第三节、阅读理解(共20 小题, 每小题2分,满分40分)
A
Good health is the most valuable thing in the world. When you’ve got it, you never think about it. When you haven’t got it, you think about it all the time. Our biggest enemies are not terrible diseases and so on. We are our own biggest enemies because we sometimes destroy our own good health. Some of us eat too much, drink too much and smoke too much. And though our reason tells us we should control ourselves, we find it difficult. The fact is that most human beings need stimulation(刺激). Who doesn’t enjoy a drink after a busy day? Only a smoker knows the pleasure of a cigarette with a cup of coffee.
The danger is when these innocent pleasures run our lives and so destroy our health. When you find yourself eating between meals or eating too much rich food, when you can only keep yourself going by taking frequent(频繁的) drinks or by smoking one cigarette after another, then it’s time to stop and think what you might be doing to yourself. The funny thing is that when we don’t control ourselves, simple pleasures are no longer simple pleasures.
All right, I know what you’re thinking. You’re probably saying, “It’s easy to say, but I can’t help myself. I need that extra bit of food, that extra drink, that extra cigarette. Life has so many pleasures that I can’t do without them.” But I’m saying you can help yourself. Not only that, you must help yourself. Because if you don’t help yourself, no one else can. So be your own best friend.
56. The underlined word “innocent”(in Paragraph 2) means ________.
A. not having done something wrong B. exciting or cheering
C. not having much experience D. not expected to cause harm

A. terrible diseases and so on
B. enjoying pleasures after a busy day
C. the difficulty of controlling ourselves

58. “I can’t help myself” means ____________.
A. I can’t do it myself B. I must ask someone to help
C. I can’t control myself D. Do help me, please

A sense of humor is just one of the many things shared by Alfred and Anthony Melillo, 64-year-old twin brothers from East Haven who made history in February 2002. On Christmas Eve, 1992, Anthony had a heart transplant from a 21-year-old donor. Two days before Valentine’s Day in 2002, Alfred received a 19-year-old heart, marking the first time on record that twin adults each received heart transplants
“I’m 15 minutes older than him, but now I’m younger because of my heart and I’m not going to respect him,” Alfred said with a grin, pointing to his brother while talking to a roomful of reporters, who laughed frequently at their jokes.
While the twins knew that genetics might have played a role in their condition, they recognized that their eating habits might have also contributed to their heart problems. “We’d put half a pound of butter on a steak. I overdid it on all the food that tasted good, so I guess I deserved what I got for not dieting properly.”
The discussion moved to Anthony’s recovery. In the five years since his heart transplant, he had been on an exercise program where he regularly rode a bicycle for five miles, swam each day, and walked a couple of miles. He was still on medication, but not nearly as much as Alfred, who was just in the early stage of his recovery.
“Right now I feel pretty young and I’m doing very well,” Anthony said. “I feel like a new person.”
Alfred said his goal, of course, was to feel even better than his brother. But, he added, “I love my brother very much. We’re very close and I’m sure we’ll do just fine.”
59. This article is mainly about _________.
A. the danger of heart transplant surgery B. becoming young by getting a new heart
C. the effect of genetics on the heart D. the twin brothers who received heart transplants
60. What did Alfred and Anthony have in common?

61..What did Alfred and Anthony think caused their heart problems?
A. Exercise. B. Diet. C. Surgery. D. Medicines.
62. Why did Alfred say, “I’m 15 minutes older than him, but now I’m younger because of my heart”?
A. His heart transplant surgery was more successful than Anthony’s.
B. His recovery from the heart surgery was faster than Anthony’s.
C. His exercise program was better than Anthony’s.
D. His new heart was younger than Anthony’s.
C
The goals of public health are to prevent human disease, injury, and disability; protect people from environmental health hazards; promote behaviors that lead to good physical and mental health; educate the public about health; and assure availability of high-quality health services.
Public health systems vary in different parts of the world, depending upon the prevalent health problems in the developing world, where sanitation(卫生)problems and limited medical resources persist, infectious disease are the most significant threat to public health. Public health officials devote resources to establish sanitation systems and immunization programs to curb the spread of infectious diseases, and provide routine medical care to rural and isolated populations. In industrialized nations, sanitary food and water supplies and excellent medical resources have reduced rates of infectious disease. Instead, accidents and diseases such as lung cancer, heart attacks, and strokes are among the leading causes of death. In these areas, public health goals include education programs to teach people how to prevent accidents and lesson their risk for disease, and the maintenance of the excellent disease prevention systems already established.
Public health workers may engage in activities outside the scope of ordinary medical practice.
These include inspecting and licensing restaurants; checking the safety of housing, water, and food supplies. In assuring overall community health, public health officials also act as advocates(倡导者)for laws and regulations—such as during licensing or product labeling requirements.
Most people think of public health workers as physicians and nurses, but a wide variety of other professionals work in public health, including sanitary engineers, microbiologists, laboratory technicians, statisticians, economists, administrators.
63..The underlined word“curb”in the second paragraph means_______.
A. expend B. control C. save D. collect

Empty Deserts
In the 19th century Americans from the eastern states moved out west to settle in the rich new lands along the Pacific coast. The most difficult part of their trip was crossing the “Great American Desert in the western part of the United States by horse and wagon.
The western desert can be very dangerous. There is little water and there are few trees. But the desert also has scenery of great beauty. Tall towers of red and yellow stone rise sharply from the flat sandy valley floor. The scene has been photographed many times and appears in movies and in TV.
In Arizona, man made dams across the Colorado River have made two large lakes in the middle of the dry desert country. At Lake Powell, the red stone arch of Rainbow Bridge rises high above the blue lake.
There are few roads. Many areas of Lake Powell’s shore can only be reached by boat or on foot. But hikers in this empty desert land sometimes find very old native American pictures, painted on the rocks.
In Death Valley, California, the summer temperature rises to 130 degrees. There is less than two inches of rain each year. Death Valley is the lowest place in America---- 925 meters below sea level. In the 1800s, many travelers died when they tried to cross this waterless valley in the terrible heat.
Although the desert is dry and seems empty, there is plenty of life if you look closely. Small insects, snakes and rats have learned how to live in the desert heat. They live under ground and come out at night, when it is cool. Plants such as cacti need very little water. When it does rain in the desert (sometimes only once or twice a year), plants grow quickly, and flowers open in a single day. For a short time, the desert is covered with brilliant colors.
67.In the 19th century, Americans moved from the east to the west because they ______.
A. enjoy the trip B. wanted to make their home there
C. wanted to find new grassland there D. had no water to drink
68.From the passage, we can conclude that ______.
A. the western desert is a good place for people to live in
B. there is little water but there are many trees in the desert
C. the desert is dangerous but it is full of life
D. till now, people know little about the desert
69.If you want to find some old native American pictures painted on the rock you must go ______.
A. on foot B. by boat C. by car D. by plane
70.In the 1800s many travelers died in Death Valley because of ______.
A. illness B. high temperature
C. cold weather D. poisonous water
71.In the desert, animals will die ______.
A. if they move about B. if they cannot make holes underground

Dear Bob,
It's very kind of you to write me and let me know about your beautiful city.
Now I'd like to tell you something about my hometown Daocheng.
The city stands on the bank of the Changjiang River. It is a beautiful place
for people to live in. The air is fresh and the rivers are clean. Its economy
has been developing in the past ten years. New factories, houses and roads have
been built. More schools and hospitals are available for its people. However,
there are still some problems, such as the inconvenience of transportation. And
the industry here is still under development. In my opinion, Daocheng should
develop its economy scientifically. I would also think that the growth of its
population should be brought under control so that we'll have a better hometown
