第三部分:阅读理解(共20小题;每小题2分,满分40分)
A
In Japan’s capital city of Tokyo, earthquake danger limits the height of buildings. The city has spread out so far and the traffic has become so heavy that it is very difficult to go from one place to another. The price of the land, too, has skyrocketed. All these explains why a group of Japanese land developers came to the conclusion(结论) that there was nowhere to go but down. So far they have dug out space underground for fifteen shopping centers.
What are some of the advantages(优势) of shopping and eating underground? Clean air is one of them. The city of Tokyo has one of the most serious smog problems in the world. Another advantage is that you escape the ever—present threat(威胁) of traffic accidents on the city’s busy streets. Still another is the convenience(便利) of getting around : you are usually right next to, or even in, a subway station. And you can even spend the night underground if you like. The Kyobashi station, for example, in downtown Tokyo, has a hotel with a bar, restaurant, and barbershop.
56 The reason why buildings can not be very high in Tokyo is_______.
A. that the information about high buildings is limited in Tokyo
B. that workers haven’t mastered enough modern science and technology
C. the earthquake
D. the heavy traffic
57 What’s the meaning of “skyrocket”? It means “________”.
A. go up sharply B. be as high as that of a rocket
C. fall rapidly D. be as low as that of a rocket
58 What are the advantages of shopping and eating underground?
A. Less air pollution, the convenience of shopping.
B. Less air pollution, the convenience of shopping, and less traffic accidents.
C. Clean air and the convenience of getting around.
D. Clean air, less accidents’ threat, and the convenience of getting around
59 The passage mainly tells us ________.
A. the capital of Japan
B. the land and its limits
C. the use of space underground in Tokyo
D. how to make full use of the land
B
Watch a good teacher, and you will see that he does not sit motionless (不动的) before his students. He stands the whole time he is teaching; he walks about, using his arms, hands and fingers to help him in his explanation, and his face to express feelings. Listen to him, and you will notice the loudness, the quality and musical note of his voice always change according to what he is talking about.
The fact that a good teacher has some of the gifts of a good actor does not mean that he will indeed be able to act well on the stage, but there are very important differences between the teacher’s work and the actor’s.
The actor speaks words he has learned by heart. He has to repeat exactly the same words each time he plays a certain part, even his movements and the ways in which he uses his voice are usually fixed before hand. What he has to do is to make the carefully learned words and actions seem natural on the stage.
A good teacher works in quite a different way. His audience(听众) takes an active part in his play. They ask and answer questions. They obey orders, and if they don’t understand something, they say so. The teacher has to suit his act to the needs of his audience, which is his class. He cannot learn his part by heart, but must invent it as he goes along.
60. Which of the following is the main difference between an actor and a teacher?
A. They have different voices.
B. Teachers are motionless while actors are active.
C. They use different body languages to express feelings.
D. An actor’s words and actions are fixed while a teacher must invent his part as he goes along.

B. uses his face to express feelings

How often one hears children wishing they were grown-ups and old people wishing they were young again. Each age has its pleasures and its pains, and the happiest person is the one who enjoys what each age give him without wasting his time in useless regrets.
Childhood is a time when there are few responsibilities to make life difficult. If a child has good parents, he is fed, looked after and loved, whatever he may do. It is impossible that he will be ever again in his return. What’s more, life is always giving new things to the child-things that have lost their interest for older people because they are too well-known. But a child has his pains: he is not so free to do what he wishes to do; he is repeatedly being told not to do something, or being punished for what he has wrongly done.
When a young man starts to earn his own living, he can no longer expect others to pay for his food, his clothes, and his room, but has to work if he wants to live comfortably. If he spends most of his time playing about in the way that he used to as a child, he will go hungry. And if he breaks the laws of society as he used to break the laws of his parents, he may go to prison. If, however, he works hard, keeps out of trouble and has good health, he can have the great happiness of building up for himself his own position in society.
69. According to Paragraph 2, the writer thinks that _______.
A. life for a child is fairly easy.
B. a child is always loved whatever he does
C. if much is given to a child, he must do something in return
D. only children are interested in life
70. The main idea of the passage is that _______.
- life is not enjoyable since each age has some pains
- young men can have the greatest happiness if they work hard
- childhood is the most enjoyable time in one’s life
- one is the happiest if he can make good use of each age in his life
71. The paragraph following this passage will most probably discuss _______.
- examples of successful young men
- how to build up one’s position in society
- joys and pains of old people
- what to do when one has problems in life
E
As the first report of the accident came in, Burton was sitting in his office on the top floor of the building. Immediately, realizing the seriousness of the whole accident, he moved to a ground floor room with a small waiting-room to look into the matter himself, leaving his second-in-command (副手) to take over all other cases.
He interviewed the first witness (证人) almost at once, making sure that everything that could be done was done to put him at ease. However, the witness was obviously nervous and Burton took great trouble to go over what he said thoroughly(全面地,彻底地), choosing and checking each word carefully and taking the man’s statement down himself. The witness had called the police and he’d waited until the ambulances(救护车) began to arrive, then when the first police car arrived on the scene, he’d been asked to report to the station what he had done.
Burton explained that regrettably it would be necessary for him to go to court because of the serious nature of the disaster (灾难). He could not say more at present. He’d be thankful if the man could keep in touch with the police.
When he had gone, Burton put his head in his hands and considered before asking for the next witness. The man couldn’t be regarded as a hundred percent witness because he had been behind a wall when the explosion happened. But though he was nervous, Burton still thought he was the man worth believing in.
Well, there would be other descriptions and no doubt all these would be put into place and the whole picture would become clear. He raised his head and pressed the bell on his desk.
“Next witness, please,” he said.
72. Why did Burton move to the ground floor when he heard the incident?
- Because the ground floor room had a small waiting-room.
- Because it would be easier for him to interview the witness.
- Because he was not pleased to work on the top floor.
- Because it would be easier for him to talk with the people.
73. How did the witness feel during the interview?
- Obviously somewhat frightened.
- Excited at seeing the incident.
- Anxious to give a report to the police.
- Calm and unhurried.
74. The underlined part “a hundred percent witness” most probably means “________”.
- a patient and talkative person
- a person ready to help others
- the only person who was interviewed in the incident
- a person who watched the whole incident
75. Burton’s final impression of the witness was that _______.
- his report was not clear though he was honest
- he was afraid of being involved (卷入) and refused to tell anything to the police
- his observation(观察) was good but he was not very clear-headed
- he was a dependable and reasonable witness
