In 1989, an 8.2 earthquake in America killed over 30,000 people in less than four minutes. After the earthquake, a father rushed to his son's school. He remembered the promise he had made to his son, "No matter what happens, I' 11 always be there for you!" And tears began to fill his eyes.

He started digging through the ruins of his son's classroom. As he was digging, the other parents tried to pull him off the ruins, "It's too late! They're all dead! Go home! There's nothing you can do!" To each parent he responded with one line, "Are you going to help me now?" And then he continued to dig for his son stone by stone. The police came and said, "You're endangering others. Go home. We'll handle it!" He replied, "Are you going to help me now?"

He needed to know whether his son was alive or dead. He dug for 8 hours ... 12 hours ... 24 hours ... 36 hours ... Then, in the 38th hour, he pulled back a large stone and heard his son's voice. He shouted his son's name, "Armand!" He heard back, "Dad! It's me, dad! I told the other kids not to worry. I told them that if you were alive, you'd save me and when you saved me, they' d be saved. You promised, 'No matter what happens, I'll always be there for you!' You did it, dad!" "What's going on?" asked the father. "We're scared, hungry, thirsty and thankful you're here." "Come out, boy! No, dad! Let the other kids come out first, because I know you'll get me! No matter what happens, I know you'll always be there for me!"

When we meet with difficulties in life, we notice that some of us choose to bury heads in the sand. Unfortunately, however, this attitude will do you no good, because if you have no courage to face them, how can you conquer(克服)them? Thus, be optimistic, as it can give you confidence and help you see yourself through the hard times, just as Winston Churchill once said, “An optimist sees an opportunity in every calamity(灾难); a pessimist sees a calamity in every opportunity.”

Keeping optimistic, you will be able to realize, in spite of some hardship, there's always hope waiting for you, which will lead you to the ultimate success. Historically as well as currently, there are too many optimists of this kind. You see, Thomas Edison is optimistic; if not, the light of hope in his heart could not give light to the whole world. Alfred Nobel would not have come into being. And Lance Armstrong is also optimistic; if not, the devil of cancer would have devoured (吞食) his life and the world would not see a 5-time winner of the Tour de France.

A rose may be beautiful, or may be not. That depends on your attitude only. So does success, and so does life. Difficulties do exist, but if you are optimistic, then they are only episodes(插曲)on your long way to success; there are more bridges than obstacles. The great British poet Shelley's lines say, "If winter comes, can spring be far behind?.

46. According to the passage, when meeting with difficulties in life?

A. we should choose to bury heads in the sand

   B. nobody has courage to face them

   C. we should avoid them

   D. we should be optimistic and confident

 47. What does the underlined saying of Winston Churchill in Paragraph 1 mean?

   A. There are always opportunities in store for an optimist

   B. There are always calamities in store for a pessimist.

   C. There are more opportunities in store for an optimist than for a pessimist.

   D. Opportunities depend on one's attitude towards life.

48. In order to show the importance of keeping optimistic, the writer took the following famous persons as examples except ______.

   A. Winston Churchill B. Thomas Edison

   C. Alfred Nobel     D. Lance Armstrong

49. The underlined word "obstacles" in the last paragraph is closest in meaning to

  A. roads B. blocks

  C. disasters D. opportunities

50. From the last paragraph, we can learn that __________.

  A. life is full of difficulties and people are the slaves of life

  B. some people don't meet with difficulties at all

  C. different attitudes towards life will lead people to different results

  D. people shouldn't care about difficulties

A woman thought she was in heaven when beer instead of water flowed from the kitchen tap (水龙头) in her flat in west Norway.

"We had a happy Saturday evening and ate a nice dinner. I was just going to clean up," said Haldis Gundersen, 50, from her home in Kristiandsund, west Norway."" I turned on the kitchen tap and beer came out. We thought we were in heaven."

The price of beer in Norway may be the most expensive in the world with 0.4 litre costing about 50 crowns (4.3 pounds) in a bar. Gundersen said she tried the beer but it tasted a little strange and was not fizzy. It was said that a worker in a bar two floors below had mixed up the pipes on Saturday evening, wrongly connecting a new barrel to a water pipe leading to Gundersen's flat. Per Egil Myrvang, the local beer distributor (经销商), said he had helped workers reconnect the pipes by telephone. “The water and the beer pipes do touch each other, but you have to be really creative to connect them together," he told local newspapers.

Gundersen joked about having the bar send up free beer for her next party." But maybe it would be easier if they just invited me down for a beer," she said.

 51. Which of the following is the best title of the passage?

   A. An interesting event.

   B. Two misconnected pipes.

   A. she was cooking

   B. a happy Saturday party was going on

   A. beer in Norway is very popular and cheap

   B. beer will be sent up free for Haldis again

   C. the local beer distributor was very annoyed

   D. the water and beer pipes are put close to each other.

54. What’s the real meaning of the underlined part in Paragraph 3?

   A. you are very clever to connect the two pipes,

   B. It is so careless of you to misconnect the two pipes.

C You create a new method of connecting pipes.

   D. The two pipes are close together, so it is easy to mix them up.
