Room doctors and medical groups around the world last weekend reacted with strong opposition to the news that an Italian specialist is on the brisk of cloning the first human baby.
Dr. Severino Antinori, who is head of a hospital in Rome, has been referred to in an Arab newspaper claiming that one of his parents is eight weeks pregnant(怀孕) with a cloned baby.
Antinori refused to comment on the reports, but in March 2001 he said he hoped to produce a cloned embryo(胎儿) for implantation with two years. So far seven different kinds of animals have already successfully been cloned, including sheep, cats and most recently rabbits.
Doctors showed their doubt and were strongly opposed although they admitted that human cloning would finally come true unless there was a worldwide ban on the practice.
Professor Rudolf Jaenisch of the Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology said, “I find it astonishing that people do this where the result can be foretold that it will not be a normal baby. It is using humans as guinea pigs(试验品). It makes people feel sick.”
But Ronald Green, director of the Ethics Institute at Darmouth College in the USA, said it is unlikely that an eight-week-old pregnancy would lead to a birth.
So far all cloned animals have suffered from some different serious disorders, many of them dying soon after their birth.
Doctors are opposed to human cloning because they are worried about the welfare of the cloned child if there is one. “There are no benefits of cloned human beings, just harm,” said Dr. Michael Wilks of the U.K.

A quarrel at home may result in you falling ill. Don’t laugh, it’s true. Family matters including living habits and even the way we speak have a big effect on our health, doctors say.
Wang Xiaoyu, a Senior 2 girl from Xichang, Sichuan Province, fainted (晕倒) in class when she heard her classmates quarrel at the top of their voices. Quarrels between her parents also put the girl into a coma. It is because she is suffering from depression (抑郁症), caused by bad relations at home, doctors explained.
“We don’t get sick or stay well by ourselves,” says Dr Robert Ferrer from the US. Ferrer shows that family forces may explain up to a quarter of health problems, in his recent research.
The genes you get from your family may cause illness. If one of your parents has a heart attack, your risk of being affected may double. But effects on health are not only written in our DNA.
Unrelated people who live under the same roof also get similar problems. Diet, lifestyle and environment affect our health, too.
Ferrer’s research also found that if teenagers feel they are ignored or unimportant at home they are more likely to get sick.
We may never fully understand all the effects that families have on our health. But just as individual (个别的) problems can have effects on others, a small improvement can have big benefits, Ferrer said.
55.Which of the following can best explain why Wang Xiaoyu fainted in class?
A. Because her classmates often quarreled in class.
B. Because her parents used to quarrel.
C. Because of her depression caused by bad family relations.
D. Because her classmates shouted loudly at her.
56.According to Dr Ferrer, which of the following statements is TRUE?
A. We get sick or stay well by ourselves.
B. Only the genes we get from our family have a big effect on our health.
C. Our health has nothing to do with diet, lifestyle and environment.
D. Teenagers who are ignored at home get sick more easily than those who are not.
57.The underlined word “coma” in Paragraph2 probably means ________.
A. embarrassment B. faint C. tiredness D. sadness

Good readers know that reading isn’t just about knowing words — it’s a way of
thinking. Smart readers think before, during and after reading. Here are some tips that
may be of some help.
Think before you read. Before you read the text, ask yourself the questions that why you are reading it and what you want to get from it. Answering the questions will help you choose what words you need to know and what words you can skip or scan.
Think while you are reading. Can you get the meaning of the text without looking up new words in a dictionary? Are there any clues in the text? A text will often give examples that may help you understand what some of the words mean. Let’s take the following sentence for example.
Many large Russian cities, such as Chelyabinsk and Irkutsk, have taken steps to protect their culture.
The words “Chelyabinsk” and “Irkutsk” may be new to us, but the sentence tells us that they are examples of _______.
Think after you read. Do you understand the text? What is the main idea of the text? Can you guess the meaning of the new words? Which words do you need to look up? Is the text too easy or too hard for you?
If you practice reading and thinking in this way, you will become a smarter reader and you will learn more, faster and better.

Americans usually make allowance for(宽容)non-native speakers who have some trouble understanding English. But they become annoyed when a person pretends to understand but doesn’t really and then creates problems because of misunderstanding what is said. No one wants soap when he asks for soup. So if you don’t understand what is said to you, admit it and politely ask the person to repeat or explain.
Second, it is quite rude to talk with a friend in your native language and leave your American friends standing there feeling stupid because they can’t understand the conversation. The Americans may also feel that you are talking about them or saying something you don’t want them to hear. If you must switch to your native language to explain something to a non-English-speaking friend, at least translate for your American friends so they don’t feel left out.
Learn just a few more polite English expressions, and you’ll be ready to face the world of Americans with confidence. The polite response(反应)to a compliment(赞扬)about your looks or your work is “Thank you.” (A smile and a nod is not enough.) The response to “Thank you.” is, of course, “You’re welcome.” If someone asks, “How are you?” don’t give your medical history. Just say, “Fine, thanks. How are you?” Finally, what should you say when someone sneezes(打喷嚏)? It may not seem logical, but the correct response is “God bless you.” That’s about all there is to it. Now that you’ve learned this general knowledge of manners in the U. S. A. , you’re ready to be polite in English, Let’s hope your American friends will be just as polite.
62.Which of the following does the writer not refer to?
A.Don’t let any of your friends feel left out in the course of conversation.
B.Ask for repetition once you fail to follow American natives.
C.Never serve your guest soap if he actually asks for soup.
D.Politely thank the person for his kindness when you’re praised by him.
63.In the first paragraph, the underlined word “annoyed” means .
A.rather angry B.very impolite
C.quite unfriendly D.fairly pleased
64.The passage is mainly about in the U. S. A.
A.the importance of good manners
B.the general knowledge of English
C.the skill in daily conversations
D.the good manners in communication
65.When you talk with someone in your native language, your American friend may feel .
A.he should learn the language
B.you try to keep some secret from him
C.you are angry with him
D.he becomes a fool

书面表达:
The students of our class had a discussion about whether it is necessary to start learning English from childhood. Some of them think that English learning should start from childhood. As little boys and girls have a very good memory, they can learn a lot of English words by heart. This will help them lay a solid foundation for their future English. But others do not agree. Young children have to learn Chinese pinyin at school. If they study Chinese pinyin and English at the same time, it will be very easy for them to mix them up. This will do a lot of harm not only to their Chinese learning but also to their future English learning. In short, the students have not arrived at any agreement yet. … …( your opinion)
