Kathy was a university student. Like most students she had very little money, but she wanted to buy a car. "If I can buy one really cheap that works," she thought, "I will save money on bus fares. Then I'll have more to spend on food.”

She spent a day looking at cars in the secondhand car yards. Most of them were much too expensive, but at last she found one for $ 250.

The car was rusty(生锈的)and the paint was badly damaged, but it worked

"It's got a good engine," the salesman said, "and the gear-box(齿轮箱;变速箱)is OK. Forget everything else.”

Kathy bought the car and drove it out of the car yard. Everything was wrong with it except for the engine and gearbox, which worked very well.

"As long as they work," Kathy thought, "nothing else matters. The salesman was right.”

Unfortunately, a few days later, while she was driving to her university, a police car drove up beside her and made her stop. A young policeman got out of his car and walked around Kathy's car. He looked at it disbelievingly. He made a list of the things wrong with the car. It was a very long list. Then he looked inside the car. "Does your speedometer(时速表)work?" he asked. Kathy shook her head. "It is against the law, Miss," he said, "not to know how fast you are traveling.”

Kathy smiled at him sweetly. "Oh, but I do know how fast I am traveling," she said. "Up to 30 miles an hour, the doors rattle(格格作响).Between 31 and 50 miles an hour, the whole car rattles. Over 50 miles an hour, I rattle.”

Dear David,

How are you? I am in Malaysia but it took a long time to get here!

Our flight from Sydney, Australia was at eight o'clock in the morning. We had to arrive at the airport two hours before our flight departed, so we had to be at the airport at about six o'clock. We left our flat at half past four in the morning, and we thought it would be easy to get to the airport on time.

We caught a bus at five o'clock. Unfortunately, the bus broke down while we were traveling along the highway. We waited for half an hour, but another bus didn't come. My father was getting anxious. He looked at his watch and said, "We'll be lucky to get to the airport before seven o'clock,

We decided to take a taxi to the airport. We were late and we thought a taxi would be faster. Wrong! We found a taxi, but the taxi got stuck in a traffic jam. We finally arrived at the airport at ten past eight. We looked at the departure board and saw that our flight had already left.

My father went to the airline office and explained why we were late. The people that worked there were very helpful. They said we could travel to Kuala Lumpur on the next flight, which left three hours later.

We waited for two hours, and then we heard an announcement that said our new flight to Kuala Lumpur had been cancelled!! My father went back to the airline office. He asked them what was going to happen to us.

About one hour later, the airline put us on a flight to Bangkok, Thailand. In Bangkok, we had to change planes in order to catch another flight to Kuala Lumpur. The flight from Bangkok to Kuala Lumpur was then delayed for three hours because of bad weather. When we finally arrived in Kuala Lumpur, it was 12o'clock midnight! We were supposed to arrive at 12 o'clock mid-day! What a terrible journey!

   I'll write more soon.

                             Your friend,

You are entering a world far different from the one my generation entered. My generation grew up with no MTV, no college loan deadbeats,no $ 175 sneakers(软底鞋),no underwear worn in public and very little jewelry worn on the tongue. Yet somehow we broke through and, achieved all these things, and more.

I believe that your generation is far more humane and caring than my own. You ask questions: "What is the meaning of life?" "How can I make a fortune with almost no money down?" "Why do we have to sit round in the hot sun listening to a commencement speech?"

I do not recall who it was who spoke at my own graduation Whoever it was, I know I looked to him for wisdom and guidance, just as you now look to me. I suppose if there is one single message I'd like to leave with you, it is this: concentrate(集中精力)on what you are doing.

If you do it well, you will be successful, unless you are trying to eliminate(消除)the federal deficit(赤字)or establish an indoor smoking zone

Act daringly. Do not fear making mistakes; though if you make one, look out.

Make a contribution Even though 70 percent of you will be lawyers, still 1 say to you: Try to do something useful with your life, if only in your spare time.

In a very real sense, your graduation here today is not an ending but a commencement, a beginning. If I may say so, this is, in fact, the first day of the rest of your lives. I realize it is a bit shocking to look at graduation this way, but I believe we must. Thank you, and lots of luck. You'll need it.

On August 27, 2003, Mars was recorded as being just 34,646,418 miles away from us. The planet moved closer to earth than at any time in the last 5,000 years. If that doesn't sound close, just remember that it was five times. as distant only six months ago.

"You can't miss Mars, it's bright and red," said Myles Standish, an American astronomer.

Mars is so close because of something called "opposition". This means the sun, the earth and Mars are positioned in a straight line and, as a result, they're closer (remember, the shortest distance between two points is a straight line).

For the next few weeks the planet should shine brighter than any other star, apart from the moon and Venus(金星).

It won't be difficult to see Mars. You can use a telescope if you have one, but you won't need it. Mars will be so bright that even the tights of the city shouldn't get in the way. All you need to do is to go outside and look up at the sky. Mars can be found a little to the south and a little to the east.

But the planet will not seem very big, it will shine like a coin seen from 500 feet away. Even though Mars is twice the size of the moon, it is 145 times as distant. And it might not be red either. If there are dust storms on Mars, it will look mostly gold. If you do see red, then you're seeing the surface of the planet.

Make sure you go outside and have a look: the next time Mars will be this close will be August 28, 2287.

  Cool Facts about Mars:

The last time it rained on Mars was about 3 billion years ago. You'd have more time on Mars: The Martian day is 24 hours 37 minutes. What would you do with an extra half hour?

Gravity is less on Mars than on the earth. So someone who weighs 100 pounds here would weigh only 38 pounds on Mars.

1. On February 27, 2003, Mars was about_miles away

  from the earth.

  A.6,929,283 B.173,232,090

  C.34,646,418        D.17,323,209

2. Why was Mars so close to us on August 27,2003?

  A. Because something is called "opposition".

  B. Because it has been moving to us in the last 5,000 years.

  C. Because the sun, the earth and Mars are positioned in a straight line.

  D. Because of some unknown reasons.

3. Which of the following is TRUE about Mars?

  A. Mars will be the third brightest star in the night sky for the next few weeks.

  B. For the next few weeks, Mars will be the brightest star in the night sky.

  C. Mars will look red if there're dust storms on it.

  D. Mars is 145 times larger than the moon.

4. If you stayed on Mars for a week, you actually stayed there for_.And if you weighed

46 pounds on Mars, you weight about_pounds on the earth.

  A. less than 7 days; 110

  B. six days and four more hours; 175

  C. more than 7 days; 175

  D. seven days and four more hours; 121

               The Citadel

"The Citadel" is one of A. J. Cronin's most famous novels, and has never been out of print since it was first published in1937.

The book is set in Southern England and tells the story of a doctor, Andrew Manson. At first, the young man has a bad opinion of doctors who are not qualified(有资格的)and do not care about treating patients properly. He criticizes the fact that they are only after money. At some point though, his interest in medicine is diverted(转移)into a desire to become rich. So Andrew struggles between his ideals(理想)and interest in money. Which one will win in the end? You'll have to read the book to find out!

"The Citadel" has excellent character descriptions. Through Andrew's character and career, Cronin exposes some very unpleasant facts about the medical profession.

The characters and events make "The Citadel" a powerful novel. Anyone who believes in a fair and just society would love it.

                 Eraser

If you like action, "Eraser" is the film to see.  Arnold Schwarzenegger stars in this film and Charles Russell directs. Schwarzenegger plays the leading role as John Kruger, a police officer whose code name is Eraser. He protects government witnesses(证人)who are in danger, by erasing their old identity(身份)and giving them a new one. His task is to protect a beautiful woman, played by Vanessa Williams, who can uncover(揭露)a scandal(丑闻)in which people in the government take part. Her enemies want to keep her from making the truth known. But Eraser does everything to keep her alive. He alone must guard her from some of the most terrifying forces in the world before time runs out. But will he succeed?

This multi-million dollar production has some breathtaking scenes. The special effects and performances are very good. The film's only disadvantage is that it has a weak plot(情节)and the ending is not surprising, unlike other Schwarzenegger films.

All in all, this action-packed film will not be interesting to everyone. But action-lovers and those who enjoy special effects will enjoy it.

Magic is believed to have begun with the Egyptians, in 1700 B. C. A magician named Dedi of Dedsnefu was reported to have performed for the pharaoh, or the king. He was also known to have entertained the slaves who built the pyramids. The "Cups and Balls" trick, which he was particularly good at, is still per-formed by magicians all over the world today.

The ancient Greeks and Romans were also attracted by the idea of magic. As a matter of fact, one of their main interests was the art of deception(欺骗).This explains why at that time the priests(牧师)even built magic equipment into their temples. These magic things made it possible for doors to open by themselves and wine to flow magically out of stone figures' mouths. This was done mainly to make people believe that the priests were powerful.

Magic, however, was not well accepted before the 1800s.Magicians were thought of as people with strange thoughts and were only allowed to perform in a circus(马戏团).It was in the19th century that the magician Robert Houdin came along and changed people's views about and attitudes towards magic. It was also because of Robert Houdin that many magicians were able to add Dr. or Mr. to their names. Today magicians try hard to find new ways to show their practiced skills. Magic is now entertainment for families, especially for children all over the world.
