to make

  B. they had to leave their countries

  C. sometimes films lose money

  D. they could not get away from newspapermen

D

When we do not understand each other’s language, we can talk with the help of signs.

A Frenchman was once traveling in England. He could not speak English at all. One day, he went into a restaurant and sat down at a table. When the waiter came, he opened his mouth, put his fingers in it and took them out again. He wanted to say, “Bring me something to eat.”

The waiter soon brought him a cup of tea. The man moved his head from side to side. The waiter understood him and took the tea away. In a moment he came with a cup of coffee and put it on the table. The man again refused his offer. He shook his head whenever the waiter brought him something to drink, for drinks are not food.

When the man was going away, another man came in. This man saw the waiter, and he put his hands on his stomach. That was enough. In a few minutes there was a large plate of meat and vegetables on the table in front of him.

So you see, we can understand the language of signs as well as we can understand the language of words.

68. A Frenchman signed to the waiter ______.

  A. to translate B. to tell him what he said

  C. to bring him a cup of tea    D. to ask him for food

  A. he was hungry B. he had had enough

  C. he was very thirsty D. he had a stomachache

71. From this story, we learn _____.

  A. people can only understand the language of words

  B. proper body gestures can help people to understand each other

  C. waiters should understand body language

  D. it is important to learn foreign languages

E

He was last seen climbing over a gate before disappearing over the top of a hill.

The young man, who was about 20 years old, said, “I don’t blame the boy for not asking me my name. Why should he? If he wants to swim in the river, that’s his business. And if I want to help him, that’s mine. You needn’t have my name, either!”
