Computers are very important to modern life. Many people think that in the future computers will be used in lots of everyday life. It is thought that we won’t have to go shopping because we will be able to get most things which are sold in shops on the Internet. There will be no more books because we will be able to get all texts from computers. The Internet will be used to play games, see films and buy food. Some people are glad about those new ways of shopping and communicating. Others do not think that computers will replace our old ways.
Some people think that one day we will not read books made of paper. Instead, we will buy and read books using computers, which will keep many different books in them at the same time. Girls as young as 10 years old are dieting and in danger of developing unhealthy attitudes about weight, body image and food, a group of Toronto researchers reported Tuesday.
Their study of 2, 279 girls aged 10 to 14 showed that while the vast majority had healthy weights, nearly a third felt they were overweight and were trying to lose pounds. Even at the tender ages of 10, nearly 32 per cent of girls felt “too fat’’ and 31 per cent said they were trying to diet.
McVey, a researcher at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, and her colleagues analyzed data collected in a number of surveys of southern Ontario school girls between 1993 and 2003, reporting their findings in Tuesday’s issue of the Canadian Medical Association Journal.
Nearly 80 per cent of the girls had a healthy body weight and only 7.2 per cent were considered overweight using standard weight to height ratios (比率). Most researchers suggest the rate of overweight children in this country is several times higher than that figure.
Nearly 30 per cent of the girls reported they were currently trying to lose weight, though few admitted to dangerous behavior such as self-induced (引起,导致) sickness.
Still, a test that measured attitudes towards eating showed 10.5 per cent of survey participants (参加者) were already at risk of developing an eating disorder.
“We’re not talking about kids who’ve been prescribed (开处方,嘱咐) a diet because they’re above average weight or overweight. We’re talking about children who are within a healthy weight range. And they have taken it upon themselves to diet to lose weight,” McVey said, acknowledging she found the rates disturbing. She said striking a balance between healthy weights and healthy attitudes towards food and body image is a complex task, with no easy solutions.
64. The study showed that most of the girls
A. were overweight. B. were on a diet.
C. had unhealthy attitudes about weight D. had a healthy body weight.
65. The survey participants were girls
A. who were 10. B. who were 14. C. who were 10 to 14. D. who were 10 to 18.
66. What kind of institution does the lead researcher work with?
A. A schoo1. B. A hospital. C. An association. D. A charity.
67. Unhealthy attitudes about weight, body image and food may
A. lead to an eating disorder. B. result from self-induced sickness.
C. make it easier to gain weight. D. bring about greater competition.
D
Dr. Wiseman started the “laugh lab” project in September 2001. It is the largest study of humor. Participants are invited to log on the laugh lab website, give a few personal details, tell their favorite jokes and judge the jokes told by other people.
Their project will last for a year, and the organizers hope to finally discover the world’s funniest joke. But there is also a serious purpose. The researchers want to know what people from different nations and cultures find funny. And they want to find out the differences between male’s and female’s sense of humor. The idea is that if we want to understand each other, we have to find out what makes us laugh.
This is a subject that has long interested psychologists (心理学家) and philosophers (哲学家). Most of the time, people are not completely honest. We do things that society expects us to and say things that help us get what we want. But laughing cannot be controlled. When we laugh, we tell the truth about ourselves.
By December 2001 over 10,000 jokes had been submitted (公认的). This gave the scientists enough evidence to make early conclusions. It seems that men and women do have different senses of humor, for example.
“Our findings show the major differences in the ways in which males and females use humor,” said Dr Wiseman. “Males use humor to appear superior (高傲的,有优越感的) to others, while women are more skilled in languages and prefer word play.”
Researchers also found that there really is such a thing as a national sense of humor. The British enjoy what is usually called “toilet humor”. But the French like their jokes short and sharp, “You’re a high priced lawyer. Will you answer two questions for $ 500?” “Yes. What’s the second question?”
The Germans are famous for not having a sense of humor. But the survey found that German participants were more likely to find submitted jokes funny than any other nationality. Perhaps that proves the point. Is this joke funny? I don’t know, but let’s say yes, just to be safe.
Dr Wiseman and his workmates also submitted jokes created by computer. But none of those who took part in the survey found any of them amusing. Perhaps this is relief (安慰). Computers already seem like they can do everything. But at least they should leave the funny things to us.
68. The scientist started the “laugh lab” project ________.
A. to find the funniest joke in European countries
B. to know what funny people are from different nations and cultures
C. to find out the differences between the male’s and female’s sense of humor
D. to get more personal details about participants
69. The writer gave the examples of the British, the French and the Germans_____.
A. to show that the French people have a better sense of humor
B. to prove the British people have a sense of “toilet humor”
C. to show people from different nations have different senses of humor
D. to prove that the Germans have no sense of humor
70. Which statement is true according to the passage?
A. The jokes by computer are less funny than those by humans.
B. The Germans cannot find the submitted jokes amusing.
C. Males are better at word play compared with women.
D. Females like to use humor to show that they are superior.

Many people believe they are supposed to drink eight glasses of water a day, or about two liters. Why? Because that is what they have been told all their life. But a recent report offers some different advice. Experts suggest people should obey their bodies: they should drink as much water as they feel like drinking.
The report says most healthy people meet their daily needs for liquid by letting thirst be their guide. The report is from the Institute of Medicine, which provides scientific and technical advice to the government and the public. The report contains some general suggestions. It says women should get about 2.7 liters of water daily and men about 3.7 liters. But wait—in each case, that is more than eight glasses.
There is an important difference. The report does not tell people how many glasses of water to drink. In fact, the experts say it may be impossible to know how many glasses are needed to meet these guidelines. This is because the daily water requirement can include the water content in foods.
As you might expect, the Institute of Medicine says people need to drink more water when they are physically active. The same is true of those who live in hot climates. Depending on heat and activity, people could need twice as much water as others do.
All this, however, does not answer one question. No one seems sure why people have the idea that good health requires eight glasses of water daily. It may have started with a misunderstanding. In nineteen-forty-five, the National Academy of Sciences published some guidelines. Its Food and Nutrition Board said a good amount of water for most adults was two-point-five liters daily. This was based on an average of one milliliter for each calorie of food eaten.
But that was only part of what the board said. It also said that most of this amount is contained in prepared foods.
How much water should we drink every day?

书面表达
Recently our local government has decided to take advantage of the historic opportunity to speed up its tourism. Our class had a discussion on the decision.
As is well known, Dongfeng City is famous as “the country of longevity” so surely our longevity culture will draw on more and more Chinese and foreign visitors to sightsee and spend their holidays here. Speeding up the tourism can not only lead to the quick development of local economy but also provide more chances for jobs. Therefore it is necessary to develop the tourism of our city.
However, if tourism grows too quickly, some of us think it may endanger the natural environment and cause serious pollution. What’s more, too many tourists’ crowding in will bring about heavy traffic jams.
Thus we suggest that the government take the problems seriously. Some measures should be taken to protect the environment and improve our urban traffic conditions so that tourism should be developed steadily and efficiently.

In 1923, a major earthquake struck the city. Thousands of people were killed and millions were left homeless as buildings collapsed and fires broke out throughout Tokyo. It took seven years to rebuild the city. During World War II, Tokyo was destroyed once again. As a result of these disasters, there is nothing of old Tokyo remaining in the downtown area.

Housing shortage, pollution, and waste disposal have presented serious challenges to the city, but the government has begun programs to answer them.
