It was five days before Christmas. Holiday music played over the sound system and my co-workers excitedly 16 their plans. "Doing anything special? "they asked me. I shook my head 17 . I was 3 ,000 miles from my family in Hawaii, pursuing my lifelong 18 of becoming a nurse. I attended classes all day, then went straight to my full-time 19 job at night. My weekly plan left me extremely tired and homesick.

I had 20 looked forward to the holidays. But this December I felt unable to go on. In my

prayers(µ»¸æ) I told 21 that I could just get home to see my mum, dad and brothers. I could survive the next two years until I graduated. But 22 ? Rent, textbooks and other expenses left me with no 23 cash. Money to go home? I barely had money to eat. "I'm on my 24 .Cover for me, will you? "asked Maribelle, another waitress, as she passed me 25 her way to the employee' s room. 26 , there' s this guy at Table Five, "she said. "He' s been sitting there for more than an hour, not making any trouble but not 27 anything either." She paused, "It's like he's... 28 somebody".¡¡¡¡

I looked in the corner. 29 enough, there was a slim, pleasantly-looking man 30 in a worn

shirt, and a black baseball cap, just sitting, 31 .I went over, trying to force a smile. "I'm Cory,"I said, "please let me know if you want anything. "

I was turning to walk away 32 the man spoke. He had a soft, low voice, but somehow I

could hear it clear and plain in the 33 restaurant. "I'd like an order of chips," he said, "and a glass of water. "My heart 34 .Chips were the cheapest thing on the menu, which meant I wouldn' t get much of a 35 . But maybe this guy was broke, and I sure know how that felt. So I tried my best to make him feel okay.

Americans are proud of their variety and individuality (¸öÐÔ), yet they love and respect few things more than a uniform, whether it is the uniform of a lift operator or the uniform of a five-star general. Why are uniforms so popular in the United States? Among the arguments for uniforms, one of the first is that in the eyes of most people they look more professional than civilian (°ÙÐÕµÄ) clothes. People have become conditioned to expect higher quality from a man who wears a uniform. The television repairman who wears a uniform is likely to inspire more trust than one who appears in civilian clothes. Faith in the skill of a garage mechanic is increased by a uniform. What easier way is there for a nurse, a policeman, a hairdresser, or a waiter to lose professional identity (Ö°ÒµÉí·Ý) than to step out of uniform? ¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡Uniforms also have many practical good points. They are often more comfortable and more lasting than civilian clothes. Primary among the argument against uniforms is their lack of variety and the loss of individuality experienced by people who must wear them. Though there are many types of uniforms, the wearer of any particular type is generally stuck with it, without change, until retirement. When people look alike, they are likely to think, speak, and act similarly on the job at least. ¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡Uniforms also give rise to some practical problems. Though they are long-lasting, often their initial expense is greater than the cost of civilian clothes. Some uniforms are also expensive to maintain, requiring professional dry cleaning rather than the home laundering possible with many types of civilian clothes. ¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡36. What surprises us is that Americans _______. ¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡ ¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡ A. still judge a man by his clothes ¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡ ¡¡¡¡ B. think highly of uniforms ¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡  C. less prefer wearing civilian clothes ¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡ D. respect a lift operator in uniform ¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡37. I am very surprised when I read about the terrible traffic safety problems connected with schools in our province which have occurred this year. There have been ten traffic accidents in which nine teachers and students were killed and fifteen others were seriously injured. These accidents have caused great harm and distress to the families of the victims.

¡¡¡¡ I am very glad that on January 1,2005, new legislation in the form of a traffic safety act came into effect for us to keep safe.

¡¡¡¡ In my opinion, all people should study the Act carefully and tell others around them about the new traffic rules. When we are on the road, we must obey the rules for the safety of ourselves and other road users.
