“Yes, I’ll be ready at nine in the morning. Goodbye, dear, and thanks again. ”It had not been an easy telephone call for Mrs. Robson to make. Her daughter had been very kind, of course, and had immediately agreed to pick her up and drive her to the station, but Mrs. Robson hated to admit that she needed help. Since her husband had died ten years before, she had prided herself on her independence. She had continued to live in their little house, alone.
On this evening, however, she was standing at the living room window, staring out at the SOLD notice in the small front garden. Her feelings were mixed. Of course, she was sad at the thought of leaving the house, as it was full of so many memories. But at the same time she was looking forward to spending her last years near the sea, back in the little seaside town where she had been born. With the money from the sale of the house, she had bought a little flat there. She turned from the living room window, and looked round at the room. One or two pieces of furniture remained, covered with sheets. All her pictures had been taken from the walls. There was a small fish tank(鱼缸), with two goldfish in it. When asked why, her husband used to say: “It’s nice to have something alive in the room. ”Since he had passed away, she had always kept some goldfish, had always had “something alive in the room. ”
The next morning, as her train was pulling out of the station, Mrs. Robson called to her daughter, “Kate, you won’t forget to collect the goldfish, will you? The children will love them. It’s …”
“I know, ”Kate interrupted gently. “It’s nice to have something alive in the room. ”But in the little house, the two goldfish had stopped their circling. They were floating on the water, in the room with silent walls.

Personal computers and the Internet give people new choices about how to spend their time.

Some may use this freedom to share less time with certain friends or family members, but new technology will also let them stay in closer touch with those they care most about. I know this from my personal experience.

E-mail makes it easy to work at home, where I now spend most weekends and evenings. My working hours aren’t necessarily much shorter than they once were but I spend fewer of them at the office. This lets me share more time with my young daughter than I might have if she’d been born before E-mail became such a practical tool.

The Internet also makes it easy to share thoughts with a group of friends. Say you do something fun—see a great movie perhaps—and there are four or five friends who might want to hear about it. If you call each one, you may be tired of telling the story.

With E-mail, you just write one note about your experience, at your convenience, and address it to all the friends who you think might be interested. They can read your message when they have time, and read only as much as they want to. They can reply at their convenience, and you can read what they have to say at your convenience.

E-mail is also an inexpensive way to stay in close touch with people who live far away. More than a few parents use E-mail to keep in touch, even daily touch, with their children off at college.

We just have to keep in mind that computers and the Internet offer another way of staying in touch. They don’t take the place of any of the old ways.

69. The purpose of this passage is to _____________.

  A. explain how to use the Internet

  B. share the writer’s joy of keeping up with the latest technology

  C. tell the usefulness of the Internet

  D. introduce the basic knowledge about personal computers and the Internet

70. The use of E-mail has made it possible for the writers to ___________.

  A. spend less time working       B. have more time with his child

  C. work at home on all weekends D. work at a speed comfortable to him

71. According to the writer, E-mail has an obvious advantage over the telephone because the former helps one _____________.

A. reach a group of people at one time conveniently

B. keep his communication as personal as possible

C. pass on much more information than the latter

D. get in touch with his friends faster than the latter

72.The best title for this passage is ___________.

   A. Computer: New Technological Advances

B. Internet: New Tool to Maintain Good Friendship

C. Computers Have Made Life Easier

D. Internet: a Convenient Tool for Communication

第二节 简答题(满分6分,共3小题,每题2分)

I believe in my mother. My belief began when I was just a kid, when I dreamed of becoming a doctor.

My mother was a maidservant. Through her work, she observed that successful people spent a lot more time reading than they did watching television. She announced that my brother and I could only watch two to three pre-selected TV programs during the week. In our free time, we had to read two books each from the Detroit Public Library and hand in written book reports to her. She would mark them up with check marks and underlined the important parts. Years later we realized her marks were a trick. My mother was illiterate (文盲的). Although we had no money, between the covers of those books, I could go anywhere, do anything and be anybody.

When I entered high school I was an A-student, but not for long. I wanted the fancy clothes. I wanted to hang about with the guys. I went from being an A-student to a B-student to a C-student, but I didn’t care. I was cool.

One night my mother came home from working her multiple jobs and I complained about not having enough Italian knit shirts. She said, “Okay, I’ll give you all the money I make this week by scrubbing floors and  cleaning bathrooms, and you can buy the family food and pay the bills. With everything left over, you can have all that you want.” I was very pleased with that arrangement but once I got through allocating (分配) money, there was nothing left. I realized my mother was a financial genius to be able to keep a roof over our heads and any kind of food on the table, much less buy clothes. I also realized that immediate satisfaction wasn’t going to get me anywhere. Success required intellectual preparation. I went back to my studies and became an A-student again, and eventually I fulfilled my dream and became a doctor.

73. Find in the passage a word closest in meaning to the underlined word “guy

74. Why did the mother make the writer and his brother read book and hand in to her their book reports? (回答词数不超过8个词)

75. How did the writer succeed in the end? 回答词数不超过6个词)

It is interesting to know what people of different nations like to do best.

In France, when a woman enters a café or restaurant, she is freely discussed, not only about her appearance but about her past and future as well. She invites looks in the street whether she is beautiful or plain. There is no better way for a woman to get back herself-confidence than a walk in the streets of Paris or Marseilles, and women really like that.

In Italy, people love talking. They sit about in cafes, exchanging news and discussing politics. They do not hesitate to ask questions about the family, income and private life of anybody who happens to be there.

The Swiss eat as a pastime, ladies walk into a teashop, eat a couple of ice creams and a large piece of chocolate cake, and then leave, complaining about their weight.

For the Americans, the greatest fondness is said to be the push of buttons. You push a button in the lift, you push a button for cigarette, chewing gums, stamps, even for a life insurance. You can even push a button to get married and another button to get divorced.

In England, waiting in a line is national passion. The English will form a line whether they have the opportunity. Long queues can be seen, for example, at stations when the train is practically empty and everybody can have a seat.
